OK, I am once again looking purchasing at a GS500E, this time an oldie from 1989 but it has the clip-ons. Id there a DIY guide on how to replace these with standard handlebars?

Those clip on's worth $$ LOL. That whole bike is minty - wait a sec - In boston area ?

OK so you can swap the top plate or if you're so inclined replace that chrome bolt set with
https://www.ebay.com/itm/112030792453?hash=item1a158e3b05:g:CbsAAOSwhdZabAfB (rememeber these are 100mm c/c spacing. If those are 100 mm these will fit, but if not, get the right spacing ... or individual ones like this -

Then use a dirt bike bar that's 1 1/8th in the center and 7/8th at the ends.

BTW I'd modify the riser by drilling it through, then drill from the top with a mill bit so the bolt head counter sinks however dont drill so deep that the bolt head drops in completely. The bolt should be only partially countersunk. Then grind a crescent in the top so the handlebar will keep it from rotating when tightening. Oh put a washer under bolt head too.

I know it sounds complicated - but really its not. I'll send you a pic if you decide to go this route.

Cool.

Sorry, not Boston (love Boston by the way and have family there), or even in the USA.  This one is in the Great White North.......Canada.

Get that.

Then that bottom bolt with the grommets, remove it with vice grips or by using locking nuts.

Then drill through the lower handlebar block. This is for safety. If you have that come loose, you will lose the bolt the way it currently is. Far more risky than if just the nut comes off. So run the bolt from the top.

Then counter sink that bolt head partially. Because there's no way to get a wrench on it when tightening because the handlebar will be in the way. This isn't neccesary because you can tighten it by eyeball ... but if the bolt head is held in place from rotating by the handlebar IMHO that's cool as duck.

Then grind a crescent in the bolt head. So the bar will sit in it and keep it from rotating. Maybe drill the bolt for a cotter pin and use a castle nut like stock so nothing will come off.

Its easy:

Step 1: Buy a handlebar top plate and handle bar for a 1990 - 2009 GS500 off eBay or similar

Step 2: Swap the top plate, install handlebar, and move all the switch gear over

Step 3: Sell the Clip-on top plate, risers, and bars for more than you spent on the replacement parts. 1989 was the only year to get clip ons in the US and Canada so they are a sought after item for anyone who wants to track their bike or a sportier look.

Basically you just need this part:

And a handlebar of your choice

Well, seller told me I am first in line and asks me to come see this Saturday afternoon. I just got a text telling me he sold the GS500E tonight. So frustrating when people do shaZam! like this.  :dunno_black:

I had agreed to pay $1,100 Canadian, but the seller decided to sell to someone else after we stuck that deal.
