Will it damage anything if I install the K&N pod filter on my 1991 GS without rejetting the carbs? I have stock exhaust, and this is the filter that replaces the stock airbox and fits over the carbs.

Thanks,
Scott

It'll make the bike run lean. Lean = hot, especially on an air cooled motor. If the bike overheats, it'll probably hurt something expensive.

Kind of what I was thinking, just lookin for confirmation. So I guess I'll just wait til I get a re-jet kit...

Thanks,

Quicker to buy jets indivudually...Dgyver had some he was selling to people last week. Pipe and lunch box pod K&N... 150/40/1 #2 washer and 3 turns on mix screw is what you need.
Cool.

Would that be the same for just the k&n with stock pipe?

OK not really... people have tried 145's... and maybe like it... no one I know has managed to get one tuned right... atleast not posted back after they did. Please put a pipe on it... its GodS way... Slip on will do and I have bought cans off ebay and put them on for cheap.
Cool.

I want to put a pipe on, just thats exactly it, I don't want to spend much but yet I want a good sound.

So therefore I'll wait to rejet until I have a slip-on and rejet stuff.

OK the cobra slip on for the GS is rather cheap for quality... and at ~150 is the cheapest out there but its shitty quality. What I recomend is getting a slip on off ebay off another bike... like a Katana or older GSXR... non flange can and make an adapter and fit it. Mine cost me ~ 120 total including the can and fitting and shipping etc. I got a Yosh can in near new shape though.
Cool.

Hey Srinath, ever do an A/F measurement on your jet formula? I installed the K&N Stage 3 kit on my '93 with a full V&H system and K&N pod. I put it on the dyno this morning and it was running WAY too rich with the 134 main that came in the kit. We jetted it down to a 124 main and got a nice, clean A/F curve right around where it should be. Clip is on the top of the needle. It's still running a tiny bit rich on the low end of the rev range, but there was no more adjustment in the needle and it was only affected low down in the revs where I don't spend a lot of time.

Anyhow, just curious since there's a big difference between 124 and 150.

Oh, and screws are 2 turns out.

I have done runs with an O2 sensor in the pipe... what did you use. O2 sensor on the dyno... You might get some more air in on the road...  Anyway the top could be rich but the mid range might be still lean with DJ cos the needle has that extreme taper down at the bottom. I am running 150 wiht stock needle.. the DJ needle is super super thin even in the top part... and the bototm 1/2 inch is ridiculous... 150 only with stock needle. remember needle obstructs flow that the mains lets in... so thinner needles = bigger mains.
Cool.

Gotcha. The sensor was in the pipe - not sure if it was an O2 sensor though...I'd assume so, but how he explained it to me was that the sensor measures unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust.

The Buddha

Those 124's have my worried about mid range... Top is fine but 1/4 to 3/4 throttle is where I think it could be lean with DJ's needles.
Cool.

It's a little lean in the low range, but is real good through the rest.
