Hi everyone.  This is the first time i've posted.  I've been reading this site for a few months now and was waiting the 500F to come out before joining.  Well, finally on the first day it rolled out on the floor on Good Friday, I went in and bought it.  Got a great deal!  But 2 days later after 54 miles, it stopped running today.  I don't know what's wrong.  I will try to get the dealer to come pick it up for me tomorrow and take it in.  The engine will just stall while riding.  After that, it wont' start up till it sits for 10 min.  It'll try to turn over, but it won't.  The last time I tried, it wouldn't stay on long enough to ride it so I had to roll it into my friends garage who happened to live 3 blocks away.  I don't know what the problem is.   :dunno:  Does anyone have an idea?  The service guy didn't know by talking to me on the phone.  He just said to bring it in.  I've been excited about this bike for the last 5 months and now I'm not sure if I should have gotten it.  It's my first bike and I'm majorly bummed.   :(   Would love to have some suggestions on what to do.

welcome

first, you say that the engine does not turn over but 10 mins later it does  :dunno: that's weird...when you say "It'll try to turn over, but it won't" do you mean the engine is cranking but it will not start or the engine doesn't turn over (starter not cranking the engine)?

Don't try to fix it yourself.  It's brand new; let the shop fix it under warranty.  New bikes are full of new parts that have not shown their true nature yet; so there is always a "shakeout" period.  It's probably something simple, like a cracked plug that misfires when hot enough, or something electrical that is not working when hot.  But that's their problem.

If you want a bike you need to fix yourself, we could trade! ;)

I hope you are following the breakin period. I have never owned a new bike, but I know there is a breakin period.  Anyways, try not to worry I am sure it some glitch or possibly a bad battery not holding a charge? I dunno, I'm not an expert.  If you want take a look at the battery post connectors to make sure they are firmly attached. At least you have a full factory warranty, they won't let you down. Plus that why you bought it new. Let us know.

Yeah, it cranks and cranks, but won't turn over.  After sitting, it'll turn over and I start riding it.  I try to keep it under 5000 rpm for the break-in.  I'm a new rider so I don't try to go fast.  Just conservative riding.  It was great Saturday and Sunday and on my way to work this morning, but on the way home, it just didn't want to keep going.  I was in 4th gear when it died the first time.   2nd time I was also in 4th and down shifting before a turn.  It died before the turn and I coasted to stop.  3rd time maybe 3rd or 4th and just stopped but was lucky I was coming to a red light.  4th time just moving along in 5th gear at 45 mph and died.  5th time, just as I got to my friends house died while slowing down and down shifting with clutch in the whole time.  After that, can't restart...just keeps cranking.  It turned over once and died immediately.  *sigh*  I'm more embarrassed than anything with everyone looking at my new bike and I'm stranded.  I'll keep you guys posted.  I'm gonna go to the dealer tomorrow and have them bring a truck to my friend's house.

sorry to reply off topic, but what kind of deal did you get on that thing. Im getting one this week and am wondering what it will run me.

baldwin

Invoice is about 4250.  I got it for $5160 out the door...tax, license, setup, shipping.  I decided to go ahead and pay 330 more for the 4 yr extended warranty since I got a good deal.  Of course I got a discount on gear too.  I think you can probalby get a better deal if you really try...but I think that was pretty good.

nl_carey

Really stupid, obvious question - it's not that you've run out of fuel is it?

paui

or....the battery died from sitting on the showroom floor?
Don't mind me I'm just new.

Might want to try moving the petcock to prime and try starting. I have to do this sometimes if I forget to turn the choke on while starting on cold mornings.

baldwin

The tank was filled up.  I can see fuel in it when I open the lid.  There's only 54 miles on it.  I tried setting it to prime and I got the same thing.  I put it on reserve thinking I was out of gas, but that didn't work either.  Can the tank be empty if I can see gas in it?  This is my first bike so I keep thinking maybe I did something wrong, but I really don't think I did.  It does seem like it's running out of gas, but how can that be if I can see gas in the tank?

andy23

check the fuel lines to make sure its not a problem with delivery.

Welcome!
The bike will hit reserve with what looks like a half tank of gas. Dont let that make you think otherwise. You should be getting 150-170 miles before you runout of gas and need to hit reserve though.

Take it to the dealer-too new to have to deal with it yourself.

How much gas is in the tank? When I first got my bike, I ran out of gas. I had it on reserve and I looked in the tank and it seemed like there was quite a bit of gas in it. But once I filled it up and started it on PRI, it worked fine. Did you fill the tank up yourself, or did the dealer say it was full. Because dealers often just put enough gas in the tank for you to get home.

Thanks guys.  yeah, i put it on reserve thinking that i was low, but it still wouldn't start.  Dumb question...but can I go so low on gas that I bypass the reserve?  I'm thinking now that maybe the dealer skimp on me and didn't fill it up.  But I'm still befuddled as to why it looked like there was a lot of gas.  How do you tell if your tank is full?  How far is too full?

okay, gas has a lot to do with it. ( a lot of shops wont put much into the tank.  :x , but my friends 91 hes trying to sell, wouldnt start, would crank, and backfire thru the exhaust  :o , but he swore up an down it had enough go juice in it. but i put a gallon into it, and new plugs and ran like a top. could be something simple, :? or ... :x  keep us posted.....

The dealer is supposed to deliver the bike with a full tank of gas.

The only thing I can think of that could cause this would be if the tank petcock (the one on the bottom of the tank) were only barely open or got clogged.  It let enough fuel in but couldn't keep up.

But I agree, its too new for you to have to worry about.  Let the dealer figure it out, but beware, they may try to say its your fault.  Be very suspicous if they do blame something you did or didn't do.

OK lemme be the voice of doom here...
Those Mofo's forgot to put oil in... Honestly Roseville suzuki yamaha were the most in competent mass of morons ever gathered in one place... they called clutch cable, Gulch Keebler and couldn't find gulch keebler in their fiche... then they ordered it, and when I went there they gave me the worng one... a katana one. I told them its not the same and will not fit and had the cycle shack or some like that guy make it for me. So look for oil. Also a cold motor will not start wihtout choke. You turning that on.
Cool.

Ok....I took your advise thinking it may be something dumb like gas.  So I filled it up and it ran well enough to get me home.  So here's the part that boggles me.  It only took 3.3 gallons to top her off.  The spec says the bike has a 5.3 g tank...5 g for me in Cali.  So why was I out of fuel with 1.7 gal left?  If it was a gas prob, why didn't the service guy and/or the sales guy I had on the phone tell me to fill it up cuz they didn't?  I'm hoping the bike will make it to Roseville Cycle center.  I am starting to agree that it might be still gas related, but I'm skeptical that is all it is since I still had 1.7 gal left.  Reserve didn't work either.  Will let you guys know the scoop when I find out.
