Sounds like you've done your homework.  Kudos on the complete report of what you've tried.

The new relay should do the trick.  Let us know!

if you get stuck and don't feel like push starting the bike you can use a screw driver to short the contacts on top of the relay,  it is not pretty but it worked onm my friends sv650 when the clutch saftey switch was messed up.

I had a similar issue and it was the sidestand interlock relay swtich, but I had the same symtoms.

Eeek!  :o
Sounds like I should also check the sidestand relay, neutral switch and clutch switch.

In the meantime, I like the screwdriver idea -- maybe I'll make a mini jumper cable to minimize sparking etc.  Maybe mount it semi-permanently with a switch...

I had the same symptoms with my bike several months ago...I was lucky to buy a used relay off someone in this forum for 20$.  Push starting is a pain in the a$$.

Hehe, and the screwdriver thing is *not* pretty.  i think i got more stares with that one (why is that guy stealing a GS?) then with just bump starting the bike every time (why is that guy bump starting his bike?)...
