I'm in a pickle.... beginning to rejet

I'm getting ready to rejet my 2004; I've put it off long enough...

the problem is I keep coming across different things while doing my searching, mainly because the 04's carbs. Some say they're the same as the 01+ models, some say they're different, one person said the only difference is that the 04 doesnt have those little brass clips.... whatever those are...  :dunno_white:

I'd rather NOT go with a DynoJet Kit, but the way things are looking I'm on the edge of caving and getting the "pain in the ass" kit.
I started out looking to buy the Factory Pro Jet Kit Stage 3.0, but I'm getting even more mixed signals there as well. Supposedly the 01-02 kit will work, but then I hear that this 3.0 kit doesnt even exist... who friggin knows....
I've also determined after an hour of wandering that there is no way to order a Jet Kit directly off the Factory Pro website, and none of their distributors listed carry the GS500 kits.  :dunno_white:

Then I find out that the Factory Pro Kits dont include needles... & I'm not really sure what the needles do but I might need them... :dunno_white:

So it seems I am doomed to do it myself... which is probably better because I am poor right now :icon_mrgreen:

A am rejetting a 2004 GS500f. It has the stock airbox removed with individual K&N pod filters installed. The exhaust is still STOCK, but will be swapped for a better full system at some point in time, and I will attempt the DIY Timing Advance after this as well.

I should also mention that I live in New England. Right now it is 90 degrees, but I've also ridden in 40 degree weather. I ride the hardest in the summer because the roads are in the best shape, so I am leaning more towards the higher temperatures. I am also at sea-level if that matters much.

I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need to order, because I really am clueless as to what I will be dealing with once I get those carbs off. From searching the site I have determined this so far:

2   x    Pilot jets #20 bleed type
2   x    Mid-Main jets #67.5 round slotted
2   x    Large Main jets #147.5 round slotted

I will need to pick up these allen-screws: M4X0.7X12mm for each float bolt.

I have heard about shimming the stock needle with #4 washers or replacing it with a DynoJet needle. Which is better?

I have also seen that I need to drill out the air mixture screws. Is there only one mixture screw per carb? and I'm assuming I am just drilling off some sort of cap to access said screw, rather than drilling through the entire screw itself and removing it.
I'm going by another thread which has this picture: http://officespace.dyndns.org:8080/gstwin/2001-carb1.jpg I'm sure it would be much more helpful if I had seen a carb before...

Is there a recommended place to order the jets from online that's quick & easy?

And finally, I should only order Mikuni jets?

thanks for any help!!!!

+1 to 3mm washers as shims (not #4)... see my current thread

There are neeedles in your carbs already, you don't need new ones... I hear the dynojet needles have some crazy shape to them and I don't know how well that works vs. stock needles.  If you want to do anything to the needles, I would recommend just shimming them with 3mm washers as mentioned above.

Yes, 1 air mixture screw per carb, you'll see them you take the carbs off, on the bottom

ps. I used this tutorial for rejetting, it was pretty helpful

thanks for the help so far guys  :thumb:
I'll be ordering the jets sometime this week.

to hell with the jet kits... seriously.
Right before I started this thread I sent Factory Pro an email asking about the 3.0 Kit for the 01+ GS500, and also asked how to go about ordering one. Today I got an answer. Their response was:

"do you really want to rejet your bike (5-6 times)?"

they want me to take my bike to one of their Dyno centers and pay some serious $$$$$$ to have my bike rejetted.
That's bullshit. thanks a lot Factory Pro; you just inspired me to do it myself.  :icon_mrgreen:

To Be Continued.....

I'm waiting for my jets in the mail & I came across the factory pro instructions: http://www.factorypro.com/tech/carbtune,CV,high_rpm_engines.html

I noticed it says to find the best main jet first (through guessing & checking), and then work your way down from there. so my question is: did you all take everything apart, swap only the main jet, put it all together, test,  take it apart, swap main again, put it together, test, take it apart, swap mid-main, put it together, test, blah, blah, blah.... and hours later be fine-tuning the air-mixture screws?

OR

did you take the recommendations from the site, throw it all in at once, and start from there keeping in mind that stumbling low= pilot, stumbling mid= mid main, & stumbling high = main..... or something like that?

The factory pro instrutions are the correct way of tuning the carbs

BUT I personally just looked what other people did and copied them and it worked just the fine first try
'05 GS500 : RU-2970 Lunchbox : V&H Exhaust : 20/65/145 : 15T : LED Dash : Sonic Springs : Braided Front Brake Line : E conversion with Buell Dual Headlight : SW-Motech Engine Gaurds ...

cool, that's what I figured.
I noticed it also says to tune the carbs after "10-15 minutes of hard riding". I've already got a nasty scar on my wrist from burning myself on  the exhaust.... I dont really need any more   :2guns:
