will a 1990 gs500e front caliper fit on my 96?

Yes all of the calipers are interchangeable on the GS forks.

The only difference is that the pads are not between the two styles.

remember you have to buy 1990 pads now for the front. Also, in consideration of the next owners you might want to mark the caliper as being a 1990 so they wont have problems with it (or dealers wont have problems either)...
