Quote from: 70 Cam GuyI'm a student at San Jose State majoring in Industrial Technology: Manufacturing Systems.  minor is business management

I currently work at a CNC/manual machine shop.  Its all contract work.

I'm having an internal dilemma or sorts because I enjoy my classes but I'm almost enjoying the shop more.  I still want my degree because enventually I think I'll want a desk job or something with less potential hearing damage (some of us wear ear plugs on the job).

What is a sparky?  Is that a name for welders?  Welding is something else I'd really like learn more of.  The local JC has some welding classes I've considered taking more for fun than anything.

I was a CNC operator for 2 whole weeks!  I just got fired about a week ago.  I learned everything the guy who was training me taught me and even asked him about some other things but he kept telling me that I would learn those things when I went in on Saturday for a help session.  So basically he would setup the program for me and just make me zero set it and run it.  He told me this was all I would need to know.  The first day of my third week when I was on my own they expected me to know a lot more!  Unfortunately they fired me after 3 days on my own.  I am very dissapointed in the company for not really even giving me a chance to show my skills.  I admit the job was a bit demaning but I could easily have learned everything given a few months.  The math behind the work was simple there were just so many g codes to learn and lots of small details.  The say I got fired I started learning a whole lot because someone was actually willing to help me but then I got terminated!  I look back on it now and I think its actually kinda funny.  In the time I worked there I earned enough to get my bike so it was well worth it.  I am unemployed now but I signed up for school full time next semester, it will pay off a lot more in the longrun than a full time job.  I was only making 9 an hour as a CNC operator, which was the best I have earned but hopefully I can get a little part time job at the college and make like 6.25 an hour.  I am not so concerned about money right now I just want to be able to have a bit of extra cash in my pocket incase I want to buy things.

I really liked the company when I first started they had nice benefits and seemed to treat the employees very well.  I find it unprofessional that they fired me in such a short amount of time.  I was never late and I was willing and able to learn everything they wanted me to.  Its probably for the best though.  The guy training me actually had a missing finger from working there so maybe the same would have happened to me!

My day job is Advertising and Technology Manager for a car dealership. Odd title, I know. Long story short, I was hired to be the Internet Sales Manager and to handle the dealership's advertising (My degree and last 10 years of work experience was in advertising/publishing, but my salary was more or less capped so I got into sales to make more $$). Then the I.T. guy quit and despite the fact that I have no background in computers, since I'm the only person here that can turn a computer on without a manual, I ended up somehow being responsible for anything in the building with a plug. So now I train new employees on our CRM software, manage the network and website, and fix problems with computers or the phones when necessary - in addition to the advertising stuff. No time to sell cars with all of my other responsibilities though, so I'm out of that game for now. The whole thing kinda sucks, but the paycheck is decent.

I also publish a regional motorsports magazine (http://octaneonline.com). I started the magazine three years ago and figured by now I'd be doing it full time...but then I got married, the wife went back to school, and for the moment I'm needing to work both jobs to support the wife and her 10-year-old. Hopefully in the next few months she'll finish up and start working again and I can leave the day job to pursue my publishing empire!

Although from the time I graduate High school until the time I broke my neck about a year ago (yes...in 2 places) I was an EMT - Now that was a fun job even if the pay sucked. Luckily the broken neck thing didn't have any long lasting effects (I'm a good healer apparently) it did necessitate a change of fields for the moment...god I hate cubicles! :x
