Ok im think i want a jet kit for my bike

Currently its all stock except for a fell exhaust system.

I planed on get a K&n drop in filter.....

I new to this bike thing so i would like to know what size to get and where to get them...  or should i just take my bike to a suzuki dealer and have them set me up .??

gomert43

right after my 600 mile check up i decided to make some changes to my
2001 gs500.  so far i have installed v&h full set exhaust. waiting for factory pro jet kit to come into the dealer.  first kit they got for me was for a 2000 and older model, didn't realize until carbs off bike and disassembled.  put  origional stuff back in.  not really that hard, plenty of information in this site to help.

Is it still possible to find full kit exhausts for the GS anywhere? All the places I looked online don't have them. Should I just go for a bolt-on?

Jet kit and K&N are going in tomorrow. Yeah baby!  :thumb:

I had Suzuki put one in.  I'm happy as a pig in shaZam!.  It was put in at about 15,500 miles and now I'm at 16,600 + miles.  It's flawless.  Quick warm up.  Pulls nicely from 3,500 on up.  Did not seem to loose any gas milage.  In fact yesterday I switched to reserve at 205 miles.  I ride this sucker hard and that includes commuting to Manhattan.  If you mess with the air box you are going to be screwing with this forever.  All the stuff posted is for older bikes.  From 2001 on up it's a brave new world.  If you are going to tackle it yourself get a complete kit.  Don't screw around with washers etc.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

where are you in wisconsin? if your close to me i would be willing to ride over and help you get some jetts and putting them in. if i'm too far away then i'm sure someone on here is probably close by. otherwise do a search on this site and you should get about 20 pages of jetting topics.
going fast isnt the problem, its the crashing and burning that hurts

The Jetting formula is for pre 01... yes that is true...
But Having said that, logically the same thing applies to the 01+... not my words, I've never seen the 01+'s carbs... I believe Manjul or someone else here said that.
So 1 size up on pilots, 1 size up on mid mains, and 1 size up on mains, 1 #2 washer under needle and 3 turns on mix screw, for a stock bike, or stock bike with exhaust and/or Uni in airbox.
K&N in air box and pipe = same as above except 2 up on mains.
Clamp on K&N's and pipe... OK I dunno but maybe 4 sizes up on mains and 2 up on mid mains... Anyone try this on an 01+...
Cool.

Im at least 4 hrs away from Minnesota, near oshkosh if you know where that is...  well dose the dealer sell a complete jet kit or am i suppose to avoid the dealer all together and order them online or something.

Would my local auto store sell stuff like this, i noticed they sell K&n filters,

Hi-T

You can use the dealer... but most of us have learned the hard way that the people working in the dealership may ride a motorcycle but that's about it...

Your jetting will depend mostly on what year the bike is and what type of air filter and exhaust you will be using.  You can order the individual jets for 3 bucks each or you can drop 90 bones on a jet kit that will do the same thing.  If you aren't mechanically inclined or don't care about learning buy a jet kit and/or take it to the dealer.

Autostores and bike stores are different-  You can sometimes find the correct oil, oil filter, and spark plugs and other general auto needs- otherwise go a dealer.

There are a billion and one threads on jetting- do a little research and post back if you need and specific help.

Hi-T

Wait a sec- you said that you already have a full system AFTERMARKET exhaust??

Question 1:  What system is it?
Question 2:  Did you put it on or was it on the bike when you bought it?
Question 3:  Do you still have an air box and if yes, what color is the filter?
Question 4:  Is the bike running poorly?  Does it back fire or surge or give off darker smoke or....

Because: If you you bought the bike with the a full system- odds are that it was rejetted or it'd be running too lean.  If you don't know, take the carbs off the bike, pull the float bowl covers off and read us the numbers on the jets...

1.  I dont remember what header the guy i bought the bike from said for that but its got a two brothers muffler on it.

2.  I bought it with the exhaust system on it already.

3.  Yes still have airbox, the air filter is a white paper filter.

4.  Bike runs fine, just kinda back fires and pops when i let off the throttle.

Hi-T

Cool-   It sounds like you're running a little lean. I'm willing to bet you only have a slip on and that the previous owner did not rejet- but I could be wrong...

All that's left:  What year is the bike (jet sizes changed in '01)?  I'll bet if you go up two sizes on your main jet, up one size on the pilot, shim the needle and turn out your mix screws, the bike will be happy, you'll loose the popping and gain a bit more power.  You'll spend $20 instead of $85 and it'll take you an hour.

Again- I'm assuming that the previous owner didn't rejet- If he did, they are still off- only you may not need the pilots.

Hi-T

Ohh- and lastly- if the bike has been rejetted- a leak in your exhaust system can cause backfiring- especially loose header bolts.  Might be worth checking (you know - just in case).

suzukimad

Mine has a new k&n air filter,(not pods) fitted,in the last few weeks.
It sort of back fires, and pops, but when the revs go over 6000 it`s fine.

the bike is a 1997,and it has ignition/av.A motad nexxus exhaust system
replacement,not race.

And the bike is a UK model.

anyone know what side jets ,ect i need to change too.

127.5 mains and lift the needle 1 clip as it sits in the bike, you already have 40 pilots. Set mix screw to 3 out.

Hi!

Suzukimad, I live in Finland (just for weather comparison) and my GS has a Yoshi RS3 slip on and K&N in box without the air restrictor. The best setting from the many I have tried is: About 3 and 1/2 turns out on the mix screws, needles one position richer (fourth from top) and 125 main jets (with 130 mains it was too lazy on high revs - rich..). The bike flies!! No comparison with stock. Much better torque, much better throttle responce and the rush from 7000 rpm to red line in all gears reminds a good two stroke bike...! If you go too rich on the mix screws you will feel extra vibrations until about 5000 rpm and no clear pulling. It will accelerate still ok but it won't be happy.. You will feel it if you try it. All the above using 95 octane petrol and no slide plugging.

I hope it helps.
Leon
