I just picked up an 01 gs500 and I have a couple of questions. What changes were made to the jetting in 01? What is the better jetting for a stock bike? What if I was to add a k&n pod filter?

What do you guys feel the best "bang for the buck" would be on this bike? (jetting, exhaust, gearing...?)

Thanks for the help

welcome to the board

my bike is a '92 so i don't know much about the carbs on your bike...but check out this page

http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/mikesgs500/rejetting/Rejetting_Matrix.html

at the bottom and see what jets go with exhaust and filter...

basicly, just put in biger main and pilot jets, K&N filter and a slip-on exhaust can
then get a smaller front sprocket for better acceleration

How did you get the gsxr exhaust to fit? How does it sound/perform? You have any pics of the pipe installed?

GRU

i made a flange from a piece of metal...then had a pice of exhaust pipe bent the way i wanted it and put it over the GS stock pipe right before i the stock canister was welded..then welded the pipe i made to the piece of metal (flange i made)

i don't have any pics of the flange i made...it's simple...4 holes for the exhaust bolts and one big one for the exhaust flow

it sounds a whole lot better...i did this because it was cheap and i needed to get all that exhaust out because of the bigger jets and K&N pod filter, and because i love the way this exhaust can looks on a smaller bike

i'll get a sound clip tomarow so you can hear what is sounds like

Hi-T

Welcome to the board-

I ride an 01 and have completely upgraded everything- so feel free to send a shout out if you're looking to try something.

Jetting depends on what you plan to change-

Start with a 20 bleed type pilot (they are a pain to find - I had to bring them to a YAMAHA dealership to find the right one).
$14 from dealer

Exhaust system & Pod Filter
65 Mid Main (Small Round Slotted mikuni)
147 - 150 Main Jet (small round slotted mikuni)
Some say raise the needle but I say nay.
$20 from dealer

Exhaust system & Replacement Filter
62.5 Mid Main (Small Round Slotted mikuni)
142 Main Jet (small round slotted mikuni)
$20 from dealer

Stock Exhaust system & Replacement Filter
62.5 Mid Main (Small Round Slotted mikuni)
137 Main Jet (small round slotted mikuni)
$20 from dealer

Or You could drop $85 in to a factorypro kit or dynojetkit for the same thing.

I'd also do a search on timing advancers.  By the way- I have a K&n replacement filter plus the pilots and jets you'll need to rejet - all for $50 shipped- check the For Sale Forum.
