Hi folks, newbie with a question.

Recently got an 89 GS5, I was taking a look around a couple of days ago, and took off the gas tank. i unhooked both hoses and turned off the fuel line. After that, I didnt touch anything or take anything apart. I Put the hoses back on the correct lines, and turned the fuel line back on, and went for a short (maybe 5 mile) ride.

So yesterday, I turn it on, she comes on and idles at about 1500rpms, but cuts off as soon as I touch (turn) the throttle.

what gives?

Ditto.  My bike needs to be warmed up before I can give the throttle a good twist (with the choke OFF) without it stumbling.

Just let it idle a couple more minutes.  Or, ride away with the choke ON initially and then remember to check the idle (at stop lights, etc.) and turn it off a little at a time as the engine warms up.  The choke should be all the way off in a mile or two.

(Disclaimer: Some folks say this is not good for the bike, and they may be right.  It works for me!)

If you didn't get the tank-mounted petcock on completely, you may have restrcted the fuel flow.  Also, when you hooked-up the hoses, you may have pinched a hose, restricting fuel flow.

This happened to me: bike ran fine on REServe, but if the frame-mounted petcock was ON, it would idle just fine, but kill if I blipped the throttle.  I could even ride it really slowly, but if I gave it any gas, it killed.

Turns-out, I had pinched the ON hose when I put the tank back.

kerry's solution gets my vote.  my bike is exactly the same.  let it warm up a bit first with the choke on, then try giving it some throttle.  mine's an 02, and it dies if i try to take off on it too quickly without letting it warm up.
