If you're not a member of socalsportbikes.com JOIN.
I'm in for the intermediate group.

We had a great time out here at Buttonwillow yesterday! ('m currently posting sitting in a garage at BW -- the wireless internet here is working great).

I wanted to let everyone know that we're going to have another event here at Buttonwillow on October 20th -- $84 for members of SoCalSportbikes! (the list price is $99, using the discount code 'socal' on our website http://zoomzoomtrackdays.com to get the additional $15 discount.

It's "kinda" a regular day for us. We're initially posting a 3 group format but if it's like yesterday we'll cut it back to 2 groups (like we did yesterday). Top quality instruction is available in all groups! The Novice School/C group alternates between in-classroom sessions and on-track sessions. The B and A groups have instructors available on request!

The reason I say it's a "kinda" regular day is that we're also likely to be running an AFM New Racer School at this event, with many spots available. If you're interested in coming to the New Racer School (for $200) then just wait until Monday when we get it posted on the Zoom Zoom website.

I'll look forward to seeing you all there!

Chris.

I've been wanting to do a trackday, but I don't know if I'm ready yet.  I have a brand new set of powers on my bike and a 2piece suit but I'm still a little intimidated by the whole track idea.

Will there be a beginner friendly group?
Also I'm thinking of using the cracked fairings from my little incindent as race fairings...whatcha yall think?

do the trackday - you'll be hooked and won't look back  :thumb:

i've been fortunate to ride with a club that takes care of their members, i've heard stories (true or not) of how other clubs just kinda toss you out there and fend for yourself.

there's a novice riders school at no extra charge. check out their website. it may be worth it for you considering the overall cost and a great track. I've never done a trackday with them though. this will be a first.

OK, question for you trackdayers.  Everything I've read says you need to bring someone with you...  Is this a must have?  Being a thursday, I'm having a tough time getting someone to come with me.  I even offered to load their bike in my truck     (whether or not I can actually fit two bikes in my truck is another subject entirely lol.   Havent yet tried that one)

Anyway.... any definitive guidance on this?   :dunno:

hahaha, yeah, I saw that post of yours...

No, you dont need to bring someone. You'll have a few people there that you'll "know" and that will just add to the day. Its nice to have someone there to share the experience with, especially if they're riding the same group as you. Its a total blast. You wont be able to wipe the smile off your face until you realize you're hooked and start thinking about what to sell to pay for tires and trackdays....

If you're alone you can load the bike using the engine to roll the bike up the ramp and/or back the truck up to a driveway so the rear wheels are in the gutter, lowering the tailgate closer to the ground. that makes it easier too. I just run the engine and clutch it gently up the ramp in gear.
Title: $84 buttonwillow trackday! oct 20th
Post by: JCH on October 03, 2005, 01:02:45 PM
Heheheh...  Yeah....  loading bikes by myself terrifies me.

I was in a parking lot once, trying to load my old gs500 into the back of the truck.  I have one of those crummy black ramps with the holes you know?  Not very long.

So I'm clutching the bike up the ramp....  right as the back wheel is about to get onto the tailgate, it spins, kicks the ramp out from underneath it, and lands smack on the tailgate....  Luckily it fell straight and so it was perched there, bottom of the frame on tailgate, back tire hanging off the edge.  I had to hold it there for 5 minutes until some guy walked by and came over to help.     He must have thought I was a freaking moron.

That's why I don't load by myself  ;)   Maybe I just need a better ramp ;)
Title: $84 buttonwillow trackday! oct 20th
Post by: pantablo on October 03, 2005, 02:35:58 PM
or maybe you need to use a tie down and strap the ramp to the bumper or something. Thats what most people do to prevent that happening...you'll learn.

I learned that from the track regulars...it wouldnt have occured to me either. I have the same ramp, or I should say I borrow the same ramp from the people I borrow the truck from...I'm going to invest in a proper ramp.

Well I don't have leathers and I can't just buy some since nothing fits me. I guess an ultra baggy set would fit, but I would hate to waste so much money on something like that if it's not even going to fit properly.

I also noticed that they said you need health insurance, which I don't have. I gave up looking to see if there were anymore reqs. I don't meet.

Why don't things fit right?  Height?  Weight?

Custom's always an option... 850 from reflex gear.

I put together a two piece for much less (many thanks to pablo for his input).

What are your measurements?
Title: $84 buttonwillow trackday! oct 20th
Post by: leo on October 04, 2005, 02:40:06 PM
I'll look up that reflex gear. I looked into Vanson and Z Custom, but they are just way out of my price range. 850 is still up there, but I will look into them. I guess when I bought my Apline Stars jacket, I would buy the pants and be done, but in my haste I didn't try them on first like I should have.

Well the fit problems are because of my butt and thighs. They are huge compared to my waist. If I buy boxers the fit my waist, they boxers will tear because of my thighs. If the jeans fit my waist, they will not pull up past my ass. So I just where baggy jeans and I'm okay with it, but the leathers ended up being way too big around my waist and then still tight around my ass and legs.

Someone suggested getting a tailor, but that scares me. It seems like the integrety of the suit or pants will be severly compromised. Unless they work on racing suits for a living.

I'm actually planning on going to Berts and trying on even more brands. Maybe one brand will fit me better. I've only tried on a few different pairs down by me.
Title: $84 buttonwillow trackday! oct 20th
Post by: leo on October 04, 2005, 02:41:44 PM
oh my measurements are 38 waist, hip is 44 I think, and thigh is 26 or 27.
Title: $84 buttonwillow trackday! oct 20th
Post by: JCH on October 04, 2005, 02:45:21 PM
Afar as I know berts only has two sets of leather pants (the a* track and a* bat) but they do have lots of suits.  Actually, they may also have a joe rocket pant... not sure

If you can't find anything else, try finding something that fits your thighs and is the closest to your waist (while remaining big).   If it's big, it can always be tailored, professionally, by Zs, though they're not cheap.  But its definetely worth a call.

I dont know how much it is to pull in something like that, but worth an option.

Good luck!
Title: $84 buttonwillow trackday! oct 20th
Post by: leo on October 04, 2005, 02:52:14 PM
I never thought to have Z tailor something I bought from somewhere else. I would trust them to tailor it. The other issue is that since I have to get a bigger size, I would have to have them bring up the length as well as the knee stuff so it still lines up somewhat. I'm sure it would be cheaper in the long run since I already have the AStars jacket.

How much of a negative is a slightly baggy suit? I mean I'm on a GS and will be in the novic group.

And thanks for your help.

it does have garages but I dont know how to get one-probably need to call the organizer directly. I know they were about $100 for another trackday I did. Not bad if you split it with a few people.

I usually bring an EZup if its hot, otherwise I dont bring any kind of cover.

Plenty of parking trackside. when entering I like to park in the first lot, meaning the west side of the tower, instead of the east side, only because the entrance to the hot pit is there, as is the track exit.

Plenty of tailgate chillin happening, whether or not you got cover. Hopefully Will brings his ezup, that he and Dan brought last time.

leo,
if you go custom go Syed leathers. same $850 but better quality than reflex by a long shot. cheapest full custom suit you'll find. I've done the research and next time I get a wad of cash to throw at motorcycling it'll be for their suit.

http://www.syedleathers.com/

As far as off the shelf-good luck. your shape is going to be a problem. Joe rocket might work as might most american manufacturers. I've found that A-stars and most Euro makers tailer their products to the slimmer Euro body type, like mine.

Z can do custom tailoring but I'd contact them first to make sure what you buy is something they're willing to work with, and the cost. Might cost as much as having them make you something. also, Z isnt known for a quick turnaround. usually 6 weeks for alterations/repairs.

Do they appear to be nearly new, not close to the wear bars? if so you're fine. If not, they might overlook them as long as they dont look shagged. I havent noticed them really inspecting my tires carefully but that doesnt mean they gave them the quick once-over to make sure they look alright.

Don't by any means take my word as that of an expert... I'm just somewhat well versed since I obsess over every purchase I make, and I just made this one.....  BUT...

Apparently slightly baggy is ok.  not BAGGY as in jeans baggy... but baggy as in there's a little bit of extra material you can pinch when in the riding position.   Also.... if you're worried about the leather knee armor being too low.... try sitting on a  bike with them on... believe me, it makes a huge difference.

Oh, and everything pablo said ;)

Good luck :)

Oh yeah thanks Pablo. I forgot that I had also looked into them briefly, but I will do so more now. Good point about the American vs European manufactures. Here's hoping the Joe Rocket has something for me. :)

JCH. True :) I just figured my speeds will be lower and I doubt I would ever really get to 100 (and the average would be really low), but I'm just assuming since I've never been.

Cool! Dont forget to tape the wheel weights. pull the headlight plug out in advance...actually its pretty easy to do so we can do that at the track if we have to.

Quote from: my_celica_is_jealousquestion again  ...is a full tank + 2 gal jug good enough for the day?!

Probably, depending on how hard you ride and how much you ride. First time I went to BW I only got through my bike's full tank. Next time I went through that and had to borrow half a 6ga jug. last time I went, it was 1 full tank+1 complete 6ga (or are they 7ga?) jug. I'll have some to spare as will others around there if necessary. Worse case, bring a credit card and buy some VP race gas for $5/ga.

Since the GS doesnt have a fuel gauge you'll have to be diligent with the fuel to prevent running out of gas on the track (it happens though), given that you'll likely be getting less mpg at the higher rpms the track demands.

short answer-yes, you'll be alright.

J-
whatever you do, spend the extra money on a 5ga jug, like the dirt bikers use. thats what you'll see at the track.

like this but usually clear or white (and round, this just happens to be the only photo I could pull quickly):
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.motorcycle-superstore.com%2Fphotos%2F300%2Fi6506.jpg&hash=7748eb62eb5a3955d56ab78d08f9d3603ed5fec4)

Expect to pay $25-$30 for one. Dont buy the cheapy auto parts store one. they take too long to fill the tank and are generally more cumbersome to use.

it wont be so much the next time, and each time thereafter.

I have to swap the bodywork over, tape the rear turn signals, remove license...everything else is already done-water wetter you only need to do once (or once a year), wheel weights are permanently taped, and I'm getting more and more lazy such that only the absolutely necessary street bodywork gets put back on-front upper/headlight and tail (w/taillight)...all the other track bodywork remains...
Title: $84 buttonwillow trackday! oct 20th
Post by: JCH on October 13, 2005, 09:54:43 AM
I can easily imagine that being the case... I think most the time involvement will come from acquiring all the little things I don't have. (Painter's tape, duct tape, water wetter, etc)   As for the body work....

I have kind of been wondering what my future holds for me in terms of my next bike..... if I really like track days maybe it makes sense to sell the one I have and get something that's less cosmetically perfect where I can easily swap out bodywork etc...  I can also see why people buy salvage bikes for the track... not quite as much to worry about.

Anyway most of my concern comes from the little logistical things (waking up at 5am, loading the bike, packing all the food, finding people I know at the event)   Boy, can you guys tell I'm type A yet?

im actually wanna bay a track only bike next time...you know no insurance (maybe theft)...no registration...doesnt need to be pretty...goes wicked fast in a relatively safe environment... and just use the GS on the street   ...

also pablo...abc7 news said itll be sunny hot d' 19,20,21   ...dunno if that includes BW

stop yer bitchin. both of you. you're making the initial investment. the next trackdays are going to be consumables only, and cost of the trackday. not the other preparation stuff.

once you're done with the trackday you'll be willing to pay 2x that to do it again.

yay! weather looks good at BW.

hahaha, I dont even bother with painters tape. I've yet to have "residue" from the duct tape on any of my lights, even when I used to run headlights. There's currently duct tape on my side fairings, ram air covers, rear turn signals, wheel weights....

dont bother with painters tape. the only time its really an issue is the heat of summer. Since your headlights will be unplugged they wont be heating the tape up.

painters tape...

Information that would have been useful 4 hours ago BEFORE i went to home depot  ;)

You use duct tape?  Hrmm.   Well I bought both, and a slew of other things I thought were fun.  Have some ratchet ties on the way.  I'm havin fun ;)   Goin to cycle gear on sat, hopefully i'll knock the rest of my initial investment off the list ;)

colored duct tape-remember to be color coordinated. I suggest green with the copper. actually red might look alright. I have red and black duct tape....for obvious reasons.

ratchet ties? is that what you call zip ties? yeah, bring those too. I got them in black and in clear. long ones too.

ratchet tie downs :)

Color coordinated duct tape?   Black would be cool.  Wish I had thought of that.  Silver would prolly be fine on my bike though ;)

I got tons of zip ties.  do you need some?

Jonah, the plug for the headlights should be REALLY accessible, even behind the fairing. you should be able to see a plug on the back of the headlight unit that has a couple wires running to it, and pull it off. No fairing removal necessary. Thats how it SHOULD be anyway...

Anyone have a room in their gas can for my gas?     I didn't get a chance to make it out to a shop (well I did, but it would have been difficult mounting it on my bike :) )

In other news, got the final confirmation :-D  Brought up a couple questions....

Pablo where do you plan on pitting?  If you don't mind, I'd like to be in the same general area as you are.   I assume same goes for celica (whats your real name dude?)   Also, what time do you plan on leaving / getting there?

I have all the other information I need in a printed packet   :thumb:   Just need to go to the grocery store to pick some stuff up....  anyone want me to pick something up for them? (Save you the trip?)

a friend has a spaRe (edited for spelling) fuel can. I'll bring it and fill it up when I fill mine up. Bring some cash. I'll fill it up with $20 or less of gas. that should be about one tank full (at $3/ga).

I usually try to pit in the area indicated by red ellipse. west paddock area, park nearest the track but on the grass side (grass between rows of parking.

(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv505%2Fpantablo%2Frace_13_config.gif&hash=be79e0186c5ceb34f9dfc4c8eff171191aff3826)

After you come over the grapevine make sure you do NOT get on the 99fwy. You have to take the off ramp to stay on the 5! I usually stop around there for refuelling and pee break. After the 5/99 split you stay on the 5 for another 30 minutes or so. Cant remember exactly. You pass the town of Buttonwillow, then get off at Lerdo Hwy. Turn left. First driveway on left is entry to buttonwillow (sign is small). pull up and check in (there's a chair and stop sign in the road where you need to stop to sign in. they come out to the car to sign you in and give you a wristband. then continue straight until the bathrooms, then a quick left-right puts you on the front row of the parking area (red ellipse on map). I try to get parking there because the track exit is just before Sunset and the track entry is right around the ellipse too.

I'll probably be getting there around 7:45-8am
remember to bring lunch.

look for this truck:

I was hoping I could come down on Thursday and at least meet you guys.
Instead I came down Friday and setup my pit in virtually the same spot you had. Saturday was practice for the AFM race, with the final race of the season on Sunday. I was fighting for 3rd in the race when I screwed up went off on the final corner leading onto the straight. (final corner before the checkered flag!!! :x  :x )
Well thanks to my flattrack experience I kept it together and got back onto the track and finished 4th. But that was more than enough to clinch the 500 twins title
It was a hard fought season against a few SV 500s and the usual Kawi Ninjas.
But the mighty GSZILLA prevailed :)
I'm going into semi-retirement, so I hope to be able to do more track days.
Next time you guys do something, let me know.  :thumb:

Thanks Bob and JC.

Bob, I highly recommend Club Desmo. Time before last I was at buttonwillow it was with them. They ran the same 2 bike/1 car sessions. I was running in the A/B+ group then I'd come in, go straight down the hot pit and do the B-/C group sessions-almost all day I was running 40 minute sessions!

That day they also ran the course in reverse and that was awesome. gave me insight into the lines a little more and it seemed to flow better. they also ran the Star Mazda turn which ROCKS.

have fun. I'm jealous.

Here's another one from the first session of the 20th:
