Long ride check list

has any one seen or put together a long ride checklist....as far as how to prep your bike.

Hmmm.  Start by making sure that your Routine Maintenance is up-to-date.

Depending on how old your bike is you may want to replace age-sensitive items like fuel hoses, cables, etc.  (I have brought extra clutch/throttle/choke cables along in my luggage before....)

How long is the trip?  Will the tires (and oil/filter) last that long?  How many miles do you have on your chain?  (And is it O-ring?  X-ring?  Well-maintained or not?)  Are the teeth on your spockets starting to "hook" at all?

Bring along a new set of spark plugs and make sure that your toolkit includes a spark plug wrench.

That's all of the obvious stuff I can think of as far as the bike itself is concerned.

Need any more advice about what to bring along?  I'll trade you some ideas & personal experiences for more details about the trip....  :mrgreen:

Can't add much to Kerry's wisdom but the two most useful things I carry are a small flashlight and a cellphone, I also carry a spare fuse in my toolkit and make sure you know where the fuse is located. Normaly on the righthand side of the frame under the seat, toward the front. Luck is very useful, carry that and you won't need the rest. Have a good trip.

How far is your "long ride" ?

Anything less than 500 miles is a normal ride day for me. Before every ride: lube the chain, check chain tension, check tire pressure & check for loose bolts. I normally carry: cell phone, cash, tool kit, water, snacks, rain jacket, maps, advil, and other things depending on the season. Chain lube is good to have for extended rides.
