Grrr. Gas in the oil.

I forgot my petcock on PRIme after I reassembled the bike.  I got quite a bit of gas in the oil (I have a float that doesn't seal shut).  Not to let this act of stupidity rest unchallenged, I started the bike and let it run until it started to chug, then died... then a mix of oil and gas started dripping from one of the hoses (airbox, I think).  Which reminded me that the oil level looked kinda high before I started the bike.

Anyways, I let it cool down, then drained the oil.  It ran out like water  :o .  My guess is that it was at-least 1/4 or 1/3 gasoline :( .  I think the engine still turns (not siezed), but wonder how much damage I did running it for a few minutes.

Anyways, it looks like I'll have to change oil twice to get all the gas out.  I guess this was one of those hints that it's time to rebuild.

The exact same thing happened when my dad first got his CB450.  He just shut it down like you did, then changed the oil.  Ran it a little bit,  Then changed the oil again.  My dad didnt do any damage, you probably didnt either as long as you didnt run it too long.

I've drained most of the old gas/oil mixture.  How many quarts do I need to add, if I want to flush the old stuff out?  From the oil change page, it sounds like I'd need to add about 2.8 or 3 quarts for a full fill, including the filter change.  I'm not changing the filter this time (just changed it before storing the bike), and I don't need it to be full-up, so I'm thinking that adding back 2 quarts should be enough to run it for a few minutes?

Then I'll drain it again, and refill it full again.

OK you also need to change the filter... why... cos you have it filled up with gas. Could come unglued too... maybe not but its not useable anymore. The gas in oil isn't too bad... they sell you stuff that you add in oil to clean out the crap etc... its ~99% kerosene... which in turn is like gas... Just dont run too long and dont ride it like that. Anyway you could take out the filter and remove as much as you can off it, then add the recomemnded oil you can use crapola oil like walmart brand (3 quarts with filter is what I put in) and geive it a good long run/ gentle ride... till it fully come to temp and stays there for 10-15 mins... then drain it while its still hot... dont have to do it immediately... 10 mins will give it enough time to get the oil back in the crank case... and that should be about when you drain it... and take out filter s well... and new - your favorite oil and filter. The flush is done. I have done it on vehicles that were just plain filthy in oil and had good results.
Cool.

Just be careful when you drain it that you don't get any of that hot oil on your hand... OUCH it would be. ;-)

I put about 3.2 quarts in mine when I last changed it to get it to the correct line.  But wait! you may say, that's too much!  it wasn't... I think the oil bottles weren't completely full when I bought them  :guns:

Make sure when you get the oil you're going to be leaving in you get an extra quart, just in case you have the same problem.  you definitely won't need all of it, but you might need some.

Great news! I just saved a bundle on car insurance by switching to a motorcycle!

So I replace the filter and oil, run to flush the system, then drain and replace the oil and filter again.  So that's costing me $3 in oil, but $12 in filters :x .

What about if I just add the WalMart oil (with the crappy filter), and run the bike up to temp, then replace oil and filter?  Wouldn't the oil still flush-out the engine/tranny?  And I don't care if it fails to get every bit of gas from the filter, because I'll throw it away anyways.

But you think the filter might self-destruct if I try to run with it for a few minutes?  In that case, could I just take the filter out, and put the cover on with no filter at all; add oil and run with fresh oil and no filter for 3 minutes?  Then drain and replace oil and filter with the good stuff.

It seems like a waste to go through 2 filters.

I ws saying you take out the old and gas soaked filter and empty it by inverting it and shaking it, and cleaning out inside the oil filter area and put it back in, and use walmart oil for the flush... flush work best if you get the stuff that is external out then let fluid flow take care of the internal. Then good oil and filter. So more like 3 quarts of crapola oil, 3 quarts of good oil and 1 filter.

Thanks, sounds good. I've got the $5 WalMart oil already.

Wouldn't you know it ... I am wrestling with this ... I'd conservatively put my ratio @ 1:3 oil to gas.
So anyone know ... yea I started it and it gushed out form the right and left and top and bottom ... really it came out of every where to even try to find the leak.
I also ran it for 5-6 seconds wiht the oil light staying lit ... I was too busy staring @ it to see oil/gas from all over ...
So anyone know ... yea I read the old posts.

WOW!  So you had almost 3 gallons of liquid in the crank/gear case.  That can't be good for those rubber seals like the one on the shifter rod.  WOnder what the pressure was?

Do you really have to bother with flush and dump? I think if you drain the whole thing and then put in new oil the residual gas will burn off. Believe it or not but when your bike is cold some of the gas condenses on the cylinder walls and makes it into the oil. It's actually ok to have a few % gas in your oil (it just indicates that the machine wasn't heat cycled correctly), the gas will be removed when you give it a nice long ride.

Not 100% sure this is right but I remember seeing 1-2% gas in my oils when I got it analyzed and the guys at the lab said it was fine.

The Buddha

Not making much pressure in the 5-6 seconds I ran it. It still had the red light on. Didn't need to run it much longer, it was like I struck oil in my driveway ... beat it iran, we have a new madman with oil, The Buddha, oddly he wants to be paid in GS 500's ...

How bored or drunk (both?) are you, Buddha?

Well bugger is still oozing oil from every pore ... rather every surface ... I suspect its an early winter thrash at this point so I ride it on the days it breaks 30 and in the mean time used to make bars and guards.

So, not that I am not capable of filling the crankcase with stuff other than oil ... but I got it with near 3 gal of gas in the crankcase ...

Anyway it also had 1000 ft of wires and clips and switches and doodads crammed in ... all of it came out without drama.
It had a silicone patched diaphragm ... swapped for a good one from the rapidly dwindling carb parts pile ... but slides and needles are the ones I am dying to find ... diaphragms are around.
Bad O rings, yawn, have a few 1000 socked away ...

All in all pretty routine ... boringly so. Just the damn oil leaks need to be pinpointed ...  ... yea its ... well everywhere.

My hope is ... when it stops running like a river ... I find that the left and right cases, the pan and the shift shaft seal are all that has to be fixed.
I cant imagine any other surface being sealed with paper, and I dont see the head or base gaskets affected by gasoline. Paper can get eaten ... not metal. I hope.
Cool.

OK both the paper case gaskets are leaking and its not just when running, its leaking a good bit when parked.
However the shift shaft and countershafts are not leaking. Yea now that much of the gas/oil has dried up and whatever swelled up has gone back to size ...

I am also in the fortunate situation of having these gaskets lying about left over from a full on pack I didn't use. Anywho, I could cut the left one out of gasket paper, right one I have ... 2.
If tommorow dont go as miserably as today I may crawl under it and get it done post lunch ...
