I have been told that the GS tanks are known to rust and my bike being 7 years old I wanted to cream the tank and planned on doin it myself ... Only one prob, I have no idea what the cream is and how to cream the tank  :?  :dunno:  Any inout will be helpful. BTW does anyone know where to route the overflow tube from the battery? Pics will be helpful. I put in a new battery and routed the tube the wrong way ... Don't ask what went wrong    :(  ...

Thanx.

I haven't used cream(kreem?), but Using POR-15, you degrease, remove rust, then coat.  All three components are included.  As are instructions.  Just follow them and take your time(up to a few days :o )

You shouldn't need to do this though, unless you see rust or have holes in your tank.

Few days  :?  DAMN Well my tank does not have any hole and will chk for rust but I just wanted to take preventative measures so that I am not stranded on the freeway due to crap in me carbs. Any other preventative measures I can take ... not only for the tank but for anything on the whole bike?

Thanks.

I used POR-15 on my Gs450.  I used carb. cleaner to initially clean the tank, brake cleaner to do the final clean, the included etcher, and the sealer.  It took me about a day to get it ready for the sealer, and after following the directions for the sealer(including the draining), I spent the next week working on the dents and such on the outside of the tank.  About 6 days after I put the sealer in, I put it back on the bike, filled it up with gas, and haven't had a prob. since.

If you get the Motorcycle kit(I bought the etcher and sealer), it comes with a flush so you can skip the first two things I did.  I used it to fix a crack in the weld on the back of the tank, and it is working great.  Don't waste your time with the parts store repair kits for gas tanks, I used them on the same tank, and they didn't do jack(*&@.  There are other products out there, but I don't know anyone who has used them.

Good Luck

I did mine two years back and the stuff worked fine.  It make a mess and the end result isn't pretty.  But no one going to see the inside of your take anyways.  When you put in the eteching solution make sure you keep moving it around so the whole tank stay wet.  I let my sit overnight and the bottom where the solution was, was fine, but the dry area was covered with surface rust.  So I had to etech it a few times.  I you have a lot of rust inside put some big metal nuts in it to knock the rust off(make sure you count it so you know how many you put in.  If you don't want to do the work yourself, you can take it to a radiator/gas tank repair place and they can recoat the tank for you.  Last time I check it cost around $100.

Radiator places take paint off the tank in their cooking process... The fact that a tank is 7 years old doesn't make a difference... I have 22 year old tanks that held up very very well even wihtout gas in it 90% of the time. I have had tanks on my 86 vulcan, 87 eli 1000, 89 GS, 90 GS, rot out. My 91 was bad... but better than the 89 or 90. My 89 katana went to shaZam! but the 93 did not. I belive and many people disagree wiht me... but from 85-86 to 90-91 is all that we need worry about. somehitng about world wide steel turning into shitty quality... but some people disagree... in any case if your tank has no rust in it right now, and look at the top and bottom... via the petcock hole and fuel cap hole... I'd say leave it... it prolly never will rust. Just my .02.
Cool.
