Title: GS500 relay around Australia!
Post by: Clancy on August 16, 2010, 04:35:08 AM
Hi Guys

Just an idea at this stage... to gauge expressions of interest etc..

The plan:
For the aussie members of gstwin.com to ride their gs500 Relay Style around Australia...  :thumb:

For example.... Mister (yep I'm volunteering you to get involved..) rides from brissy to Sydney (too easy, 1000km pfft) tags one of our Sydney reps, they ride down to Wollongong, tag me... I'm heading to tassie this summer to I could do  Wollongong to tassie...lap of tassie and tag someone in Melbourne etc..... who may in tern head west towards Adelaide or part thereof and meet another gstwinner to carry the torch...
Feel me?

The Nullabor wont be easy but surely someone got the balls. :cookoo: I know we got peeps from Perth to Cairns but not sure about in between. Anyone in Darwin? :dunno_white:

Time is not of the essence. Could take years and that's cool. Months between legs in no drama. This will be a long term project and I guess if legs happen out of sequence it wont be the end of the world. I know were all busy. I'm studying full time and working and in my hols I'm touring with my band so we'll all have to chip in with the organisational side of things...

What do you think???????
You keen Aussies?
Get involved!

Clancy

I'm in Newcastle I'd be keen to do Newcastle to Wollongong, or Newy to brisbane etc. Sounds cool to me.  :woohoo:

I'm in!

The Mole lives kinda nearby to me and I lurve riding in his neck of the woods. So a ride down to him is easily on the cards.

Up in Darwin we got Pave Spectre. Not sure who is slightly north to me say somewhere around Maroochydore or who could get there from further North.

And we do got someone in Nowra - though if'n you're going way way south that could cover a big chunk of it - could even catch up with some other GS500ers on your great southern leg  :icon_mrgreen:

Something about this is... if you can ride Down to an area - say Sydney to Wollongong, why can't the 'gong rider ride Up to Syd and they Both ride back down to the 'gong?. Or, yeah, meet somewhere half way for lunch?

And, as some kind of Proof.... maybe something, some kind of token, that is passed from rider to rider. Something we can all put our Mark on in some way - Or - just have this thread and post pics from the Exchange - like both bikes and the token in the same pic. Or some other ideas. Like maybe a small plastic box that gets passed around. Could have a piece of paper in it with the names/dates of the riders and the exchange. Maybe even throw in a small pebble from the ground of where the exchange took place? Or...?

So Clancy, it looks like we at least have The Gong to Brissy covered and can at least Start it off.

Awesome guys!

im leaving for tassie late jan so if we could get the northern led happening before then that would be rad!

Im all for something to pass on or a log of sorts and a dedicated thread will be needed for sure.

As i said, i dont have too much time for organising coz im in the middle of a hectic uni degree so if ya wanna gimme a hand with that side of things, Mister?

This thing is looking very possible!

I like this idea. Not sure how someone would go getting up here, would have to be pretty dedicated, she's a fair ol' hike to/from darwin.

Mister could meet me in Byron and I/we could go south from there. Maybe we could work on tracking down more GS riders in Aus and getting them on the site.

I've done the whole trip around in 1999, in the machine in my avatar photo. I was racing a 1929 Chrysler and a mad mate on a 1940 BSA M20. It took us about a month to get around. I take my hat off to the bike rider!

I've got a small plastic box which could hold a List of relay members... as each rider partakes they add their name/details to the list and the leg they rode. Could also use a Rego Tube instead so it'd be more like a baton being passed on.

I think a Google Map showing the route of the baton would also be good. So it could go, for example....

Brisbane to Sunshine Coast, down to Byron, down to Grafton, down to Newcastle, down to Sydney, inland to Bathurst, back east west down to the gong, etc. Doesn't need to be a linear line going only on major highways. Small deviations will work. And each leg/route added to the Google Map.

Just as well, it's not a lap around Oz without a lap around Mt Panorama.

sounds like stitching up brissy to melb including all of tassie will be no sweat...

Melbourne to Adelaide volunteers needed next.

Like your idea about the rego roll Mister.

Good work all.

Damn things are like thirty bux. Screw that!

I just picked up a semi-clear toothbrush holder from Woolies for a buck fifty or something. It's a little more baton-shaped. So we are ready to rock and roll. And I think I can get a start on the journey this weekend!

Is the relay order worked out? How are the legs going? Where am I having coffee? Why am I still up after evening shift? And dam I had a nice fun ride home. Air is nice and cold, no one to bother me while I practice cornering harder. A wee bit tired I will admit.

That's pretty cool guys!!!  Would be cool to pull this off in the US too......!!!  I can't start too much chatter til my bike gets over the flu.....but then, it's on!!!

Might be cool to carry some object......"virtual torch" and take pics with the places in the background.  Just a thought if it hasn't been mentioned.

Have fun with it!!!

Although I'm in Canada I thought I would add in a possible contact who has ridden a GS around Australia. He might have some tips for making the trip.... just guessing though.

YouTube user: chochi70

He is very friendly and like to chat from my experience. I contacted him when I had ride questions about his GS and his Camera mounting.

Thanks for suggesting Chochi, Graham.

I've text chatted with him previously. He did The Great Ocean Road vids. Nice fellow.

There currently is a guy riding a GS500 around Aust. He has a blog http://www.adrianpower.com but it looks like he has stopped in Broome for months - got a job working in a motorcycle store - and has even gotten rid of the GS for a DR650 (sacrilege!) WTF?!

The Baton: Top right, a key ID tag. Has "The GS500 Around Australia Relay written on it" on one side. The other will have a URL on it which will link to a message in this thread. The other end has a Motorcycle Charm. Pull the tube apart to get to the scroll. Scroll has spaces for your name, leg from/to, date and room for a message or note.

Baton Ready. Rider ready. Launch date TBA once rendezvous is arranged with rider receiving the handoff.

Update:

I'll be adding a post to the thread so I can link to it like I link to the Picture Game in my sig file. I'll post That post after this update.

As you know, the Baton is ready. I've worked out a route for the first leg to get it to the next rider. The Baton has already come for a ride in the tank bag so I consider that part of its journey and will add it to the progress map once I've passed the baton on.

All we are waiting for now is some clear weather and a mutually free schedule.

At the moment, the three next available Sunday's are Sep 12, 19 and 26. The 12th sees the Motorcycle Memorial Ride to Somerset Dam Memorial Garden. The space for the garden was donated by the Somerset Dam to be used by the Ulysses Club for a yearly memorial gathering. But really, any motorcycle rider from anywhere can come as a gesture of motorcycle rider unity. I went last year and got these shots...
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi391.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo351%2Flockyer_ulysses%2Fmemorial_2009%2FPano-SomersetService.jpg&hash=d7d9db9326e39481feb14750c4b98b84df9e38f8)

This next one shows about Half the bikes. About just as many were behind me. But not so easy to get in shot. I sent this photo to the Ulysses club and they printed it in their National Magazine.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi391.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo351%2Flockyer_ulysses%2Fmemorial_2009%2FPano-Somerset2.jpg&hash=c2b35543f24f3f6b90fbe841f189f042f9f217e5)

I'm thinking, maybe ride to the memorial with Baton in tow so it has a Motorcyclist Memorial as part of its journey. Then make the baton-pass ride for the 19th or 26th - weather permitting. Need to confirm with The Mole.

The GS500 Around Australia Relay

The Concept: Get an object (in this case a "baton") around Australia by relay from one GS500 rider to another.

The Baton: A toothbrush holder with a keytag on one side and a motorcycle charm on the other. Inside is a scroll with the names and route leg details of those who have participated in the relay.

Start Date: 12-Sep-2010
Completion Date: xx-xxx-201x

Starting location: BP Blacksoil.
Current Location: The baton is currently in the hands of Shaddow (down Newcastle way) and awaiting the next part of the journey after the Baton exchange at Denman on Nov 28, 2010.

The weather was good for the Memorial Ride so, that's where the Baton went...

At the starting point - BP Blacksoil
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4128%2F4982245208_3b65b65227_z.jpg&hash=3cdedda204cb0eafb48c740b90678d60db560e64)

Regroup on the side of the road - I am second from the right (from the front - I went right to the back after marking the next corner). This shows only the bikes which left from the BP at Blacksoil.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4089%2F4981641577_fac8aa9571_z.jpg&hash=5bee1148d0eb71ccf34f5c2bbbe2b47ea307d1b5)

At the Memorial Gardens
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4109%2F4981641727_2396d0ed55_z.jpg&hash=4b7c888a1b60e9855f94b147a59d5f91b237515a)

While standing chatting at the Memorial Gathering, I see a GS pull in. Didn't recognize it at first with the Dominator Headlights. Saw it again a few minutes later. Figured I just might know who this is. Approached. Asked. It was. So we rode the rest of the day together. Not yet a GSTwinner - seems the manual registration has taken over a week... is this normal? (Note the bar end mirrors, turn signals, handlebar itself, exhaust. Looks nice. Sounds good too  :thumb: :thumb:)
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4104%2F4982245540_6bd3f872e1_z.jpg&hash=9a7652317df1b2f4820999d8330fe011446fd185)

Okay. Now to get in touch with The Mole to arrange the next leg.

Was a good ride, except for the wanker in the pickup truck that was swerving to the wrong side of the road on blind bends through the twisties and speeding up to 140km's an hour in an effort not to let me pass. Thank god no motorcycles were coming the other way or it would have been fatal. Wound the GS up and flipped the bird as I cruised past. Thing is he had motorbikes in the back of his pick up. Think he would know better.

Wow, this sounds a great idea and a massive challenge in Australia.  Reminds me of last summer's holidays: Perth > Sydney > Brisbane > Cairns > Brisbane... then back to Scotland via Singapore.  Ah, just memories now.

Anyway, some thoughts
1) Make sure the baton is waterproof or the detailed records of handovers and locations could be damaged... oh, forgot you're not doing this round the UK!
2) Perhaps this topic could show who has the baton, not just where it is.
3) In between handovers, could the current holder take the baton everywhere they ride, and track these routes on the map somehow?
4) Has the map been started and is there a link to the map?
5) I do a bit of riding around Scotland with work.  Anyone in UK fancy this idea?  Ok, for the pedants out there, I really mean Great Britain primarily i.e. the biggest single land mass in the British Isles.  Should be fairly easy to include other parts such as Isle Of Man, Ireland (both countries), Inner and Outer Hebrides, Arran, Cumbrae, etc etc.

Enjoy!

The map is done - but - it will only be put up once the next handover has taken place. Which, weather permitting, will be the 17th. That way the map is more extensive.

And, once the handover has taken place, yes, then Where it is and on the map will also be shown. Who has it will also be known as that is part of the handover process.

Taking the baton everywhere between handovers is possible. As long as Everywhere is not too crazy - shops, work, friend's place, back home, work, different shops, etc. main weekend excursions a definite yes. And some photos of such too. Nice.  :thumb: And I'm think a small online list of places would be cool too. Such as... Ulysses memorial, Tooloom Falls, etc., as kinda of landmarks of its journey.

I have been asked about taking the baton global. I'm good with that. BUT, let's get it around Aust first. Or...instead... start such a baton in each continent instead.

Rode my bike for the first time in a month yesterday, after work, holidays, rain, work, rain and more rain. I thought I'd have to trade it in on a jetski!

Twisted, Pave is in Darwin. So unless he's Real keen, he won't be on this part of the journey  :icon_mrgreen:

Maccas at Nerang is Easy to find. As you come UP the highway, take exit 73. At the roundabout you'll have the choice to get back onto the highway (no, don't do this) or take the service road called Hinkler Drive (yes, take this exit). A click or so further along this road you'll see Maccas on the left. Left at the lights and then Left into Maccas. Pull up somewhere on the left in the carpark just after the driveway - opposite the drive thru windows and overlooking the Caltex servo - and you'll be able to see us come in easier. Here's a Google Map http://tinyurl.com/2fdqlbh

Around 9 will do nicely. We'll be leaving our end 8am and it takes around an hour to get there. We'll have a cuppa there before heading off around 9:30-ish - or a tad after 9:30-ish, however long it takes to have a cuppa  :thumb:

Mole, you've got my number. So if you get hopelessly lost there - like you miss Exit 73 and need to take exit 71 and end up at the BP - give me a yell and I'll come get you once we get down there. But you'll be right.

As you come up the highway and get into South Tweed take it easy. There is a Traffic Monitoring gantry over the road - maybe speed cameras - and after it turns to 70 and you get through the lights, there is some speed cameras as well. So take it easy until the limit goes back up again. And do take it easy in the Qld side. There are favourite speed camera places - such as just before Mudgeeraba - but unless you know them you won't see them until it's too late.

My mate with the CB400 will ring me in the morning to let me know if he is coming. I said we could meet him at the Logan motorway exit onto the Pacific highway there somewhere at 8.30? He has to ride from the northside of Brisbane so I thought that would be better than making him meet us in Ipswich. Is there anyone else coming other than Mister, mole, me and maybe my friend? No other GS riders out there keen for a Sunday ride? What about your mate with the GS Mister?

Yep. He's coming. So all up there will be four GS500s.

If your CB400 friend comes tell him to pull into the BP at Yatala and we'll pick him up there - I think it's Exit 38, from Memory, but he should see the BP and Macca signs from the highway. It'll be safer than waiting somewhere on the side of the road.

If anyone else in Brisbane/Gold Coast is reading this and wants to tag along on your GS500 - Oct 17th 2010 - Send me a text at 0407 726 271. We'll be leaving Yamanto Maccas at 8am on the dot. Getting to Nerang Maccas around 9. Having a cuppa and then Heading off to Eltham for lunch - refuel at Murwillimbah. I'll give an additional and more-detailed Ride Brief at Nerang before we head off.

UPDATE to the message above...

After posting the above I figured I'd better check to see if our route or ride in general would be crossing any other rides...

Team Moto - All clear
Pro Motorcycles - All clear.
There is an MX ride at Tivoli - we won't be near it so no probs.
I figured I'd better check all the Ulysses Branches. I just found the Gold Coast Ulysses is riding to Eltham! A quick phone call to the ride coordinator... they meet at Nerang Maccas. Their Eltham ride will not leave until 10am - we'll already be gone. I have the name of the Ride Leader for the ride and will locate him when we arrive (assuming he is there early, and the coordinator said some of them get there Real early) so there won't be any confusion about our two rides leaving from the same place. The ride coordinator said their riders park all over the place. So Mole, still park opposite the drive-through pickup windows overlooking the Caltex.

Hey, I'm easily old enough to be a Ulysses member!

Nearly got a mate on an ST1100 to come along, but he has to work. Would have been fun showing him the way through the twisties.

Just checked some other Ulysses branches and Logan branch is riding down to Brunswick Heads. No idea on their route and they leave Wembley Rd Maccas at 8:30. So they Should be passed us by then. And they shouldn't be interfering on the twisties sections so all good.

The first step of the relay was completed today, I met Michael, David and David at Nerang (south of Brisbane) and we took a lot of nice twisty backroads down the Numinbah valley through Murwillumbah to Mullumbimby and on to lunch at the Eltham pub, then home via Bangalow while the others went back north on the highway. It was a stunning day for a ride, nice and sunny but not too hot and there were quite a lot of bikes around. No doubt Michael will be on here later to post some pics and prove that it did happen!
Thanks for the ride guys!

I'll be updating the main info post later with some route details. In the meantime...

When we were to leave for the meetup and there was just two of us, a guy came ambling over, looked at the bikes and said... "Twins, you know they stopped making them 15, 20 years ago cause they were too inefficient." "Well, that's an 05 and this is an 09." "Are they 600s?" "Nope, both 500s, the 650 twins are V, these are parallel." He ogled some more and wandered off.

Start - where we met up.

(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4149%2F5088386859_a122b95791.jpg&hash=a5ec3af041e279cdb2c9cfad127c58cb0207af78)

Not quite midway to lunch. The odd thing about this is... while you approach this you are riding in a valley - hills higher on either side. You round a corner and BLAMO, this is what you see. Absolutely breathtaking. There were some people there, but as soon as we pulled up they quickly got in their car and took off.

(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4084%2F5088986028_0bfb6a09dc_z.jpg&hash=13687d98f119bfbec547e27c508af9e4e609568b)

The Exchange Place - Eltham Pub. Shortly after the exchange the baton in new hands (or hand as you can see). Names and dates added. Lunch finished. Let's roll ramblers...

Adieu and adiĆ³s - we pull over for roadside farewells as we part company. Mole now has the baton.

(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm5.static.flickr.com%2F4103%2F5088387157_0c3061b101.jpg&hash=50ce9cd7e3beb4d89805e12692ab4f59a5f832c8)

We have The Shadow in Newcastle who is up for it, Mole.

Michael

P.S. In my haste to get this up I forgot the most important thing...

Thank You for coming on the ride

Un is based in Tamworth - a bit over 450kms away depending.

I just did a quick check. Roughly, half way between the two is a small place called Tyringham. A "locality" more so. But, there are like a half dozen homes there. And, according to Google Map - see here http://tinyurl.com/333439x - there is a BP servo (kinda of a servo and general store). I just did a bit of a search and got a number for the store (02) 6657 8164 and a quick call showed they still sell petrol and the old BP sign is still there (see Google map for close up pic)

OK, have just exchanged emails with Uninhibited and it looks like we're going to Tyringham on the 31st! The more direct route from Grafton to Tyringham via Nymboida looks like a good bike road with plenty of corners, but on the return I'm going to HAVE to go to Grafton through Dorrigo and Coramba, then north to Glenreagh. Get on Google Earth and check the road between Dorrigo and Coramba.....it looks INSANE. It is 58km, and the straight-line distance is 30km, the longest straight is 1.2km!!! Some of the corners look like first gear only!
 :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
Mister, Twisted, David, if you guys are up for it you could come down to my place on Saturday, stay the night and come along...looks like a real adventure.

I just had a quick look with Google Maps Street View. I saw DIRT! :o Looks like it turns to dirt near Megan and comes good near Ulong - around 20kms of dirt. Of course, that was when the Sat image and street view were taken. Some things might be different now.

Good call Michael, i didn't look at street view, assuming they wouldn't have been down there. I'm sure nothing would have changed. Funny thing is my GPS always asks if I want to avoid 'unmade roads' and when I planned this route it didn't come up. Anyway, I don't mind riding a good dirt road, and we don't have to go that way if we don't want to.

Miraz,

We need to get it to Sydney and to Bathurst too, before getting it further south. The Shadow is in Newcastle and will probably get the next leg - or one of the other riders around there, cause there are a few - from Tam to Syd. Then we'll see how to get it to Bathurst for Bubba's trip around My Panorama. And we have some riders around Austinmere, Thirroul, etc. BUT, thre is no reason more than one person cannot ride on a leg with another.

Well, it's an important bit of kit and needs the protection / personal body guards. Just make sure to throw some GS500 stickers or sticky notes onto the other bikes so at least in name they are GS500s  :D

The baton is in Tamworth! This is the mole, Nick, Gobby and John. John led most of the ride on his Triumph Daytona (because he knew the way!), Nick was on the '76 BMW R100 and Gobby left the Ducati special at home and brought his FZ1. Big John who took the photo rode his ST1300.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1205.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb438%2Fthe_mole%2FIMG_0882.jpg&hash=1e397054fefd3de0713c888339cb526f1bed13bb)

This is me handing the baton to Ross. His bike is a near new '09, I think it looks great in blue without the tank stripes. Hope you had a good ride home Ross, the weather held for us, with sunshine all the way home.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1205.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb438%2Fthe_mole%2FIMG_0885.jpg&hash=911a07b8394dfa074b03b8d1b233323a5fc43bfa)

Here's the two GSs in front of the BP sign Michael!
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1205.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb438%2Fthe_mole%2FIMG_0884.jpg&hash=48446b0797c59b6f31c92a07b9f04fc7b5fb5165)

And this is the view in the other direction. That's Tyringham, blink and you've missed it! Big John in the pink shirt.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi1205.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fbb438%2Fthe_mole%2FIMG_0887.jpg&hash=b484873625ee1321c3b02100765775eeccb6a632)

The route was south from Byron on the coast road, then thanks to John we cut inland west of the highway and were on back roads to Alstonville and Lawrence, across on the ferry to the west side of the river and down to Grafton. Some of us refuelled there and after a coffee we headed south west to Nymboida. West of Nymboida the road gets seriously twisty, with many corners marked at 25 or 35 km/h. Its a pretty narrow road, and a few dead kangaroos and some stray cattle on the roadside kept us on our toes. John had been leading with a nice easy pace, but when we hit this section he turned it up a few notches. Gobby was right behind him on the FZ1, and Nick was just keeping in touch on his BMW. Most of it is a fairly steep climb and the boys weren't wasting any time between the bends, so I had to really push the GS to keep up with Nick. For about 25 km I was hardly ever under 7500 rpm and if I wasn't in a corner it was full throttle! Only had one 'moment', when I came into a left hander braking hard and changed down a bit too aggressively. The rear locked and stepped out, but I got off the brake and it came back. To be honest, it had been 30 years since I'd ridden as hard as that and it took a little while to settle into the rhythm, but to be able to hang with the litre bikes through the twisties was a nice feeling. It really wasn't the ideal road for the ST 1300, and big John pulled into Tyringham nearly 10 minutes behind us. After meeting up with Ross, exchanging the baton and having a chat for a while we decided to head back to Nymboida for lunch. Had a great burger at the pub there, and a look at the museum which had some historical artifacts from the area, a few interesting old bikes and some paraphernalia from the movie "Gladiator". We re-traced our route back to Grafton and Lawrence, but then cut north to Casino. Nick left us there to go back to Uki via Kyogle, and for the rest of us it was east to Lismore and Bangalow where we split up and headed home. All in all a great day's ride!

Very cool. Where is the baton off to next?

Went for a ride with Mister today out to Crows Nest with some very fast bikes. The poor GS was panting behind them. At one stage I was cruising along at 140k's and a Busa blew buy like I was standing still. The guys on the speed triples were a bit wussy, managed to leave them in the twisties and I am not that great riding in them.

The baton is in Tamworth.  Had a reasonably uneventful ride back, traffic was light, no rain just a bit of a swirling head wind.  Glad it didn't rain but due to the forecast of precipitation and as you can see from the photo I had decided to wear the all weather pants, so I ended up sweating like a paedophile in rompus room.
So where to next?

There I am minding my business at 130. Nothing in the mirror. A few seconds later... Vroom... Busa flies by. Peppers me with bits of the road. One hits my finger end on - farken hurt that did.

Don't know what's up with the Speed Triple guys. I caught them. Sat about 115 behind them for five minutes. Every time they came to a bend they slowed down even more. WTF? Screw that. See ya later. Blew past two Speed Triples in the sweepers, left them for dust in the twisties while I caught a VTR1000 and Z750.  :woohoo: Never caught the woman on the B King though.

Well done David (and co) and Ross. Next step is to get the baton to Newcastle, then into Sydney, then to Bathurst before getting it back to Sydney. David, Alstonville to Lawrence is a BIG gap Did you head into Lismore then Casino and end up going down Sumerland down to Lawrence or....

Ross, any chance you can get a photo of the baton on your bike at the Big Guitar please and put it up?

Calling The Shadow. Calling The Shadow. (Miraz, where are you based - suburb?)

Northern Beaches - Mona Vale

Assuming Shadow wants to do the leg to Newcastle, then I'd suggest the Denman pub as a suitable handover for the next leg down to Sydney - which would allow for a loop of the Old Pacific Highway and Putty Rd.
For the leg to Bathhurst I'd suggest either Lithgow or Jenolan Caves as a suitable handover point

David, Alstonville to Lawrence is a BIG gap Did you head into Lismore then Casino and end up going down Sumerland down to Lawrence or....

Michael
We went from Alstonville down Wardell Rd, Bagotville Rd, Kilgin Rd to Woodburn then on the Pac Hwy to Maclean, Lawrence Rd to Lawrence, then across the river by ferry to the Grafton-Lawrence Rd.

Q: How do you travel 200 meters but only move 15, while passing 10 cars and a truck?
A: Filtering on the ferry!

.....there is a group ride headed from Sydney to Bathhurst on the 14th November, it might be an idea to aim to try to get it down to Sydney in time for that run.

Yes, The Shadow did respond to my email stating he is still keen to be apart of the relay, to which I replied I would like to pass the baton by early December.  If the shadow and I can not make a date line up in this time then other arrangments will have to be made.

Miraz, due to staff shortages at work and other commitments the only day I have available before Nov 21 is the 11th, even thats a bit of a squeeze.  My current work roster expires on 21/11 but a new one should be released this week and that one will take me through to mid January.

Anyway if its not too much of a problem I will await a response from the shadow re his availability and my roster.  Does that sound fair?

Hey guys, sorry for the lateness of my appearance, been flat out with work and two sideline projects that are killing me. I can't do weekdays and at the moment I can only do Sunday's, my free ones being 21/11, 28/11 and 5/12. Nothing sooner I'm afraid. If someone can do it quicker go for it, otherwise if that's okay we can plan for one of those days.

So the 5th December for Broke? ( we are talking about the place on the other side of Pokolbin right?). Week days are still out for me in early December and the weekend after the 5th I doubt I will be even able to get my body to respond enough to get onto the bike even though I'm free one of the days. (I've a very painful Saturday planned for the 11th of December, so Sunday will be lying around feeling sorry for myself as my muscles fail to respond and no its not getting wasted Saturday night!)

Yup - that's the place, it's the top end of the Putty Rd - so the Sydney folks can do the OPH->Wollembi->Broke then back south via the Putty Rd

Nope. Got a martial arts grading on the 11th. I don't expect my body to be in very good nick for at least a week after that, to the point that I'll probably be driving everyday to work and I ride all weather normally, unless I need to carry stuff.

The next round of the relay is 28th of November, Tamworth to Deman Hotel arriving about 12ish. From there it will travel to Newcastle.

On the 4th of December I will take it from Newcastle to Broke. It's the top end of the Putty Rd - so the Sydney folks can do the OPH->Wollembi->Broke then back south via the Putty Rd.

Will firm up a meeting point closer to the time, but either the Mobil in Berowra (A on the map) - or the Mt White Cafe (B) on the map.

It's on its way again.  Last seen heading South from Musswellbrook.

Mister when you update the map: Tyringham, Armidale, Uralla, Tamworth, Musswellbrook and the handover at Denman.

Just because I thought it was cool here is a big chook

And Yes I've got more shots. Let me tell you a tale. So I got my bike (https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff252%2Fshaddow78%2Fbike%2F1011280023.jpg&hash=bf62a3b3af54f3ea2de16261397806a76aa03d42), made some directions which we completely ignored as I missed a corner and just made it up from memory while using some rode signs to work out where to go. No it wasn't that bad, we found all the good corners and some I've never seen before.

First though meet my crew.

There is me.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff252%2Fshaddow78%2Fbike%2F1011280024.jpg&hash=78060cabb25b4afadde50d42b33d6c60a49f1d2f)

Then there is the the YZF600 Rider
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff252%2Fshaddow78%2Fbike%2F1011280026.jpg&hash=e08e29470329e0c614ed964e81ba242f52a6e0b8)

Then there is the... well look at the helmet and I bet you can guess what he is riding. Its got a 1600cc engine, a cam so lumpy most V8 owners would be jealous and a fuel range of next to nothing.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff252%2Fshaddow78%2Fbike%2F1011280027.jpg&hash=3e57faa08809fed9508b7bf82181b68e82c61093)

Here are our three bikes togetherish. This was a stop due to the HD rider complaining about Monkey butt.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff252%2Fshaddow78%2Fbike%2F1011280021.jpg&hash=fcd86a718a92900f40f39545f9162e4cd52f1c65)

We arrived at the Denman hotel, having met only one cop and me being stung on my neck by a WASP! (Couldn't have been a bee it I've got two welts!) There we met our motorbiking brother.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff252%2Fshaddow78%2Fbike%2F1011280030.jpg&hash=5ff51b331d3be8f7bc80cdbe2d946d03b54ba184)

We exchanged the holy item.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff252%2Fshaddow78%2Fbike%2F1011280029.jpg&hash=44513e393ecef9ca1065e6c17d650a6f9c78ebd3)

We ate a good lunch then went our separate ways. After some slight aggressive riding we arrived back in Maitland where the YZF (yes that's right the Harley did not break down it was the Jap bike that broke) decided who needs a voltage regulator. With the only tools between the three bikes being one allen key, a Phillips screw driver and pliers we got to work getting our brethren upright again. Basically we stripped the wires bare on my power socket cable, wired it to the YZF's battery, started the GS and let it charge the YZF's battery. We then stripped the YZF of every fuse it didn't need to run, headlights, indicators (left it with a brake light) and nursed it home.
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi49.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ff252%2Fshaddow78%2Fbike%2F1011280032.jpg&hash=b49f308f03f1a64a83c0c58b4f6714b197679f4c)

So currently the holy object is residing in Newcastle where it will go back North to the nice twisty roads of Broke to go back South. Hmmm.....
Either way stay tune I'm sure there will be more photos.

I knew their was a way to make a trip down the New England more interesting.

I noticed you didn't hook the HD up to do the charging but I understand you probably didn't want to have to bikes broken and if anyone ever asks you can always tell 'em your little Zook makes enough electricity for 2 bikes!

Trust me we had a ball. In fact I got a phone call from the HD rider. His leg muscles are finally working well enough that he can walk without looking like he just hoped off a horse.

Slug  yes amusing......... yes it is my tongue....... lol!

Mr Miraz we shall meet in the servo that has the little cafe attached to it in Broke. Trust me you can't miss it, plus all the motorbikes stop there. There will only be me from my direction at this time. I'll see you at Lunch.

That was the idea, looks like there may be a few folk coming up from Sydney so we should be pretty easy to spot.

Hmm....just to throw a spanner in the works.....I managed to run over a roll of electrical cable this evening which took the front end out and sent the bike spinning down the road at 70 odd km/h...

No serious damage, but need to find some new pegs and other things before it's fit to do a big ride

Anyone else want to step up to do this leg, or do we reschedule?

Walk the holy item around the bike three times to allow its magic to heal thy steed. (Make sure you hold your tongue right otherwise the magic won't work - correct tongue position only known by those who know and it cannot be described or taught, so good luck with that  :thumb:)

In other news... have updated the details / map page. Could not add extra destinations to the first map so created a second which should be good for a few handoffs - see my relay link in sig file.

MIRAZ: Let me know whats happening one way or another. Can try and reschedule or I could ride down to Sydney with it. I'm easy either way.

So thought I'd but up a map of how I got to the pickup. Which would have composed half my journey for drop off but I can't work out how to embed the code. Help

If it's a Google Map, on the top left of the map is a link called Link. Clicking it will give you a drop down box with a link for the map. Copy That code and simple paste it into the forum.

For more advanced use, third icon from the left is Insert Hyperlink. Click it. After the first URL, type = and then the code. So it'd look like (URL=http:// www.gstwin.com)Word Here(/URL) - where the ( & ) are replaced with [ & ].

The pics I show are cropped screen caps.

And the Putty Rd... swe-e-e-e-e-et. Haven't been on that road in like 10 years. And I'd always laugh when getting to a sign that said 16km winding road and I'd think "what the heck have I just been through?"

lol, ive driven the putty road a few times, but never ridden on it, so im really looking forward to it..
my bikes been sitting for a while (ever since i moved back to sydney and my son was born)
so, its about time i treated the bike/myself to a day on the road..
oh, then on the way back, once the putty road ends, ill take bells line of road, which from memory is lots more of the same stuff as putty!  :woohoo:

heres a quick map, are all these roads ok?

Just keep an eagle eye out for Law Enforcement on Bells Line Of. And while you ride along that road, why not do a short five minute detour onto Powells Rd for a shot of this
Castle (http://maps.google.com.au/maps/ms?hl=en&gl=au&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=211678981999843074549.0004992abfe3fa5de9c82&ll=-33.521044,150.468294&spn=0,0.006968&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=-33.520957,150.468261&panoid=rcR0NIp4SDdMi9-ufKzyeQ&cbp=12,220.11,,0,10.06) - the guy built it all himself by hand!

If you've not done a long stint in the saddle before - or for a while - make sure you make micro movements and adjustments to your seating position Before you start to get sore (also vary your foot position - heel, arch, toe on peg, lift knee so on tiptoe / raise toe into air while heel/arch on peg, for extreme put feet on pillion pegs). Take along some paracetamol in case your muscles start to freeze up and you need to relax them. Take along Plenty of water and make sure you drink heaps. When cleaning your visor at a servo, don't use the window washing water (who knows what petro chemical crude is in it), instead, use a paper towel you wet with the small pouring cans, from the nearby tap or from the toilet's hand basin. Carry some KFC hand wipes for your visor as well. Every time you stop - every single time - call your missus (she might not say it but she will be concerned about you and will appreciate your calls). Every time you stop, stretch (your quadriceps, ham string, calf, shoulders, upper back, sides. Where boxers instead of briefs as the hem of the briefs will become annoying by the end of the day.

The biggest thing, however, would be to know this is extreme for a first big outing. Looks like you've got 200km to Broke, then 300km from Broke to Bathurst. That's 500km and you still got another 115km to get home. With that kind of distance (tad over 600km) and on roads you cannot travel at 100 on all the way, it's gonna be a Massive all day affair for you. Assuming Google's times are somewhat correct - they never are, but assuming - then you've got two 1.5 hour stints to get to Broke, three 1 hour 20 stints to get to Bathurst and then a 1.5 hour run home. For 8 hours of saddle time. If you average 80kph while riding, that's still 7.5 hours in the saddle. Not saying don't do it, rather, be aware that the day will be long - and - seeing as it's been a while for you you Will get quite fatigued.

can't wait to see the photos... :thumb:

Post by: luohanfan on January 13, 2011, 01:03:50 AM
Well that's the first half done..
The weather was good and i had a great ride on the way to broke, one big thing i got out of riding my bike again was it reminded me just how well these bikes handle..

I met up with shaddow at broke, (a pleasure meeting you mate!) and had a bit of a chat with him before heading off..
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi203.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa141%2Ffree_chopper101%2FBroke.jpg&hash=285056318d12f63cfc4facf5e012b9e2c49bbc4e)

I stopped just up the road as i got back onto the putty, to have a look at the putty road truck memorial..
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi203.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa141%2Ffree_chopper101%2Ftruckmemorial.jpg&hash=b22ae1b9807f47ed2e2e61321598f917ecb5f72e)

Next stop was the old halfway roadhouse, not much left of it these days, it burnt down a while back..
I couldn't believe it, i went to use the loo and there is a sign " $1 per person to use toilets, privately run"
Well i dropped $1 in the box, finished my business there and headed off on my way again..
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi203.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa141%2Ffree_chopper101%2Froadhouse.jpg&hash=1a8dfe51432f9215c523c31b38ecde87ef50de47)

I got stuck behind a bit of traffic going through Richmond, so pulled up for a second at the RAAF base and took a quick pick before heading for home..
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi203.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Faa141%2Ffree_chopper101%2FRAAF.jpg&hash=c9dddccf5be638e54c7850df1eb15fb9555fea78)

I didn't get to do bells line of road, i was warned that it is closed for the moment, lots of roadworks, so ill see if i can do the loop through there when i head off to meet the next person..

Heres a map of my route and the stops i made so far..

Nice too see it on it's way. I want to ask. Will it be passing the Belanglo State Forest? Is anyone willing to get the baton into a creepy shot next to the sign at the entrance?

So where does the baton travel to now? I know a GS rider in WA if it's allowed to be posted somewhere.

Awesome stuff!  :thumb: :thumb:

The baton gets back into Sydney (maybe visits the Opera House or Harbour Bridge or CP Tower or Luna Park or all of them) and heads South, via The Gong (even if it then comes back from The Gong to go inland via The Hume  :dunno_black:) down into Vic, Tas and then to Adelaide. I'm thinking it might need to be posted from Adelaide to Perth and then from Perth to... maybe the former GS500 rider who Was doing the around Aust trip or cause he's partying too much now maybe straight to Pave in Darwin.

Canberra to Bathurst and back in a day would be a bit much for me. I've only just started riding and it'd be the best part of eight hours. Don't think I should try concentrating for that long just yet. If anyone can get it within a couple of hours of Canberra I'm happy to take it for all sorts of adventures.

Yeah I could do that on a weekend.  Ride out through the mountains on a saturday and get the baton, then a royal national park run on sunday down through Stanwell to Wollongong. I'll look at the weekend of the 26th/27th, time off work and clutch plates permitting.

Just gotta make sure I'm not working that weekend and that I've resolved my clutch issues, but yeah that does sound good.  I wonder if I can sort out some company to go to Bathurst.
Title: Re: GS500 relay around Australia!
Post by: Cosimo_Zaretti on March 22, 2011, 02:13:22 AM
Can I reserve the option of shifting this a little later?  I'm trying to organise a ride to bathurst and back, which I could just do myself this saturday, but I'm getting the feel that if I leave it a week or so, I can get more bikes along for the ride.

Are their any other GS riders on here interested in either Sydney to bathurst and back (and it will be a pretty interesting and not at all direct route), or a royal national park run to deliver it to Wollongong?  I'm trying to get some of the Netrider guys along on an asortment of machines, it'd be cool to have more than one GS500 in the mix.

I did a run up the old road this afternoon, and I've decided to address a few little niggles with my bike before the bathurst run.  New friction plates in the clutch chief among them.

Had a wekend run out to Bathurst a week back. Weekend traffic+current on-going roadworks in Blue Mtns area HORRIBLE. Nasty gravel roadworks with tidal operation too a few km east of Bathurst... and road works with a 60kph enforcable eastbound on the Victoria Pass. Apart from that, a nice run..not much copper activity in evidence 'cept coming down from the Blue Mountains and down towards Penrith.

You should have gone Bells line and then from Lithgow to Tarana and into Bathurst. You don't take the Highway, it's as boring as bat poo.

Well I'm organising a ride for Saturday leaving Richmond at 9AM, hopefully some people will join me, if not I'll have fun solo.  For you GStwin members the details are here. http://www.netrider.net.au/forums/showthread.php?t=120603 (http://www.netrider.net.au/forums/showthread.php?t=120603).  We'll ride up to Mount Panorama for the obligatory lap, and possibly some more laps once we've scouted for coppers.  It would be the ideal spot for a handover if you're home Bubba.  If you're not, I'll do it anyways, Bells line to Lithgow then the road through Tarana is too much fun to pass up.
Title: Re: GS500 relay around Australia!
Post by: Cosimo_Zaretti on April 02, 2011, 04:34:01 AM
Well I went out to Richmond this morning, then rode up Bells line through Kurrajong, Bilpin up to Lithgow.  From Lithgow I took Magpie Hollow road through Sodwall to Tarana, then Mutton Falls rd through to Oconnel rd and nth into Bathurst.

I met up with Bubba for the baton handover and a few laps of Mount Panorama, keeping it at a legal pace, especially with the undercover cop car on the track.  Originally I'd planned to more or less retrace my steps, but I decided not to leave out Jenolan, so I headed south to Oberon through Edith then down some mental hairpins, through the cave and up Jenolan caves road.  It turned pretty cold after the caves, which put a bit of a dampner on my enjoyment on what was actually the best road of the lot.  There are some beautiful sets of corners after the narrow bits around Jenolan as you head back toward Mount Victoria.  It's good smooth grippy blacktop with lots of continuously radiused corners.  It reminds me of some of the Old Pac, but without the stupid 60km/h sections.   It does rise to around 1200m elevation, so it can get a bit nippy as it did this afternoon.

After I'd had a good meal break and warmed up at Mount victoria I was pretty much out of daylight, and it was looking like rain, so I canned the idea of cutting back to Bell and back down Bell's Line and pulled out the wet weather gear and headed down the Highway.  The return journey was dark and rainy till Penrith, then just plain boring on the M4.  I made up some songs about being bored in the privacy of my own helmet, none of them worth remembering.

Ride Bells Line if you haven't already done so kids, and definately ride to Jenolan.  I got a few pics on the way, but not many.  I'll get them up later.

Thanks to Bubba Zanetti for taking the time to meet up.

Post by: Cosimo_Zaretti on April 08, 2011, 02:30:44 AM
Ok, I was going to make my next trip a nasho run to get the baton further south, but then there was the netrider brunch run the next day up the putty where we ended up doing to the whole loop through mangrove mountain and Wiseman's ferry.  Then My girlfriend went to visit her mum up in Coffs Harbour, and I decided to ride up there, but only after overnighting in Armidale, going up via Thunderbolts way, then down the Dorrigo road, a night in coffs and then back to Sydney

The weather and a few other delays saw me doing a lot of it in rubbish weather in the dark, but I still feel like I had an adventure.  I want a crack at Thunderbolts and the dorrigo descent with dry tarmac.

Anyways the baton's now travelled about 2000kms in my possession, most of it in completely the wrong direction.  I should probably get it down to Wollongong some time.

Round trip from wollongong to Bermagui on the far south coast of nsw then tathra, bega, cobargo then back to wollongong (can you update the map Mister????). About 800kms that weekend tho no photos, sorry- no bat and between phones at the time. 400km of commuting and more to come.

CALLING ALL ACT GSers!!!!!!!!!!  Your time has come! I've got fam up there with bikes so i'll be up there at the drop of a hat!

Pics of the exchange as promised.

I'm in the ACT, happy to add another GS into the mix.

Prob would be that i'd have to hand it over pretty much in state though as i don't have a great deal of time to do any decent trips (that and on my L's would make some looooooong (and slow) riding.)

not yet bro.... Well it has, twice but not for the handover...

I'll be up there in a few week for sure. The Mrs lives up there now for work...

Maybe the ACT gsers can meet me in Tarago or hit some of those sweet twisties round the Cotter. Awesome roads up there.

Anyone keen?

While I applaud the idea of trying to get this batton around Oz,  I think in all reality it will probably just end up traversing the east coast.

Awesome. So when it's ready we can get it into SA. Only thing Stroztech, getting it to WA might be a biatch. Might just need to post it. And the person in WA post it up to Darwin for Pave Spectre to take it.

Dont worry, me too. My heart lies in soul, jazz and roots reggae. i also play these and am an audio engineer. This is just one project. Just ridding the system of some residual teenage angst. Silly music but fun to play. good for a laugh and free trip around the country.

you may have to hover your mouse over the pic to see it...

Hi Guys,
Firstly I must apologise for my absence of late. To cut a long story short, the ex and I are no longer together.

But enough about that ... this thread is about the baton!

The baton is in my possesion here in Adelaide, and I am looking forward to taking it on a tour of some of the Adelaide Hills this coming Sunday morning.
I'll post photos and route next week.

As for WA, it may happen yet.
I have 5 weeks off in October, and am thinking about taking a trip either to Perth  :cookoo: or back to Melbourne.
It would be great to get the baton "from sea to shining sea" if possible, and it would undoubtedly be an adventure on the GS, but October is some time off yet, and I don't want to be seen as delaying the baton's epic journey around and across our great land.  :dunno_black:

Do we have any GS-ers in Perth or WA ??

Anyways, it's food for thought.
Will catch you all next week :)

Well, the Baton and I headed off last Sunday for a quick jaunt through the Adelaide Hills.
The sun was shining in Adelaide, but as soon as we hit the Hills, the weather turned damp and cold.
However, the Hills Twisties again failed to disappoint!

First stop was Beerenberg at Hahndorf

Followed by hot chocolate at the Amberlight Motorcycle Cafe at Lobethal

Then a dash over to the Big Rocking Horse at Gumeracha

Yes! Mad keen I'm located gossy nsw (between newy and sydney) only prob there is we have sum making thousand km legs and some 200 km and if it does past my way I'm prob not the only member around here and was thinking how about you keep location, date, time and meeting place posted at each leg so we could possibly meet up and have groups riding it to the next leg, obviously organize who at each leg will actually carry the (torch) to the next spot so we don't have a leg where no one shows up to carry it on but I'm sure you get my gist I can't be the only one who doesn't want to miss this and this way if your leg is already covered you don't have to miss out! So you're still in NT until the new year. So we have a while to find a Perth rider yet. Hmmm.

Well to update my situation. Barring anything untoward I start work in Perth in January, and will be heading there in about mid december.

There is a possibility that I could ride the bike via adelaide and pick up the baton on the way, however I would need to confirm details fairly soon as I am in the process of organising my removal, deciding on route and which vehicle will get sent via transport.
Title: Re: GS500 relay around Australia!
Post by: mister on September 30, 2012, 09:06:14 PM
You getting it from Adelaide to Perth would be great. Then we'd just need to figure how to get it to Darwin and then from there, back across into Qld and back down to me.

With such a huge barren distance I'd be thinking posting it would have to be an option.

Michael
Title: Re: GS500 relay around Australia!
Post by: pave_spectre on September 30, 2012, 09:43:44 PM
Yeah, I am just aesthetically against the idea of posting it. I much prefer the idea of it making the whole distance by bike. If we cant get new Darwin riders once I am gone, I am even not averse to taking a chunk of leave and traveling around the top into queensland myself, even if it meant flying back and getting my bike shipped. That wouldn't be until at least mid year however, as I would need to accrue more leave.

I have taken a bit of a shine to the whole bike adventure thing since my Europe trip :D

Well, at the rate it is going now, and with a 2,500km trip across the Great Australian Bite to cover the next leg to get it to the next likely place for a GS rider to be, we may be waiting a small while  :icon_mrgreen:

I'm officially on Leave now, and my plans to go to Perth on the GS  :cookoo: have been progressing well.
So far so good, and plan to leave Adelaide on the 17th.

My continuing battle with Telstra (they've been sending my bills to a street address I lived at 14 years ago and wonder why I haven't been paying them) means I am again phoneless and internetless, but will try and jump online regularly.

I don't believe we've found anyone yet Iain, so unless otherwise informed I'll be bringing the baton back from Perth with me to Adelaide.
If someone knows someone in Perth to hand the baton on to for another leg, please PM me. Otherwise it's doing a round trip with me.

Hi Michael,
Unfortunately I have a tight Adelaide return deadline and I am already back at Pt Augusta.
At least we can post the baton now without it being "cheating".
Will post pics and the fully updated map in the next couple of days.

Looks like an awesome trip!  That 90 mile straight just sounds daunting!

Also, there's a pic for coda's 'ONLY IN AUSTRALIA' thread!  :icon_lol:

Let me know Golly. Happy to post it over to you.
I'd be so glad to see it taken on more of a jaunt over there than I could give it  :)

I never intended for it to be stuck with me for nearly a year... sorry guys...

What a shame it's all over here. Did it do a complete lap or did it stall? Lol

I got it across to Perth from Adelaide (and back again) and it's stalled a bit awaiting someone to take it on from Perth.

Oh well done , I seen the pics and they look great. Nice ride and set up. The Perth to the north would be tricky to find someone. Maybe once it reaches North Queensland I can take it south again , or north depending which way it's coming from hahah. Would you do it again or have you done similar BIG trips ?

Wonder how many memory cards the Ghost camera would need to do do a full lap around? ... That'd be a hell of a Vlog!  ;)

That was my first BIG trip on the GS. Would I do the trip again? Absolutely! Would I do it again Solo? Not bl--dy likely!
Great trip, great time of year, just lacked someone to share it with, but then again I had just been divorced and needed to get out and sort out my head after that ordeal (but that's another story).
I've been discussing doing it again with a mate, or at least the Border Run, and he's keen, so who knows...

I sure know "that " feeling! I dream one day to go on a big trip ... One day. I have just seen Charlie boorman release a trip http://www.compassexpeditions.com/tour/short-adventures/sydney-to-the-outback/

I don't have $6000 just do that hahahha

OK - this baton has been with me too long (probably my fault for not chasing it up  ), and now I have no ride  :icon_sad:

Where's it going and to whom?  :dunno_black:

Get in touch with pave_spectre. He's been waiting since the relay started. Maybe he and Golly could do some riding with it together.

I did the Nullarbor Run from Adelaide to Perth and back a while ago.
At the time there wasn't a GS'er in Perth to hand it to, and I've been trying to hand it on to someone in WA ever since.
I believe Pave is now in WA, but last time we communicated, his bike was off the road.

Any takers? Please PM me  :)
