So since I tried and looked for an oil thread and found shaZam! loads and really didn't get any info, I was wondering what you guys are running?

I run the Mobile One 15-50 in my Tiller and that seems to be great!  So what should I be running in the GS?

Thanks! :thumb:

No reason you cant use the same in the GS. I use Amsoil 10-40.

[Edit: on second thought, make sure if you're using automotive oil that it does not have friction modifiers/additives which will affect clutch. if you have not had trouble on your tiller should be okay for GS]

I got Honda GN4 or whatever.  It's fine.  It's not that much more expensive than any other oil.  I think I paid about $12 or $13 per gallon.

right now i'm running castrol syntec in my bike and it seems to be working just fine.

I decided to do that after culling through loads of pages last year.

ditto Castrol Syntech, er, Actevo; 10w-40.

Accel oil 10W40 weight... walmart has them for 74 cents a quart... its for cars before 1990 as it will damage the sensors in newer cars... Old car oil... rated SF... its grey right out of the bottle... and I love it. Loaded with zinc I think... But I dont have sensors to worry about.
Cool.

I put the 15W-50 Mobil 1 red cap oil in my 97 GS after 5k miles and was real happy with it.  No valve shims changed till 40k miles and no oil added between 3k changes till past 50k miles.  After oil consumption increased to 2-3 pints between changes, I switched to the 15W-40 Delvac 1300 diesel oil at about 70k miles.

The GS500 runs cooler on the 15W-40 Delvac than it did on the 15W-50 Mobil 1 and I was able to drop from premium to mid-grade gasoline w/o pinging when hot.  Put same Delvac in my 02 GS first change and am sold on it for the air cooled GS500 engine.

The Delvac, Rotella, etc 15W-40 diesel oils have high grade base oils and since not for autos, they don't have any of the friction modifiers put in the Energy Efficient lower viscosity auto oils.  Also they still have more of the zinc & phos additives for film strength that were reduced in auto oils to accomodate the cat converters.  Excellent oils and available at any Walmart for $6-7 a gallon.

Good read on these oils that are fast becoming popular with many motorcyclists:
