Well about 5 or 6 months ago my friend picked up his yellow 2003 Dodge SRT-4 (neon on steroids) for only $19,500. Completely bone stock the car makes 215 whp. 0-60 in 5.8 seconds, 1/4 mile in 14.2 and top speed of about 150. Rember, this car is turbocharged with a front-mount intercooler.

Well now 5 or six months later there has been about 3 or 4 grand that has been dumped into the car. Mopar offers a few performance options. The first thing is the Mopar stage 1 kit which includes fuel injectors and an ECU. This puts dyno proven 240 horsepower to the wheels, which equates to about 270 ponies at the flywheel.

Next he put the Mopar blow-off valve, very loud might I add (107 dB). He now has theses 3rd party aftermarket products...

-Injen Intake
-MSD ignition
-Magnacor wires
-Modern Performance full catback exhaust with 3" piping
-ATP downpipe
-ATP O-2 downpipe
-ATP wastegate
-Eibach Springs
-8 gauge grounding kit
-Carbon Fiber triple scoop hood
-REAL carbon fiber engine dress-up kit with CF plates
-Carbon fiber fog light covers
-Xenon style Headlight bulbs
-Xenon stlye blue turnsignals
-G-tech pro performance meter

SOON to come items...

19" Racing Hart Wheels
QUIAFE LSD
Dual stage boost controller
Turbo timer

With this setup right now, he's making well over 300hp to the ground  :thumb: and with the Limited slip differential he should be running high 12's to low 13's on the 1/4 mile. Right now, I know it's embarrasing but now he's running low 10's on the 1/8 mile because of 0 traction and a slick ass track. Car spins all the way through 1st and 2nd and about 1/5 the way through 3rd then bogs down. And thats without warming up the tires first.

The amount of horsepower you can run these cars is unbelievable and believe me, this car is quick quick quick!! Beat a lancer evo on a 30 mph roll. And the stock bottom end can hold 600 horsepower
But anyway feel free to say whatever.

Oh yea, use to work for Chrysler!! I love the srt, i love mopar, just liked school more. HEHE! Sweet ride.

ACE

Yeah, too bad i can't take credit for it but I was the one who talked him into getting it. At first he was going for one those MAZDASPEED "SLOW"tege's (protege') they only crank at around 180 and they are turbo.

waaaay too big....
17s should fit any of the big brakes he could get.

19's are just bling

but that's my only negative.  cool car, i kinda like srt4's, but i'm more of a subaru person, myself   :thumb:

sigh... in 2003 I bought a brand spanking new Dodge Neon ACR.

150hp
145 lbs torque.
stock factory koni adjustable suspension.

19,500

1 month later dodge announced the srt-4..... bastards.

oh well... still love my Neon ACR, like the GS500E is is a highly underatted car, It will walk away from all the ricer honda civics where I live, and give even porshes fits in the tight 25mph switchbacks.

GRU

about the dyno...some people have prooven that a stock SRT4 put's out about 240 w/hp...yeah, that's wheel hp

Dragonfly

About the Him buying the dodge over the mazda... Thats great if all you do is run in a straight line all the time(damn boring). The Protoge will run circles around the Srt-4 in a road coures or an auto-x.

300hp is alot of power to try and handel on a front driver!!!! good luck hooking up off the line, or out of a corner.

newbieone

Na dude, the srt, will give the mazadaspeed a run for the money.  Neither car is go tear up the asphalt to much in autocross being that they are both front wheel drive cars and do not drift very easily.

Buru, huh, SRT would kick the buru's ass on the streets. Now in dirt?? gotta love the heavy buru. 19's are a little much on a light low powered car, but stick them on what they are made for like a viper, then its not bling anymore. The ratio works out better for some cars, but in most cases 19 inchers will slow down any import.

Put hey, you gotta hand it to dodge for not letting the japs take all the credit and giving it to them american muscle style.

ACE

i was just informed that he is now getting a set of 17" VELOX PG-5S wheels. These are super-light wieght rims. ONLY 12.5 lbs each!!! the 19's are out of the picture.

GRU

no offence to mazda lovers but mazda speed is a rip off....it has a turbo on stock internals and runs about 4 psi of boost   ...that's why it only runs about 15.3 on the 1/4....i'm not taking any sides because i'm not a big neon or mazda fan but the neon has better handling, acceleration and top speed than mazda speed

True power freaks draw a line there ;).  They also would get a recirculated bov because they don't need the poseur value of an atmospheric.  External, Atmospheric wastegate would really show he means business :nana:

Sounds like a hot car for sure.  How's the transmission on those?  I remember that was the weak link on the turbo Eclipses along with axles.

He's going to have a tough time pulling good et's on a standing 1/4 with that kind of power plus front wheel drive.  Front wheel drive is an uphill battle by itself.  I bet his trap speeds will be off the chart compared to his et's.

Neons are probably fun to drive but give me RWD or WRX (drives like a RWD) and I'll be a happy man.  I have to admit though that a Mini Cooper S looks like a hoot to drive.  I started driving on RWD and love being able to control my oversteer  .  Nothing like fishtailing or drifting around a corner on power.  I love cars  :P

nice ride, imagine this those that know mopar will know this. take the guts outta that car and put into a PT. (shares the same powertrain as neon.) dunno about pt's tranny though :dunno:

TRANNY IS ROCK SOLID!! i forgot to mention he's got that MOPAR short-throw shifter. I drove it and it works like a dream!! the shifts are equivlent to a stock HONDA S2000. Very short. You can keep your hand in one place and shift with your fingers it's so short.

On another note, I too think the mazdaspeed is a serious rip off. The only thing it has going for it is it's audio system and the 17" racing harts that come stock. It's quick through 1st gear but after that it's nothing to brag about. My friend's got one and believe me, that 4 pounds of boost is so weak, he put a $250 blow off valve on it and you can't even hear it. And not to mention that vertical mount magazine sized intercooler!! they really messed that one up. I would say the only other good cars in this class would be the 2 big boys that are slightly more in price. The new lancer evo and the Subaru WRX sti. They'll flat out smoke the srt-4 off the line, but from say a 40mph roll with my friends mods, the srt-4 barely pulls away.

manofthefield

Yeah, Dodge/Mopar has been doing their homework.  I'm not sure what they are entering this year, but last year they had 4 neons in the SCCA ProRally.  2 SXT's and 2 SRT's I think.  Obviously the Evo and the WRX were the big guns with awd, but in the Dodges cleaned up in their respective Fwd catagories(group 5 and group 2).  I think there was one Mazda, but I don't recall how it did.

Sorry, the only pic of those neons i have is in the dark and not very clear.  If you want more info on US rallies, just do a google search for SCCA ProRally.  Each of the 8(?) rallies have their own page, this page has links to them and results.  I highly recommend checking one out :thumb:

Nice car, but a little too boy racer for my taste. FWD turbo'd cars pull hard on the top, but are hard to launch, so they don't fare too well in the 1/8 mile. 1/4 mile should be pretty impressive though. It's nice to see factory horsepower on the rise again. I'm still a sucker for an old rear driver though...and in a few months my stodgy old Fairmont will seat 5 and roll high 12's in the 1/4 for about $3,500 total investment...

franke3c

do you have a dyno of this 300 wheel horse power machine?

ACE

Well he's got the g-tech pro performance meter, and so far he's pulled 323 @ the wheels but you never know how much that things off could be more could be less, sounds about right to me. He just ordered some new tires (BF goodrich drag radials) for racing only, although they are a DOT approved tire. With those and the Limited slip differential he should be running in the 12's on the 1/4. A guy without the LSD said he was running right at 13 seconds with those tires and about the same mods. Said you have to tach it up to almost 6k before they spin.
