Help!! Shift/Gear Change

Hello, GS Friends. I have a problem.

Recently, I am very difficult to find Neutral. What happened was... When I stopped the red light and tried to shift to Neutral... I couldn't. I tried so many times at so many different  occasions. But after that I parked my bike and turn off the engine, I could find my Neutral. When I was actually riding on the street/freeway, it was NO problem to change shift. Only when the engine is running, but not moving, I can't find Neutral or I can't up-shifting...

Do you know why? My friend told me just because the owner of GS (me!!) didn't know how to ride! UGH!! Thanks you, my friend...

Rock the bike forwards or backwards a bit, pull the clutch back in, blip the throttle, and try again.  It can be a bit finicky.

It seems harder to find usually because you already in gear and moving.  Like the Malbroman said its little finiky but once the bike is in first at as stop very very gently pull up on it, if you miss it and go into second just press it down lowly.  You are probably just in a hurry and your mind is playing games with you because you are in traffic and thinking that way.  Nothing wrong with the bike though.  In my opinion is best the keep the bike in gear when at intersections because you never know when you will need to blast out of the way of motorist coming up behind you to quickly.  Maybe in paranoid, but I have been rear-ended once and I don't really care to relive that experience.

One other thing to check is your oil level.

Usually though if you are low on oil the problem you'll have is a hard time going from gear to gear, or shifting down into first when at a standstill.

Also in daylight sometimes the green neutral indicator is kinda hard to see.
I've stalled out a few times thinking I was in neutral and let out the clutch.

You may have too much slack in your clutch cable or clutch actuator.  That would keep the gears slightly loaded even with the clutch lever pulled in.

I was gonna say that too. If the bike wants to move with the clutch lever pulled in it's probably out of adjustment. Your bike shouldn't start to move until the lever is most of the way released. You do want a little slack in the cable but not alot. Check it and use the cable adjuster by the lever if it needs it.

change the oil, check the level to make sure its not low, try to shift into neutral before u stop...its much easier to change gear while moving.  if ur at a stop try to move the bike a little and get into neutral...sometimes i let out the clutch a slight bit and then try.....
u should be going into neutral at red lights anyway! stay in first and watch ur mirrors

YO Paul, I think you need to clear up the last part of your post.

It's got to be a little difficult for you to rock the GS back and forth, but you did have it lowered, right?  The GS doesn't like going into neutral at a complete stop, but just rolling it forward an inch or two will help you engage neutral.  It's definitely not due to being a poor rider!  :roll:  Most of us have that problem!

If you are going down through the gears without letting the clutch out in each gear you will have a problem.  You might get away by going down from 3rd into 2nd and neutral, but going from 4th etc down is too much to ask.

Hmmm...
Has anyone tried bending a clutch lever so it's easier to reach?  I think if you have the clutch adjusted properly, you don't need to pull the lever that far for the clutch to be fully disengaged.

You could get another clutch lever (they aren't too expensive), put it in a vise, and try bending it so it fits you better :)
