well if it was me, i would take it to the shop....if you know anyone that can do that (a friend or so)....or, if the bike runs good then i wouldn't do anything...

there is no way you can know for sure

unless you 1 watch, or 2, put a small piece of tape of some king across a part that would have to come off. that way, you would know if its been removed :dunno:

[/i]Know thy mechanic.

Trust only the one who takes pride in his work.  Trust only the one whose reputation is at stake.  The only one I trust has been employed long-term at his own independent shop.

But, I do all of my own work, if possible.  You know,

Just loosen one or two of the valve cover bolts.  If those bolts are still loose after the "work" has been done, find a new shop.  If the bolts are tight, then the shop at least took the time to tighten them and chances are that they actually took off the valve cover and checked the clearances.

Whether they actually adjust the valves will be up to you to determine when you take the bike for a ride.  A bike should always come out of the shop running better than it did before you took it in.  Otherwise you shouldn't be paying anything.
