What are the disadvantages of using a slip-on exhaust not designed specifically for your make and model of bike?
Dude, what does mine say?  Sweet!  What about mine?

Bike exhausts are tuned to a specific engine. The exhast valve timing, the shock waves they produce, 2 cyl, 4 cyl. A piston cycle of 2 up 2 down, or 1 up 1 down??

These all effect how the exhast works and how power is produced, not you could really screw up a two stroke by not using the correct pipe, but I think the most you might do to a GS is not gain any power where a correct performance pipe might actually make power, I can't see any reason where it would cause harm to your engine though.

Alot of people on here have installed slip-ons not meant for the GS, with fine results.  It will pretty much accept anything.  A carb rejet is a good idea even with the stock exhaust, but think some have installed slip-ons w/o a rejet.

Yea... the slip on's... anydamn thing works just fine. The headers are plenty large and the stock can had all the resistance. That works great for us, we toss the can and we're happy. The little cross over at the head people say is bad, and they also say the bike should have a 2 into 2... and some people have made them and fitted them... but for most street use, the slip on on stock headers is enough. Those ports in the head kill the flow really, so full systems dont get you anything. Start doing head work, ports, milling, flowing etc and the pipes come up short.
Cool.
