I have a 1990 gs500e and have carb problems i believe, it likes to idle really hig like around 3500 at times, and if i put load on it it will come back down and stay till i rev a little, i read the following but i'm still confussed on what to do ....

US bikes are bad at warming up. They had 37.5 size pilot jets while the rest of the world got 40, hence the leanness and awful warm up/start up situation. The remedy is to put 40's in place of the 37.5's.  You can order the pilot from a Suzuki dealer near you. You should also install 127.5 large round Mikuni mains, go 2 1/2 turns out on the idle mixture (adjust to taste).

what are the mikuni manis?  what are they for, where are they?   Just help a newbie out.

Thank you.

omg, i can't read at this hour..... it says mains, so i should get what size jets and such for this, i'm new to carbs, i grew up on cars, recently got into bikes.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the confusion...

It does sound like you are lean.  You can play with the idle screw and see if that solves your problem (much less work than swapping in new jets).  Otherwise, #40 pilot jets would be a good start, assuming you have a stock 90 GS500.  The main jets prolly has nothing to do with your 3K idle, but you can swap in bigger ones if you want.  This thing has been discussed to death in the past so if you do a search for something like "jet* matrix", you'll get a thread with a nice little summary of the collective wisdom of gstwins.com on what size jets to use.

Anyway, the pilot jets look like OEM N151.067 here, IIRC.  You can also get them at bike bandit, which is where I got them from.  Or your local dealer (maybe).  If you are going to put in the new jets, might as well pay a few more bucks and get the carb rebuild kits and replace all the gaskets (especially the small little vacuum gaskets at the top) since your bike is kinda old (mine's older ;)) .  There is a nice write-up of this in the tech section where you can access from the main gstwins.com page.

Good luck and cheers,
e.

thanks, yeah, i thought i'd be running lean and since I plan on painting the fram black, i'm stripping it down and using a whole lot of carb cleaner on it, and i went ahead and ordered the 40/127.5 setup for the bike since i do have the k&n filter that replaces the box, and plan on a sv650 exhaust slip on done, thanks for the reply, this is a great forum and will be sticking around.
