I just got a 2002 GS500 with 1300 miles a month ago. I really have no idea what service has been done to the bike. I was wondering if some of you could give me some recommendations as to what I should have done( or do myself) to the bike. It seems like it takes a while for it to warm up, and then it still likes to sputter a bit. I am really not mechanically inclined, what should this service cost me. I live close to seattle, so any recommendations on service locations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Erik

At 1300 miles you don't need much.  It's not even broken in.  Change the oil and ride.  I have the 2002 and it takes a while to warm up.  Live with it or re-jet.

Welcome to GStwin!

Your first service will not have to be done until your odometer reads 4000 miles. At that point you will need a valve adjustment and oil and oil filter change, as a minimum. There is a link to the service intervals on this site which will give even more details on what should be checked.

You should lube your chain every 600 miles (I do mine every 500, easier to remember when every 1000 clicks over, and that's when I check chain slack).
The motorcycle is no longer the hobby, the skill has become the hobby.
