Anime?
« on: June 09, 2018, 12:39:26 AM »
Does anyone besides me watch anime?  (no, not that kind of anime, get your mind out of the gutter :nono: )

I tend to watch stuff out of the ordinary.  Never got into DBZ or Naruto or any of that, I'm more into the obscure or outrageous ones.

For example, I'm (re)watching "One Punch Man" and can't recommend it enough if you're into the whole superhero genre and ridiculous, over-choreographed, fantastical fight scenes.  It takes a very non-standard approach, however.  Rather than follow a hero who is challenged by, loses to, then ultimately defeats a powerful antagonist, in OPM the protagonist, Saitama, is omnipotent and cannot be challenged by any enemy, as he can defeat them all with just one punch (hence the name).  This makes the show incredibly interesting in it's premise as it doesn't follow the struggle of the hero to defeat the villain, but it follows the struggle of the hero to overcome boredom, feel challenged, and complete the mundane tasks of daily life, as well as highlight his struggle to be respected and accepted by his peers.

Here's a randomized plot-line that basically sums up the attitude of the show:

Some insanely powerful monster appears and starts destroying a city a'la Godzilla.  Saitama catches the story on the local news channel and decides to help, but the monster is quite a ways away.  Saitama is unemployed and doesn't have a car, and public transportation is not running since the city is on lockdown/being evacuated, so Saitama just jogs there.
By the time he gets there the monster has caused incredible amounts of destruction, and has beaten several other superheroes who have responded, so excited for the challenge Saitama squares off with the monster.  The fight begins, the monster performs some insanely powerful attack that causes a lot of property damage but doesn't phase Saitama at all.  Saitama then counter-attacks with a simple punch.  The monster explodes or something from the force, Saitama's fist is left smouldering, and his sly grin is now a disappointed frown.
On the way back home he decides to stop at the supermarket to buy something to prepare for dinner, but as he's in his superhero costume he realizes he left a coupon at home in his pants pocket so now he has to pay full price for eggs.  He curses the sky.  The end.

If that sounds stupid then it probably is, but the humor can be quite charming and the production value is incredible.
Unlike a lot of other shows the first episode is very concise in it's presentation of what the series is all about.  The first fight begins and ends before the opening credits even roll, so you get to see the attitude, action, and art-style in full swing right away.  If you're even a little bit interested and start to watch it, you can make it 3 minutes in and be able to make a fair decision to pass or continue watching.
By the way, it's on Netflix so it's really accessible.

I've got some other recommendations as well, if anyone is interested, and I'm open to suggestions if you have them.

Heavy Metal and Neon Genesis Evangelion were some that I watched as a kid.  My personal favorite is Cowboy Bebop.

One Punch Man I found funny.

I watch a bit of anime here and there. One Punch Man is fantastic, can't wait for the next season. If you haven't, you should check out Fullmetal Achemist: Brotherhood. It's one of my favorites.

One of my favorites is Akira from the 90's i think. I've seen some clips here and there of One Punch Man but never watched an whole episode. Another one I've been wanting to see is called Steam Boy. At least I think that's the name. I heard it's really awesome animation.

An ex of mine years ago wanted me to watch all the DBZ episodes... and so I did. They weren't bad, I enjoyed them for the most part but they did tend to drag out worse than a soap sometimes lol!

I also remember really enjoying this cartoon called Ultimate Muscle... it was on Saturday mornings in a lineup with TMNT... cracked me up!! I even got the GameBoy game to play. :icon_mrgreen:
Superbike bars, '04 GSXR headlight & cowl, DRZ signals, 1/2" fork brace, 'Busa fender, stainless exhaust & brake lines, belly pan, LED dash & brake bulbs, 140/80 rear hoop, F tail lens, SV650 shock, Bandit400 hugger, aluminum heel guards & pegs, fork preload adjusters, .75 SonicSprings, heated grips

Akira is a great movie.  I wish the technology was there to make a bike like that.

I didn't expect this much of a turnout, lol!

That's part of why I never got into it.  I heard DBZ: Kai is basically "DBZ:  Get on with it!", but I still don't have that much of a desire to watch it.

Bruh, you gotta watch it, for realz.

The original DBZ has a TON of filler episodes because the production company routinely caught up with the manga and had no more core content to make episodes for but they still needed to put an episode out. DBZ: Kai follows the manga with no extra filler episodes, so its much less meandering. However, if you didn't watch Dragonball or DBZ as a kid, it might not have much appeal for you.

The original Fullmetal Alchemist was in a similar situation. When they started making the show, the manga only had a couple issues out and they caught up really quickly. But, instead of making filler episodes, they just decided to not follow the manga and just started making up their own plot, with inspiration from the manga thrown in here and there. Honestly, its not very good lol. But Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood was made after the manga was finished and follows it to a T. Its seriously one of the best animes ever made in my opinion.

I remember Ultimate Muscle! What a strange show lol. Right up there with Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo in terms of sheer weirdness.

Inuyashiki - Not seen this one yet
Parasyte - Worth watching.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans -- Probably the one I enjoyed the most of the Gundam's I've seen.

Closest I get to anime is the MissHannahMinx channel on youtube, but that's just to keep abreast of the situation. Seriously have you seen the SWF animations of The Little Ninja? mind bending.

Here's a link to the files, you'll have to find something that can play swf files. Prolly a browser will do with the right plug in.

For MacOS the latest free version of elmedia player will play the files. These swf files are no longer available on the inter webs. https://mac.eltima.com/elmedia-player-download.html

So over the last week-ish I've been watching My Hero Academia. It's definitely enjoyable. A little tropey at times, but the story so far is pretty solid and the characters are interesting.

Not entirely off topic, but I went to a local Japanese restaurant called Raijin Ramen for my birthday, and got some Black-Garlic Tonkotsu, Karaage, and later that evening had some Yamazaki single-malt whiskey.  My sister got Miso, it was also tasty but she missed out on the Chashu!

If I had died in my sleep that evening I would have died happy!

Anyway, to keep it 100% on topic you all should check out Nichijou.  It's "slice of life" and high-school girls  :icon_rolleyes:, but very charming, rather innocent, and absolutely hilarious!
Much of the humor is done by basically taking the over-dramatic and highly stylized scenes typical of action animes and applying it to mundane tasks and events.
You want DBZ-esque "power up" scenes for someone who's trying to catch a piece of their lunch before it hits the floor?  Nichijou has got you covered!
How about someone pricking their finger and screaming in pain so loud that the sonic waves pierce through space and destroy another planet?  Nichijou!
Martial arts vs mosquitoes?  Nichijou...
Also for some reason there's a 5yr old girl who happens to be a genius that made an android teenage girl to take care of her and the house while she slacks off drawing and coloring sharks, and also they have a pet cat who can talk.
Because, well, Nichijou...

That does look good.  How was the whiskey?

I'd be interested in seeing a list of shows/movies that others have enjoyed, call it a top 15 list, as I'd like to compare it to what I have seen already.  I'll put mine together and post it up later.

Like nothing else on earth.

It's very similar to a Speyside Scotch if you're a whiskey drinker.  More on the sweet side, subtle toffee and honey with an ever so slight floral nose, gentle on the tongue with a delayed spice that warms your chest, and - now this can't really be put into words easily - it tastes distinctly Japanese.  Something like Talisker from the Isle of Sky has a bit of a saltiness to it, almost an oceanic flavor that's distinctly Atlantic.  In the same way the Yamazaki has this general "feel" of being, well, Japanese.  The earth from which the barley is grown, and the climate and location of the region in which Yamazaki is birthed lends it a distinctly Asian overtone, and it's one of those really odd kind of flavor profiles where if I gave it to you blind you might be like "Huh...  It has a bit a taste that I can't quite put my finger on," then I'd say "It's Japanese whiskey," and you'd go "Ah, that makes sense."

I may do the same, waiting to see how you format yours.

I was having to think of all the ones I've seen.  I've put more than 15, but I've tried to put down ones I liked enough to either purchase, watch more than once, liked enough I binge watched, or was looking forward to watch when the new episodes released.  I'm sure there are others that I might still have buried someplace and have forgotten about.

Ghost in the Shell - movie and SAC
Samurai champloo
Trigun
Martian successor nadesco
Attack on Titan
Samurai 7
Gun slinger girls
Samurai X
Blood the last vampire
Last exile
Robotech
Black Lagoon
Darker than Black
High school of the dead
Spriggan
Full metal panic
Wolf's Rain
Hellsing
Re:zero
Sword art online
Ruroni Kenshin
Log Horizon
Berserk - original OVA's not the new episodes.  The drawing style they used on the new episodes was annoying enough for me to stop watching.
Alderman on the sky
World Trigger
Mobile suit Gundam iron blood orphans
Vandred
Neon Genesis evangelion
Cowboy Bebop
Terraformars
Akira
Spawn animated series
Mushi-shi
Code Geass
My Hero Acedemia
Fafner
Eden of the East
Gantz
Gungrave
Initial D
One Punch Man
Howl's moving castle
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
