Model years for Katana to GS rear shock swap

I'm thinking of swapping out the OEM rear shock on my '99 GS500 for a Katana shock, per the wiki's assertion that it's a perfect fit (that'll take me 5 hours to do, knowing me). Two questions:

1) Anyone know any good guides for this process? I'm hopeless the first time I do any repair/replacement, so knowing I'm at least on the right track is an enormous boon to my anxious nature.
2) Do I just get an iteration of the Katana shock which covers my bike's model year, or is there a specific one I should be looking for?
