my old back tire was ravaged by burnouts. I just put it on about 2 months ago but it's gone now. Put a 140/70/17 Dunlop on the rear. Looks alot better but barely fits, we're talking millimeters. I wouldn't suggest a 150 rear tire, i dont think it would fit.

Rippa_MD

how about some pictures if you can of the Dunlop setup and where did you get the tire from?

I need to see a pic.  I am about to order some new tires myself and I want a wider rear tire as well.  I was considering the 140/80.  What is the difference in the 140/70 and the 80?

hehehemann

The 140/80 sits higher I think. I have those on my bike. I have the Azaro ST-46 140/80 and the ride is a fraction higher compared to the stock 130/70's

Hi-T

It is the tires profile or aspect ratio.  140 is the actual width of the tire and the 70 or 80 is a percentage of the width and equals the side wall heighth.

140 x .7 = 98  (mm)
140 x .8 =112.

These numbers are the height of the side wall- or from rim to end of tire.  They are both the same width but the 140/80 is taller.  Rim size and tread can effect the numbers, though.

Also,  tire height = wheel diameter + (2 X (section width / 25.4) X (aspect ratio / 100))    -    P235/75R15 would be: (((235 * .75) / 25.4) * 2) + 15 = 28.88 inches diameter.   I mean, if anyone cared...

ACE

don't go with the 80 series, it'll look to tall and will take away from the sport bike look. i wish they had a 60 series 140 rear tire.

mines a dunlop 505 or something like that

Hi-T

I gotta disagree- I say go with the 140/80.  It's easier to find than a 70 and isn't that much taller.  Add a kat shock and I think it looks pretty sweet- makes the back stand up a little... everyone's got their opinion...

newbieone

Well either way, the 140 does fit properly correct? Nothing rubbing or modifcation needed?

Are you sure that was the stock rim on a GS?

hehehemann

My 140/80's are fine on the stock rims, no mods or changes needed.

I want to know about the 150/60 fitting?  This is new to me.  I have researched this site pretty extensively and haven't heard this  tire to fit properly on the stock rim without getting pinched or something? So what gives. I am trying to order some tires now, and I can't seem to get a straight answer. Which is the best damn fitting tire arrangment?

mrslush50

the 150/60 will fit.  but it's not recomended for street use.  the smaller rim bends the tire in so that you can't get rid of the chicken strips.  this in itself isn't a problem but what happens after a while is that a ridge gets built up on the tire and the bike has a tendency to FALL in under hard cornering.  bad things ensue.  I'm told it works great for racing though, since you can get the good rubber in 150/60 and the tires aren't on the bike long enough to build up a ridge.

Hi!

There is a Pirelli 140/60-17 rear tyre. I think it's one from the Sport Demon series.

Where did you find a 140/60/17 pirelli? I have checked around and have yet to come across one.

I think I am going to go with the 140/70's or back with the stockers. I see what you are saying about the 150's and my riding limits are not at the limits to keep them strips down.

I can't make my mind up on how much I want to spend though. Money is really tight right now with me rebuilding this motor and all. So I am considering going with the Avon AM51/52's or the IRC RX01, or Kenda K671.  I really want a better tire, but I can probably get a better deal on the tires listed above. I don't really care how long they last because they will be much better than what I am riding on now.

Blueknyt

yeah, but you can get some really gooey tires in 150/60
i loved my michlens, yeah there was chicken strips, but still hooked up plenty to piss off the Big boys i was riding with.  i still grab my gut laughing when i remember the look on the guys face, when he blew by me just before the 270 degree exit ramp, and i beeped the horn while passing him on inside at a good clip towards the bottom.   he wobbled, recomposed intime to enter the next entrance ramp just ahead of me, and i walked by him again.  he dont talk to me no more, HAHAHHAHAHHAHA. what makes it even funnyer, my bike has a Comberland farms Milk Crate straped on the seat behind me to carry things. HAHAHAAHAHHAA, he got passed by a bicycle.

I have IRC Road Winner RX-01's in 140/70 on right now.  They work really well.  There not up there with the Pirrelis, but that's to be expected.  And they're certainly better than the stock tires.  They're biggest plus is the price.  Under 100 dollars for a set.

although I was in my local motorcycle megastore yesterday and noticed that their floor model gsF had stock Bridgstone BT45V's.  (I can't even remember what my bike had stock ('02) but I don't think it was the BT45.) So apparently you can now get the BT45 in the stock size. (130/70)

'02 did not have bt45 as stock tire. also, bt45 always had the stock tire size. its just that everyone just about gets the 140/80 instead.

right ok.  I forgot.  but now the 45 is stock equipment.  So they didn't give it a bigger tire, but atleast they gave it a better one.
