What kind of metal? Salt water or fresh?

Go to a boat repair shop and ask for antifouling bottom paint.Val Zpar makes it in different colors. It will protect from all types of water.

Here's a list some are pool specific.

that stuff looks expensive, also do they make it in a spray can?

GeeP

For a second there, I thought you wanted to paint the object UNDER  water. :dunno_white:

Hmm.  Dunno if you can do that...
Every zero you add to the tolerance adds a zero to the price.

If the product "fails" will the product liability insurance pay for the "failure" until it turns 18?

No spray cans.It rolls or brushes on,and smooths out as it dries.I've used antifouling bottom paint on boats that go into sea and fresh water. It takes about 4 to 6 years for it to wear thin and need a recoat.

DO NOT use antifouling to protect underwater metal. That paint is designed to go over the normal hull paint and keeps barnacles and weed from growing. It is POROUS and is designed to gradually wear off to keep fresh poisons near the surface. It will put TOXIC chemicals in your pool!
Sorry for all the caps, but I own a yacht and know a bit about this, and you don't need antifoul, just a good quality epoxy paint over a well prepared surface.
Cheers, David.
