Title: We'll miss you dearly Rich (Phaedrus) - UPDATED 7-02 PM!!
Post by: weaselnoze on July 01, 2006, 05:55:18 PM
i dont know where to begin guys. i've never had to do this before.  i was at the pool this afternoon with a friend of mine when my fone rang.  it was rich's number.  of course i answered with a 'hey buddy', but soon learned it was his fiance.  right away i knew something was up.  she started off saying she had some terrible news.  rich went out this morning on a ride and was killed in a serious accident.  i dont know many details other than there was serious head trauma.  she asked that i share this with everyone and also to let everyone know a funeral is in the works and is expected to be in the next few days.  we are all welcome to go. i just ask that everyone keeps his family and fiance in their prayers and ride safe. he was a well known guy around here and made a huge impact on our community.  he was nice to EVERYONE, very informative, and just a great guy all around.  we'll all miss him terribly.

i'll keep everyone posted with details as they emerge so dont worry. JOHN, could you please make this a sticky?

UPDATE (morning of 7-02-06)

amanda spoke with rich's fiance (kim) this morning.  i will prob talk with her again soon today.  right now the viewing is gonna be on thursday the 6th and the funeral on the 7th.   it will be somewhere in norwich (sp), NY.  we dont know where yet. that will be decided soon and i'll let everyone know.  also kim wanted us to change our plans up a lil.  they used to do toys for tots or something like that, so she would appreciate if we dontated the money there. i'll get more specific details.  i still think we need to do flowers in addition.

as for what happened with the accident..  amanda spoke with kim this morning and relayed this to me.   according to kim,  he was out on a morning ride when he came to a curve in the road.  it just so happened that as he was in the turn, another motorcylce coming from the opposite direction, crossed the yellow line and hit rich's bike head on.   the other person involved in the accident is in the hospital right now as we speak.  i dont know details on his condition.   from what i understand, Rich died at the scene.

UPDATE - 7-02 PM

i just spoke with kim a few minutes ago. she is very appreciative of what is happening on the board with the memorial rides and donations etc.  view and funeral information is as follows:

both will be held at Fayhef Funeral Home in Norwich, NY.  its on the corner of Rexford St and Broad St.  the viewing will be on Thursday July 6th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm.  The funeral will be held on July 7th at 11am.

We were just with him this weekend...I spoke to him on the phone two days ago.  Rich was the nicest guy.  I can't believe this...

Melissa and Julie, I wanted to tell you personally b/c I know you had plans to see him, but I couldn't get to you soon enough.  I'm sorry.

We need to send flowers from all of us, maybe John can help out with that.

Me too, Scratch.  It was the hardest thing to get this news on the phone AS I was reading his last post about grammar correction.  It made it even more unreal.  Then seeing people respond to him not knowing what had happened....

weaselnoze: thank you so much for letting us know.

Rich was one of my first friends on this board...many of you know we were planning a ride in July...I think perhaps we should do a memorial ride each year in his memory...after AJ's accident he very nicely told me to get my butt back on the bike. I think he'd want it that way. He was a good guy and he will be missed. Prayers for Rich, Kim, and his family.

I feel like the biggest @$$hole on earth right now. Rich was a great guy. Always ready to help out the noobs, he put together that whole damn FAQ site... Always answered any question anyone had, no matter how many times it had been asked.. never smacked anyone with the "search n00b!".. I can't even express what I'm feeling right now.. he was also one of my first friends on this board.. we talked on AIM about everything from the GS to women to God only knows what... I'll miss him, a lot. My prayers are with him and his fiancee. If someone who has his address could PM it to me, I'll see what I can do about getting some flowers delivered, I have a friend who's a florist, and always does great arrangements for me. I'd looked forward to riding with Rich someday, or at least meeting him.

Wow. This is the first time I've cried in years. Rich, we'll miss you buddy...

Man, I gotto tell you, I'm pretty shook up.  I just got off the phone a while ago with Weaze about the bad news.  I havent been on this forum that long.  I've had a few IM's with Rich and spent only a several hours with him at the PA get together and a couple of phone calls.  Yet I feel that a best friend has died.  My impressions of Rich was that he was someone that was very open, kind, and caring.  He had a sense of being really in tuned with the HERE and NOW.  He gave full attention of what you were saying.   He could easily be anyones Best Friend.  How often do you run across someone so kind?  God bless his family and fiance.  Rich, I hope that you are in a better place.

most sincerely

Chris

I can't believe a week ago I was riding and eating and drinking and having a great time with him... it's just nuts...  oh man I don't know what else to say but Rich was a truly awesome guy and I'm really glad I had the chance to meet him.  I feel so sorry for his family and fiance, this must be really hard on them, I wish them my best.

Fare Well Rich.
You shared your thoughts, your knowledge, and your jokes.  But most importantly, you shared your kindness.  I sincerely hope you are in a better place.

To all family & friends (including friends on this forum):
This is sudden, and in the face of sadness, it seems like there is nothing else in the world except what has happened.  I didn't know Rich personally, but I am crying as I write this .  That really says something about how Rich affected people.

Please send Rich, his family, and his friends prayers to get through this horrible time.  The grief & sadness will always be there (and years to come).

It hurts when we lose someone from the motorcycling community, be it someone we know or someone who just happens to ride. It hurts even more when its someone who is family.

Phaedrus, you will be much missed. Rest in peace brother and let endless perfect curvy roads lead you to the peace that motorcycling brought to you.

Weasel.  PM me the details (funeral home where he's going to be waked).  We'll send some flowers.  Anybody wants to chip in just paypal some money on the donation page and make sure you put it's for  Rich (Phaedrus).

We'll try to send a nice big bunch of flowers so the family knows he was well thought of by us all.  The card will read something like "We'll miss you dearly -from all of your friends at GStwin"

It always seems so unfair when someone is taken from us. Hopefully, knowing that we all cared so deeply for him will make it easier for his family and friends-all of us included-to heal.

Without more details it doesnt feel true or seem to hit home. I never really talked with him much but I was looking at some of the pics from the recent trip some of ya'll did and it is a gut check. I think about what if something had happened to one of my boys that went on the Deals Gap trip recently and really hits hard to think of one of these people I rode along side, shared a laugh with and a great time. What if one of them were gone.

Its funny how we can miss someone we've never really met. I dont know Rich at all, I've never met him in person, or even talked to him online. All I know of him are a few sentences here and there from a motorcycle forum and some pictures of a nice looking guy with a smile on his face and thats all I need.  A few pictures of a young happy guy and the thought he is no longer with us is all I need to break my heart. Ride safe.

I really dont know what to say, guys. I was already to say something inappropiate in the TF and see Phae's pic at the top of the page and wonder. I read on and realize that we have lost another member of the GS community. What in the world? He just responded on a few threads that I responded to- always saying something informative and lifting the spirts of even the most negative members or .........derrogative(whichever the case may be)
I can't say amything bad about this guy...
Me being.....without....a demonatation(preferences of religion)....hoping that Rich finds his place in the Circle of Life.... and others can learn from lifes many leasons and teach all
Rich...I did not know you...but your insite(sp) will surely be misse around here and hopefylly we can keep representing your views to the fullest...
Everyone raise what you have......

I am very sorry to here this, I just lost my brother 3 weeks ago in a bike accident, the pain of loosing somone esp your brother is unimagineable and if I can take it I believe just about anyone can. RIP.

The way we did it was not take his death or funeral as the crappyness (cant think of a better word as tired as I am, sorry) of loosing him and him dieing but a celebration of his live and what he brought to this world...

My post on another thread:

I opened to read the forum to find out abt Rich and couldn't believe it.  I read the threads with tears in my eyes & having a difficult time typing.  I just made my donation.  My heart goes out to his family, fiancee, friends (including the ones here at GSTwins).  I didn't know him personally but he came off to me as a very smart and friendly person from reading his threads.  When I got to this forum fairly new, he was the one who noticed I was from NJ, mentioned Suzuki10 and others who might live close to me and invited me to the campsite.  I wish I would hv went.  I am so emotional right now because I know how his love ones are shocked and hurting.  We should all do a ride in his honor/memory.  PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYTHING LIKE DOES HAPPEN.  Weasel or Suzuki10, I would like to make an additional charity contribution to Toys for Tots in his honor, pls PM w/ an address wherein I can send a card.  I am so sorry everyone...my thoughts and prayers and my heartfelt love goes to all of you who was a very big part of his life...

I, like many others, didn't know Rich personally, but that never stopped him from helping me out. He was always willing to lend a hand to a noob, and his sense of humor was fantastic. He lived close to my college, and I was hoping to try to get together with him for a ride sometime (after I learned ;) ). I guess that ride isn't going to happen, and I feel a terrible sense of longing that I never got to know him better. We'll miss you Rich.

 I have only been on the forum about a week now, but am still sad..  Phaedrus made me feel very welcomed to the forum with his kind messages to me, sad that he is now gone.  Prayers to him, his family and friends...  Uncluding his family here on.

Please everyone ride cautiously, the scary thing is most of the time it's not the riders fault

Oh my. I have absolutely no idea what to say. Never knew him personally, but he was always nice to me whenever I needed help with something. This is just an absolutely devastating lost. My thoughts are with him and his family.

I'm a little sad...he was mine and kalee's friend, and he spoke to Kalee regularly and he helped us out a lot with PacNet (http://www.photoartclub.net/forums).  though not like a bunch of bosom buddies, we knew enough about one another that our real names were known and used instead of our online aliases, we knew when Rich was getting married and we knew birthdays and all sorts of other stuff...close enough that the void he used to feel will always tug at us.  I don't know how to really contribute to this thread, though, without lying to myself or any of you.  I am sad, but I want to tell you all how tragic I think this is...but the man died doing something he loved.  I should be so lucky...and jealous.  The only tragedy is that he went so young...before he had a chance to live up to life's potential.  I want to share how sorry I feel for all of us here, and his family at home...but, truth is, we were lucky we experienced him.  He was clever and artistic, eager to help those of us who needed it.  He was happy to be friendly with everyone.  I only feel sorry for the people who never had the opportunity to know or experience him.  And so, since all I can really say is that I'll miss him, I can't say much...I just can't bring myself mourne him.  But I'll celebrate him.

UPDATE (morning of 7-02-06)

as for what happened with the accident.. amanda spoke with kim this morning and relayed this to me. according to kim, he was out on a morning ride when he came to a curve in the road. it just so happened that as he was in the turn, another motorcylce coming from the opposite direction, crossed the yellow line and hit rich's bike head on. the other person involved in the accident is in the hospital right now as we speak. i dont know details on his condition. from what i understand, Rich died at the scene.

this makes it all the more shitty. unreal.

You never know the effect someone has on the community until that person is gone.

Like many I didn't know Rich outside of this forum, but he showed enough of himself in words and actions to expose the kind of interested, caring, and helpful person we always want to meet when entering uncharted waters of an experience like motorcycling.

It's so sad and unfortunate that he was here for such a short time, but we're all a little bit better off for knowing Rich, each in our own experience.  Even in the circumstances of his passing there is something to learn -- to be ever vigilant in this risky sport we all have an interest in.

Take care, one and all.  Condolences to all who knew him personally, especially family and loved ones...

Oh, and thanks for the picture collage (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=28071.msg299641#msg299641), Mac.  Nice tribute.

I can't believe this?!  Phaedrus was such a nice guy...and a hard worker for this site (FAQ).

He always helped me with my questions when I was a NOOB.

He died of head trauma?  Does anyone know if he was wearing his helmet?

I also have not been by the forum for quite some time.  My brother, JustinNoob alerted me to what has happened, and I had to stop by to give my condolences.  Rich was definitely a great guy and very friendly, he also did alot for the motorcycling community.

It always hurts me to hear these things, but it is a very sobering reminder of how dangerous this sport is.

Ride safe.

You know I've been thinking about this all day.   It just seems fake,   I dont know,  it just doesnt seem real.  I mean one second me and phae were beating up on NGFL, about his grammar nazi habits.  And then i read this post.   I honestly thought this was some sort of sick sick joke.

I dont know, I just thought there would be some sort of Good bye speech, or some like momentous post.  I miss this guy and I barely knew him.  Whats wrong with me.    I didnt cry or anything, but I actually feel a huge scence of loss.

The strange this is, he looks alot like me, minus the sunglasses, and I think thats what hits home.  I dont know if thats selfish or anything, but its like, what if my fiancee lost me so quickly, with out a long kiss, or a tender hug.  I would be so angry with my self for not being able to say good bye perfectly.  How she must feel, probably second guessing her last words, the regret.  Damn it miss this guy like he was a brother, and I feel so much sorrow for his Mom, Dad, Fiancee.

I miss you Rich.

Hi everyone,

I wanted to give an address because I know some of you asked for one.  My address is Kim Cox, 57 West Main St., Bainbridge, Ny 13733.  I am giving this address out because it is the best to be reached.  My email address is kimberlymae028@yahoo.com (only because I am not too familar with this site)

Weaselnose thank you for all your help!

Rich's family is taking this extremlly hard but they are safe. This whole thing has not hit me yet but I'm sure it will. Rich was everything to me, the love of my life and my soul mate, I will never be the same. There are no words that can express the way I feel.

Everyone ... please drive safe

What do you say?  ~  What now?  ~  Why?  ~  It could have been me or any of us.

My personal apology to Kim.  I am so very sorry.  Our decision to ride is selfish.  It makes no logical sense to risk our lives and hurt our friends and loved ones.  However, It's what we love.  It's who we are.  It's our spirit.

To all of his many friends- may his memory and spirit always be with you.

I am utterly speechless. I can't even begin to express how sad I am about this whole situation. This is a truly sad day, especially to lose such a great guy.

It always makes me sick to my stomach hearing about these things, but even more so when it's someone I've had conversations with and have gotten to know even a little bit. I was really hoping to get to meet Rich one day at a rally and be able to talk with him face to face. He is really a great guy and should be celebrated for who he is, I'm sure he would want it that way. He was nothing but kind and supportive to everyone on this board.

It's so hard to think about this, it truly makes me feel nauseus. It's just so much...

Rest in peace, Rich. You'll be missed.

Although I don't think Rich ever mentioned it directly, his handle most likely come from the book "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" by Robert Prisig.  Here's a hint (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=14667.30).  Phaedrus was the alter ego of Prisig when he was in a philosophical and psychological battle with his professor, a story told through recollection as Prisig was on a motorcycle trip with his young son and a couple of friends through the US.  It was a book that also put into me the longing to ride.  The preface goes something like this: This book is not about Zen Buddhism, neither is it very factual on motrocycle maintenance.  But in actuality, it is extremely relevant to both, without saying much about either.  I can't explain it very well here, but it is an inspiring book.  Took US by storm went it came out in 1974 (I think it was 1974).  I don't read many books more than once in my life, maybe two.  ZAMM is one of them.

If you ever get a chance to read the book, you will feel as if you were on the same mountain top, breathing the thin cool mountain air, walking over the faint trail that Rich must have walked through.

See you around, Phaedrus.  It is about Quality.  And you have tons.

I didn't know Rich other than reading and posting on occasion with him and receiving a pm concerning the PA camping trip. I could tell with the little I knew he was a great person.

Lord I hope you enjoy Rich as much as it seems we all did, you got a good one there.

Ride safe brothers and sisters.

Man this is sad to hear. I haven't been on the site for about 2 weeks and I come back to see this. My prayers are out to all those who knew him. This is like an extended family. THough I have never met more than 3 of yall, I still feel that sense of loss. Goodbye Phae.

I guess I am like so many other people on here when I say that he sent me a PM about the PA ride a few weeks ago. We talked a few times through PM's about doing a group ride again later in the summer since I couldn't go on the June 23-25th ride.  It is weird to me to read this news about a guy I never met, but yet I have thought about it so much the last 24 hrs since I found out. I can only try to imagine how his parents feel to lose a 25 year old kid. Everyday for the last 2-3/4 years I have prayed in some capacity that I leave this world before my little girl. I can not even imagine going on with out her. Wether she's 5 or 25 I can't even begin to imagine the pain.  Stuff like this just puts it all back into perspective. I would love to do an annual ride that ended up in his home town, wether I am riding a GS or a Harley or whatever I would like to participate. I am off labor day weekend so let's start planning it and make it happen.

Is anyone else planning on attending Rich's service? I'm planning on taking I-90 out and meeting a mutal friend Rich and I shared before the service. I know its a long distance and during the week for many people, so attendance isn't an option. It'd be nice to know if others are planning on it though. Also, does anyone know how to get ahold of Insulinboy? Rich had mentioned riding with him several times but he hasn't been on the board in a while and I haven't seen him on AIM.

...what if my fiancee lost me so quickly, with out a long kiss, or a tender hug.  I would be so angry with my self for not being able to say good bye perfectly.  How she must feel, probably second guessing her last words, the regret.

that is why you should live your life without regret, like every day is your last. I've had several people close to me die in recent years and each one has brought me closer to this way of life. I fall victim to the everyday grubbiness that robs you of seeing what is really important but I struggle to live my life so that if I pass, my closest family and friends will know I love them. Its about being genuine, I think. Its all you can do, really.

Normally the wake or "calling hours" on Thursday if for friends and others to express their sympathy.  That's why flowers have to be there before the wake.  But nowadays it's sort of a free-for-all.  Attending the funeral service is totally acceptable -often less chance to speak with brothers & sisters and parents but a show of support none-the-less.

Go to one, go to both.  Really doesn't matter.  Going is the most important.  I was told by a local that this is expected to be a HUGE event -way I heard it there will be a huge turnout.

Keep the shiney side up.  God bless!  And Rich, here's one for the trip home...

Again I have to thank you all for your support. There will be a huge turnout for Rich's calling hours and funeral. If he were here to see how many people cared about him he would be amazed. He was a special guy, I just wish others could have had the chance to get to know him like I knew him. He was my everything and always will be! Please keep his memories alive. He was so excited about his bike and had a great time on the last ride to PA. As soon as he got home he couldnt wait to show me pictures and tell me all the funny stories about the trip.

PLEASE contact me with any wonderful stories I might want to know. I just want to keep him alive in my heart....and I'm only trying to find the way to ease this undiscribable pain.

I always rolled my eyes when Rich would go on his "bike site" (as he called it). Now I can see why he was so interested in this site. I dont knwo mcuh about bikes but I can definitely see the friendships he has made with such wonderful people!

Thank you all so very much!

I just found out this morning. Words cannot convey the thoughts and feelings brought on by Phae's passing.
I remember Phaedrus, although only through his posts here on the site. I remember that he had a true wit and a genuine heart.
I am awed by how many lives it seems he has touched.  I offer my condolences to the family.

Being an agnostic, I am unsure of what lies ahead of us, but I like to think we are all watched over by those who have touched our lives. Since I am unable to attend the funeral or any of the memorial rides, I will ride today in Phae's Memory. I could sure use the company.

Rich, I wish you a peaceful rest, you will be missed.  Watch over us.  GStwin will never be the same without you.

Kim, may God bless and comfort you and Rich's family.

I haven't looked in on GStwin for a week or so since I ride the dreaded Harley now. This is certainly not what I expected to find on the forum. The world can change in an instant, can't it. While motorcycling is inherintly very dangerous, no one gets out of life alive, and everyone is a vicitm of chance whether they ride or not. At least Rich was doing what he enjoyed when it was his time to depart and he didn't have to linger in suffering as many do. Godspeed Rich.

Hey guys. My name is Sarah. I am Kim's youngest sister. Rich was my brother in-law, I miss him dearly. All of us do.

The things you guys have said on here, touch me deeply. I am sure wherever Rich is, he is reading this and he knows everyone loves him. He was the sweetest most caring guy I have ever met.

Like my sister said, keep the memories going :) That is what everyone needs. We all need a little pick-me-up here and there. That is what Rich did for everyone. His sweet smile could get anyone else to smile. He had a great sense of humor.

Feel free to contact me if you would like.

I've been really uncomfortable while riding lately and I don't feel as stable or confident as I did last week. I find that I don't have the same control over my bike and am constantly worrying about traffic, making the right turn, keeping my eyes where they should be... It's messed up ... I, have thought about hanging up the jacket for good after what happened to Rich and that Dole Pineapple fellow. It's too much, and these paranoid feelings suck.

I think it's natural to be a little off our game when we have bad/shocking news. I waited to ride until I was past the initial shock, but I am keeping an even closer eye on traffic, and I'm slowing down a little and using extra caution. There's nothing wrong with letting this tragedy give us extra focus on our riding, on our safety, and on the dangers that are out there. It's actually good to become MORE aware. Slow down, be aware, and be careful out there.  :kiss3:

I thought about it too..until i thought about a conversation I had with Rich after AJ's accident. We talked about it for a long time about how much she scared me and how worried I was and didn't want anything to happen to her. Rich convinced me that I just needed to get my butt back on the bike. I love riding, Rich loved riding, he knew what the joys of riding were and how much they can help lift your spirits. I have not gotten back on my bike since last saturday, I know I am not ready I'm still grieving as many of us are, but I'm getting closer. Rich is looking out for us just like he always did. Don't let it put you off, just give it some time.

+1 I dont think Rich would want to be the reason that any of us stoped riding.. admitedly.. Ive given it some thought too.. I ride much MUCH more dangerously than Rich ever did.. I go faster than I should some times.. not over my own head.. but Ive tried to knee down on more than one occasion on the street.. Knowing that somthing like this happend to someone that did everything right is kind of scary.. but in the end.. as bad as it sounds.. somthing is eventualy going to kill you.. in our short time here.. we might as well do everything we can to enjoy it.. because if we dont enjoy it.. what was the point? I love riding too much to ever stop. I think its a good thing I lost my bikes in the flooding up north.. because my head isnt in the right place to ride right now (I was offered a bike so I could attned riches funeral as Im out in TN with no transportation right now.. but I declined) I think Id be too much of a danger to ride right now to myself and others.. as all Id be able to think about is "what if somebody comes at me around this next turn" not that its bad.. you always need to have an escape plan.. in case somthing like this does happen.. but if its all you think about it could easily get you hurt

I just got home from being out of town all week last night.  When I logged on to the site I thought, Whys Rich's mug up here? Then in the next split second when my eyes read the text, it felt like someone threw a bag of cement at my chest.

I read what had happened this week last night, and haven't really been able to post until now.  I don't think I can add a whole lot to what has already been said about Rich.  I only met Rich twice, but it only took that long to feel completely comfortable around him.  The other weekend at the NE Meet I had the opportunity to talk with him and have a good time.  It didn't take long to see that he was the type of guy that would drop everything and give you the shirt off his back if you needed help.  He was simply an all around great guy.

My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.  He will be sorely missed.

As i mentioned before, i just met Rich in person for the first time at the NE meet. It was weird feeling the way i did when i heard the news. I was really upset. luckly i was in upstate NY away from my bike all weekend, so i couldnt ride.  But,... when i got back, I slapped on my GSTwins sticker that Rich himself gave me at the meet, and went out for a ride.  I took another long ride thru the mountains and amish area with my fiance last night. Alot of times the same things ran thry my head. Escape routes, horror stories, etc.  But i took the ride real slow and started to enjoy it.  Over this past week, ive been more cautious and weery.  But slowing things down abit is nice too.

And i like to tell myself that by putting the sticker on my bike rich gave me, he went along for the ride too!

I was afraid to ride after I got the news on Saturday, but since I rode to work I really didnt have a choice but to ride home.  I talked to Pandy about it and she basically just said to take it slow at first and have confidence.  It started slow at first and then I let her rip a little and all of the fear was gone.  Rich would never have wanted anyone to quit riding because of something that happened to him, he loved it way too much.  My and Pandy's advice to all start slow, have confidence and then let it rip.

My and Pandy's advice to all start slow, have confidence and then let it rip.

Hey now..let it rip slowly and carefully! ;)

I agree that Rich wouldn't want anyone to give up riding due to his tragedy. Just be careful out there. Ride again when you're ready to, not before. Listen to the little voices in your head; they tend to keep us safer.

Well I ride like a grandma so let it rip has a different meaning entirely.

I was out of town on a camping trip over the last weekend.  Ironically, I was having a great time, celebrating my birthday on July 1, which I almost feel guilty about now knowing this happened that day, the day that so many people were at the start of their difficult time.

I'm very sad to have heard this news.  I never knew Rich directly, but in my time here doing countless searches on different topics, I've run into dialogue from Rich here and there.  I agree with everyone's sentiments about the kind of person Rich must have been.  Seemed like a kind soul and a great addition to anyone's circles.  My deepest sympathy to his fiancé, family and friends.  I wish you guys all the best through this.  Remember to celebrate his life and learn from our experiences with him.  It's one of the greatest homage’s one can do for another, I feel.

For Kim and Sarah (and anyone else who might not be familiar) – here is a link to Rich’s posts from newest to oldest, going back to Aug 04

http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?action=profile;u=2232;sa=showPosts

It’s a nice way to get some insight into Rich’s perspective on a bunch of different things.

Take care.

I still get a lump in my throat when I read this thread.  Squirted between two cars this morning, it was fun, got my rush for the commute, going faster than I usually go...not wontonly, just happened.

Hi Everybody, I am Kim's Aunt Anne.  I was sent this site and read everyone of your messages. I want to thank you all for your sincere words and look forward to meeting some of you tomorrow.  I know you have helped Kim in more ways then you know. She is so heart broken along with the rest of his family and has found an outpouring of love from you, his friends. He will live on in all of your hearts.   Some people live long  lives and don't have the love and friendship Rich found with all of you.  It is a truly fine tribute to him and you!!!  Be safe!   Thank you again.

Yep, wellwishes!  And, welcome!

He who comes here will find a freind, maybe a family, to go riding with, to share a passion.
The freind, and maybe the 'new' family, will get to know him, get to go riding with him, share his passion, for life, for enjoying life.
We ride, we all ride, we all share a passion...
That that passion may not die, but fulfill us as human beings, joined by a mutual feeling,
A mere feeling, a great feeling, that a few words can only describe facets of:
Rebellion, power, independance, thrill and excitement, but most of all freedom.

+1 for sure.  I'm glad that you can get a feel for how much Rich impacted this site and the people.  We're sending off a card to Kim & Virginia tomorrow with all our names.  Maybe she'll get a small feel for just how many people thought he was a good kid and will miss him.

I hope the family realizes just how many people were touched by Rich.  More than they probably imagined.

Rich had a wonderful sense of humour, and he would have laughed at your joke. Who says boys don't cry? We all cry... it's good for us, and it's cathartic... and eventually we'll be able to smile without the tears in our eyes.

Wow.  I didn't know  Rich, and haven't been on the boards too much lately, but did read quite a few of his helpful posts.   I am truly saddened to hear of his accident.   He was only a year younger than I am, and I am certain that he was a skilled, careful rider.  As such, his death is very, very sobering.

I always back off when I feel at risk when riding, I always wear gear, and I always ride as if I were invisible.  Also- and this might seem grim, to some,  but every couple of weeks, I will search through the recent news items for motorcycle accidents in the Atlanta area and elsewhere.  I sort of make a mental catalogue and a mental image bank of what went wrong: road conditions, rider and surrounding driving behavior, time of day, etc.  Doing so helps me cultivate a constant vigilance while on the road (a justifiable paranoia, at times- and I think all  those who ride know what I mean), and a respectful awareness of my own mortality.

Even so, Rich's accident is just a reminder of how what we do is just incredibly risky.  There are always going to be elements that are beyond our control.   At times, they keep me from riding (late at night, when it's pouring rain or just started to rain, or simply when I  sense that conditions aren't quite right for riding.)  Of course, even when I do make the decision to ride, these conditions will still exist.   I'm not an overtly religious Bible-thumpe or a zealot of any sort, but I do consider myself a person of faith.  So, after I have prepared to ride, rather than worrying about all of the possible "what if" situations,  or letting them keep me from riding,  I will now be saying a prayer every time before I ride:

"Lord, please give me the judgment, fear, and respect I need to ride safely today- and may those around me do the same.  Amen."

It's certainly not a long prayer- but it needn't be. Prayer (or anything else, for that matter) is no substitute for judgment, proper gear, good bike maintenance, practicing quick stops and swerves- all of the many things that go into being a good, responsible rider.  Having said that,  this prayer puts my mind at peace from all of the "what ifs" that might otherwise cloud my thinking during a ride.

Now, Rich and his family- Kim, Tazz, and everyone else- will be in my thoughts and prayers.  I will check the board over the weeks ahead to see how we can honor Rich's legacy, and do our best to foster good habits- like Rich's- in all of the riders in the GSTwin community.

Ave atque vale (Hail and farewell), Rich.

-Paul B.

Hey guys.

The funeral went pretty smooth, it was quite short :(

But it was very nice none the less. There was a great turn out because Rich was such a great guy. He will truly be missed.

And thanks so much for caring, guys. You guys are great!

Much love,

Sarah.

It was a very nice service. I was glad to meet so many of Rich's family and friends, especially Kim. I wish it were under better circumstances but Rich always did have a way of bringing people together. I wish I had prepared a few words, but I hadn't thought of it at the time (My family is catholic and services are a bit different) Norwich is very much like my own town, I understand now why Rich and I always seemed to be on the same page about many things.

I was especially touched by the collage of photographs Rich had taken accompanied by quotes off the board. Rich was very much a part of our lives and I'm glad that GSTwins was reflected upon as a part of his. Thank you all for welcoming us into your lives and allowing us to grieve with you.

Please keep in touch, I know I will be thinking of all of you, as will many others here.

the service was nice and im glad i got to meet kim face to face and talk with her.  it was also good to meet the family and friends.  i also was touched by the collages and especially his scrapbooks.  he saved every memory of his life in those books.  amazing.  there were letters and cards and reciepts and fast food wrappers and ticket stubs and so much more.

kim, thanks for letting us come today.  thanks for contacting me to begin with.  if you haddnt called me last saturday, we might not have known anything and just wondered.  we'll all be keeping you and your family in our prayers.

Ive read hours worth of his posts it just seem so sureal, shocking and unbelievable. I wish i had been here earlier i would have made a donation towards his flowers.

Rest in peace, thoughts go out to his fiance and family and all his friends. He was a fantastic guy.

I just got back home this afternoon from being on vacation for the past 8 days up near Canada. I haven't been able to read or post anything until now. I tried accessing the site from my cell phone but it said the threads/files were too large.

Kim, I want to thank you for calling me on Sunday morning and telling me about Rich. I didn't know what to say when I talked with you on the phone... I was so in shock from what you told me. I still can't believe Rich is gone. It truly breaks my heart that we lost someone so special ... I was blessed to have met Rich a few times in person. We got along well from the first time I met him. We always had a great time on rides we've been on. He's such a friendly, kind hearted, funny, genuine, caring person... and he adhored you Kim. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help you.

Rich, I am truly sorry for not being able to attend your services... I would have been there if I was able to. You were and always will be in my thoughts and prayers, and will be dearly missed! I wish I could have made the GS Camping ride... I never imagined we wouldn't be able to go on any more rides together. I was very much looking forward to the next ride. The last time I talked with you was when you and Amanda were trying to convince me to ride up to Sandy Valley. I told you I didn't want to risk riding in the rain, because I didn't want to chance getting into an accident, and I mentioned about 2 weeks ago, a friend I knew from High School was killed in a motorcycle accident... he was only 35, with a wife and 2 kids. I told you I was considering giving up riding... and now this. It tears my heart that we lost you, but I feel blessed and honored to have been able to know you and spend time with you & ride with you. You are an inspiration to us all. Tears are falling down my face... know that you will be missed sorely & always be in our hearts & souls... You have touched the lives of many!

For Chris, Amanda, Kim, Sarah, Aunt Anne, Tazz & the rest of Rich's family, and everyone else on the site... I was thinking as I was riding home through Binghamton today... I/we should have a Memorial Plaque made up in Rich's honor, and once it is finished, we could have a memorial ride to the site of his accident and have it posted there in memory of him. Perhaps his family could meet us all there and maybe we could have a little dedication to him. Since I wasn't able to make the service, this would be (to me) the next best thing to honor his memory.

Do you all think this would be a good idea, and if so, who would be interested in attending the ride/dedication? If there is alot of interest, I will proceed and post details as they come.

RIP Rich... I will miss you dearly!

I am just so lucky to have the friends and family I have. They made a beautifual reception after the service, that is where I was able to meet those from the gstwins site, who were so friendly!

I just wanted to thank everyone who put money in for the flowers and for everyones support again. I recieved my flowers and was so shocked! I immiadiatly took a few from the arrangement and went to the site of the accident; where I vented some anger!

LadyJules, your idea of a plaque and a memorial ride to the site is a wonderful idea!! I have been searching for something to do for Rich, but I coudlnt think of anything. I will still come up with my own for just him and I, but I do think that is a terrific idea! I dont ride obviously but I would come to the dedication.

Kim, and everyone else, I will contact a local place here that makes Plaques and find out how long it will take to have one made up for Rich. (If there's anything specific that you would like on it, maybe a saying or phrase Rich would want us to use on it, please contact me and let me know.) I will let everyone know when it is finished so we can set up a time and date for the ride to the site for the Memorial Dedication so as many people can be there as possible that want to be there, including all family, if they would like to join us. It would be nice to meet Rich's friends and family & share this with you all as well. Anyone is welcome, even if you don't ride. Rich would be happy and proud knowing so many people care about him.

I'm in too, as long as its not August 5th I've got a farm to run that week.  It's quite a ride for me too, but if anyone from CT/MA wants to go too we'd be travelling the same roads so they could ride with me if they wanted to.

I never knew how much I miss him til today's ride.  I broke up when I tried to say a few words about him.  I think Manjul (The_good_guy) taped it.  It was a good ride.  He woulda liked it.  We'll miss him dearly.

Godspeed Rich.  Although I didn't know you personally, I'll miss you.  You always had kinds words and lent a helping hand when you could.  Even after all of those posts, you didn't lose your patience.. never abrasive with your response to questions.  I hope your family and friends find peace, as you did in your life.

I've been reading this site for a few weeks now, and just tonight wandered into this forum.  Seeing how everyone here reacted and pulled together for this, and seeing what an effect that Rich had on everyone here really chokes me up.  It's so sad to hear about anyone being taken from us, but for someone who had the levity that Rich had, especially in this community, it's truly a tragedy.  I haven't read many of his posts, but from reading this thread, and the couple of tribute threads, I feel like I've lost a close friend.  I don't even know what to say.

I am so proud to have found such a wonderful community here, and I think I'll stick around.  O0

I logged in this morning for the first time in 12 days to find this thread, and read every post.  My mood changed from tears at the beginning to smiles when I saw his photos and read posts from his family.

I enjoyed the banter I had with Phae.  I will miss him here.  My thoughts and prayers are with the family.  Kim, it was easy to see how Phae felt about you, he shared his love for you with us.  I hope you find comfort in this hard time.  I can't imagine what you're going thru...  you have my thoughts and prayers.

I try will let you know sometime this week a tentative date for this. I want to finalize things with the plaque this week sometime & post up dates to see what's good for the family and everyone on here to wants to attend. I'll be in touch soon. (Rob, I sent you an email.)

I want to run this by everyone and see if anyone has any thoughts or better ideas for the plaque. It will be from the GS site so we should all have some input and I would really appreciate it as well.

Does anyone have any other thoughts as to what to have put on it? Here's what I was thinking... but not sure about the last 2 lines, or if it should be changed or worded differently. I want it to say something about his GS Twin friends & that he'll be missed, but I want it to sound right. I guess I just want it to be perfect for him.

What do you all think? I really appreciate your help.

Here is what I was thinking to put on the plaque:

In Loving Memory of Rich "Gator" Christie
              8-20-1980 to 7-1-2006
You will always be in our hearts & thoughts.
Love, Your family & friends at GSTwin

If you think something else would sound better, please let me know.

(Once I know what we want it to say, I will finalize the order and get a date when it will be done. Then I will post up and we can all pick a date, so Rob can tell the fire dept and they can block the road off for us. How does that sound?

Also, Rob needs to know about how many people would be interested in attending this Memorial ride, so please post up if you're interested in attending. Thank you all!  :kiss3:

One more thing... I started a new link to track this info... please see here... http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=28616.0

rest in peace

got my new gsf, came online here to read up on mods - that's how i met phaedrus.

rich did the flange/can exhaust mod & was giving me pointers, he had an extra flange. i was going to ride out to him and pick it up (i was so excited & impatient - i wanted to do that exhaust mod in a bad way). i couldn't get a free moment to ride out there so he shipped it to me - totally trusting an 'internet' friend that he just met. he gave me a good price for the flange & didn't even charge me for shipping. i had to remind him about that and sent the rest of the $$$ to him.

then i got to meet rich in person & a bunch of other gstwin riders at the carlisle, pa ride. i was riding sweeper (well, actually chris was in his car).

i have not been on this forum lately since i've sold the gsf. i read about the carlisle, pa ride from another cycle forum and wanted to see if the kids here were doing it again. then i read the news about rich.

i think, one of the coolest cats on here - you will be remembered.

I haven't been on here for a while as I haven't gone riding since I crashed last summer (over a year ago) and technically, I don't even own a bike right now.

I came by to post something happy, but I am greeted with the news that we've lost 2 members recently. I didn't talk to Rich much, but from what little I did talk to him, he seemed like a great guy. I'm sorry to hear about his loss and even though its more than a month later, I wanted to offer my condolences to his fiance and his family.

Although his life was cut way too short, at least he died doing something he loved to do. Rest in peace, Rich.

Kim, even if you didn't have any of his things... you will always have a piece of Rich in your heart and in your memories, as we all will. Rich will never be forgotten and will always be a part of each of us who's lives he touched. Everyone handles grief differently. Rich would want everyone to get along... let's not forget this is about Rich and celebrating his life. He will always be remembered.

I was looking at Rich's "myspace" profile tonight. I do this occasionally to remember Rich and the things he loves. It's bittersweet when I see the last day Rich ever signed into his "myspace" account: 06/30/06.

I thought I'd share part of it:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rich's Blurbs
About me:
I am 25, and happily in love with the girl of my dreams! Kim and I will be getting married in June of 2007, so congratulations to us! We'll keep you posted. I currently work for New York State as an IT guy in a healthcare facility. I am hoping to start working on my bachelor's in the Fall, which will help me further my career in Network Administration.
Who I'd like to meet:
No one in particular. I have a wonderful girl that I am very much in love with, so I am looking for friends only. I am also always looking for local motorcycle riding buddies to ride with or people with common interests. Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

You touched many lives, Rich, and we'll never be the same again. I'm sending good thoughts of healing for all your family, loved ones, and friends. We still miss you terribly.

I didn't mean what I said to you in a negative way. I simply meant to say that whether or not you wanted any of his things or not... it doesn't matter, because you will always have your memories and thoughts of him and the times you've shared together.

I'm sure this is hard for you all to deal with... which is why I said everyone handles grief in their own way. There is no right or wrong way.

All I can say is that time heals all wounds... but you will never forget the memories.

I think about him every day.   Strange...  I've never even met him.

That shows you how much of an impact he had on people.

  'Till we meet again dude.

losing friends is very hard.  i have lost 12 from my military service but also from my former riding/stunt group when i lived in canada.  we lost 3 or 4 a year but it was a large group.

I never had the opportunity to meet you, I just recently started with my second bike (2000 GS500E) - After reading and finding out about you, I've only read past postings on gstwins. I never had the opportunity to meet you in this life, but I'm sure we will meet in the next. We'll have to go for a ride together my friend. Look down on all of us from above and keep us safe and sensible when we're riding.

Rest, you did well...

Wow...  I've got a speech class this semester, and for the first speech, I'm doing an informational on how much more dangerous it is for riders when cages are on the road...

All the pictures I find for research and presentation and the songs for the presentation (Johnny Cash - Hurt  and  Three Days Grace - Never Too Late)...  ...they all make my eyes tear up and think of Rich.

We miss you buddy.

Hi there,
I miss you, too, Rich.
I have been thinking of you the last few days.
Today I went on a ride on a glorious day here and I'm pretty sure you were around.  :)
I hope Kim is doing well, too, and she is in my thoughts, too.
Ride safe, my GS500 friends.
Yours,
Todd

I'm thinking about you today Rich Christie..as I do most days. I miss our nightly chats and you harassing me to go to Dennys. It hasn't gotten easier or made any more sense, but I hope you know what a large impact you made on so many lives. Miss you everyday.

Haven't been here in a couple of years, but there is one sentiment in this thread that always stays with me that someone expressed, early on, and I've forgotten the exact wording, and don't want to check, since it means so much to me. Someone said that we'll never forget you, and to tighten our helmet straps. It was a throwaway comment, but for some reason it meant a lot to me. Every time I've ridden since then, that message has reminded me to check and tighten my helmet straps. It's a sort of mental comfort that if I tighten up my chinstrap, I won't need it. For the last two years I've avoided needing my helmet, but somehow tightening those straps made me feel better. Best wishes to you Phaedrus, and know that some people, like me, are safer because of your loss.

Oh my god.  I just met rich last weekend at the NE meet. And talked to him, and shared pics just the other day on IM.  He was a very nice person, and a very helpfull addition to this site. It truly hurts alot to have brought up the forum and see that picture in the corner.  I couldnt believe what i was reading.

RIP rich. It was an awesome ride last weekend, good memories.
Brother it is always Good, if you have to part company permanently ( until you re-unite), that you part with good memories, and fun times.

hard to believe that it's been over 10 years.  was feeling a bit sad and overwhelmed today, so I read Rich's grammar rant thread again; I love that thread. Reading Rich's grammar thread and this one is like taking a walk down memory lane... and visiting old friends.... and I used sucky grammar, cuz it seemed right.

You're missed old friend, and you'd like the new kids here. <3
