I don't have my manual with me and my tool kit just goes up to 19mm.  I'm guessing that it's a 21mm but I don't want to run to the hardware store and pick up the wrong size.

Does the underseat toolkit come with a socket for that?  If noone else can give you a definitive answer right away, I can run out to the parking lot with my trusty ruler and find out.

You know I don't have the tool kit either on me, I need to pull the plug to drill it for safety wiring for the track this weekend.  Kerry if you could check, that would be great - its smaller than a 22mm and bigger than a 19, so its either 21 or 20mm.

In that case, I'm pretty sure it's a 21.  But I'll check ... in a bit.

Yep, 21mm. See the oil change instructions either here on gstwins, or on my web page: http://www.angelfire.com/mt2/mikesgs500

What do you know?  The drain plug on my '99 is 17mm.

I tried the 22mm and 19mm wrenches in my kit and they were both too big.  I measured with the ruler and came out right at 17mm.  I made sure that it wasn't 16 or 18.

What year is your bike?  Maybe we've discovered another difference in the '01+ models.  Or maybe, since I bought mine used, it had been swapped before I got it.

Mine is a '91.  21mm fits, I just picked it up.

i thought mine was an 18mm. but i'm not sure anymore. i'll have to check it out again.
If you think you can, don't. Many things start with "I think I can," and end with "Ow!"

Good idea.  I'll have to apply an actual socket to that plug before I'm satisfied....

My 97 is 21mm and my 02 is 17mm so the change was between 97 and 02.  I've always used an old Snap-on deep wall 13/16" spark plug socket on the 97.  It fits the 21mm hex nice and snugly.

21mm/25.4=.826" and 13/16=.812"

The spark plugs are 18mm socket.

Not sure of the size, but the lugnut socket for my wife's Mazda MX6 wheels fits...

Jack's '97 has a 21mm bolt and my '99 has a 17mm bolt.

Anybody out there have the "missing link" - a '98 model?
