General GS500 Discussion / Right side of engine cool
Last post by Spleafsgs500 - March 19, 2024, 04:30:20 PM
I have a GS500 2003 and when I start my bike I can feel the left side of the engine gets hot right away and over time the right side will get slightly warm but nothing compared to the left side. Any insights what might be the issue or is this normal. Engine seems to be running pretty smooth.

Thanks, I ordered some. I also ordered a rubber stopper and will pack that on the bike just in case.

However I hesitate to do anything irreversible because I don't have a leak (yet?...).

So, two questions:

1. Has anyone gotten the 18mm pressed in OK?

2. Has anyone switched to a piss jug reservoir from another bike using the existing brake line?

Thanks!

Seems like Ebay is selling 4 x  18mm sight glasses for 5 bucks, probabaly worth a try.

Welcome, the Goose is nicely between your two old bikes in simplicity and reliability. An parts are super cheap on ebay. Keep u sposted on your reawakening.

So I looked at my bike.

It doesn't leak, but what I suspect happened is the outer glass must have broken years ago, and all I have is a single layer inner glass left... I think (?).

In any case, I measured Φ = 17.5mm with my admittedly dodgy calipers.

Has anyone tried an 18mm sight glass replacement?

Thank you all for your suggestions! Bluesmudge, I will attempt to check the spark on the left cylinder's plug to see if that helps me locate the issue. If the spark is a good one then I suppose my next step would be to check the fuel, which would mean cleaning out the left hand float bowl on the carbs.

 Hello everyone!
It looks like I'm going to be the new owner/caretaker of a GS500 soon.
I had actually hung up my riding gear and sold my last two bikes (1971 CB500 and 2017 Triumph Street Scrambler).
 Then my buddy reached out...

He has a GS500, affectionately known as The Goose, and he's offered to give it to me!
He's owned it forever and done some tasteful mods along the way. I'm sure it will be easy to "reawaken", and I don't plan on doing much other than maintenance, safety and maybe some handling upgrades.

Here's all the pics I have for now. I'll update and start a project thread when I actually get my hands on it.

Is the sight glass intended to be replaceable?

Is it a screw in type?

I'm planning ahead...

When you pulled the plug, did you check for spark by grounding it to the engine? You need to do that to determine if it's an electrical or fuel issue. Could be clogged carb or a bad coil or something else, no way to know until you narrow it down.

Does anyone have a working link to the DIY timing advancer instructions? The link in the Wiki is broken.
