a newbie to the family with rpm questions

howdy all, I just bought a 2004 gs500f beginning of may. love the bike just got a few questions. I am 6'3'' and 185lbs and when I run 65mph my rpms are at 5000. I'm used to playing with cars and those kind of rpms are too high. is that what they normally run and is it okay for the engine? owning a bike is a brand new adventure and I'm loving it I just don't want to be hurting the bike :dunno: any feedback would be great thanks

Welcome to the family!

Don't be afraid to open her up, the redline is still below what would cause any real danger to the motor (Obviously, don't hold it at 12K when Cruising). That's just the nature of the bike, it's prefectly fine to cruise at that speed.
That doesn't just apply to bikes, it applies to all high revving engines. I have an Acura integra GSR that revs to 8K and I cruise at around 4,500 on the highway.

I usually shift gears no lower than the 5,000 RPM mark.  (I think I'm fairly conservative in that respect, compared with what some others are comfortable with.)

Your bike can cruise comfortably -- for the engine, if not for YOU -- all day long at 7,000+ RPM.  Which is good when you're trying to get across the country on a deserted two-laner in, say, Kansas ('cause that translates to a miles-burning 80mph).

Don't forget that your speedo reads about 10% high.  When it says 65 you're going more like 58 1/2.  So that 80 I just mentioned is really only 72.
