Liquid cooled means it's cooled by coolant (antifreeze) and a radiator.  Oil cooled is the same as air cooled.  Whether or not there is an oil cooler mounted outside the engine, there is nothing but oil and the outside air (no coolant) cooling the engine.

ahh, thanks! i always get that mixed up! in my mind it's "well oil is a liquid, right?"

Update...... bad one ><

Been off the bike for a few days now >< (since Fri I think)

Found one small exhaust leak, went to prepare to fill it and found a pretty large crack.
Filled those in, next day I started the bike up to make sure they were sealed until I got them welded... found Another hole ><

So, I decided just to take the suckers off for welding right then and there.

Day later and ALOT of hell...... they are Garbage.
Rusted and rotted to Hell, the pipes between the mufflers and header pipes. (header pipes come off)

So, im on the Super Magna forums right now trying to put together another exhaust. (complete one is just TOO expensive) $500+ used! $850 for aftermarket (only found ONE!)

Going to be using my mufflers and just having the pipes after the mufflers welded onto mine.

Had the left ones covered, and just now got an offer on what I hope is the right side (waiting for confirmation)
Hopefully they are the left ones and the mufflers look to be in better condition then mine and I wont be cutting the pipes off of them.

Just piecing together stock pipes.

As even with the baffles out, it just doesnt sound right. (so Everyone says on the SM forum)
As this is a 4cyl motor in it, Not a V twin.

GREAT news tho!

Just got off the phone with a member that is going to sell me the complete left half of the mufflers and pipes. (uncut)
which actually look better then mine!

Just need to have my welder fix this hole up.
Shouldnt be a problem at all for him either!

Right side, another member is cutting the piping off at the mufflers and those will be welded onto my current ones.

then I should be all good!!

(edit)
just got an email from the right side seller.
Isnt going to be cutting off the mufflers now and just sending them complete so its easier on my welder.
if they even need to be cut off, Might even be in better condition then my current ones.

Also selling me a piece of pipe to weld and fix up that hole.
along with the 88 stock tank decals.
Its black and says Magna.
vs
the 87 that is just plain UGLY, which is a single wing that says Honda in it.

Def. getting hooked up and Really appreciate it!

Update!  :thumb:

Since im stuck waiting until Weds & Thurs for the exhaust parts, might as well clean up the metal and everything else until then.

Sanded down the lower fork tubes the other day, came out pretty nice!
Took the tank off, cleaned up under there as it was quite dirty, and waxed the frame for extra protection.
As well as scrub and wax rear lower areas of the frame as well.

This morning, went up to Harbor freight and got some buffing pads for my drill and compound.
As well as mothers polish yesterday.

Started out on the right side cover that I sanded before.
Polished to a mirror shine!!

After buffing but before polishing.

after buffing but before polishing.

Fork tubes came out freakin GREATTTTTTT!!!!!!
Look back at one of the previous pics at how bland, dull, and aged they were!

After buffing and polishing!

Update!!!  :thumb:

Done for the day!!!

UGH!
So beat, filthy, sweaty, & sore!
Cant wait to just relax in the tub for awhile!

Left cover all shined up!

Might go over it again with 1500 and 2000 grit, buff and polish it again for good measure.

Before.

after

Also got the rear headers back in with fresh gaskets.

UGH Im never taking those off again!
Such a pain getting the bolts back in from like NO room!!!

(edit)
and next, tomorrow or Monday.
Take off the pegs and do the same to those.
Mostly because of the rust.

Small update.

Havnt had time to do much of pretty much Anything.
A few Minor things is all.

Buffed and Polished the rear rim and levers.
and added stock 88 decals to the tank vs the ugly honda wing 87 ones.

Got my exhaust parts in yesterday, was Very freakin happy....... until I took them down to the welder....
Said he cant get to them until late Sat or Sun.........
Pretty ticked off at that as if he woulda let me know that when I initially asked, I could of called some shops for quotes and made an app before the parts even got here!!!!

So now im stuck again! ><

Heres how shes sittin right now.
Exhaust is off and side covers, along with a few things under the seat as I need them off to get the exhaust back on when its done.

Whoa, missed this whole shpeal!! Went back and read over what happened. Seemed like a win win. I really like the look of the Magna

You can tell someone is taking care of this beast now! She's really starting to shine nice. Got to show my friend this thread. He just picked up an old '82 yama, and needs to start spit shinning

Update!  :thumb:

Exhaust was done today!

Talk about a pain in the @$$ to put back on alone!
Never wanna do that unless its a brand spankin new exhaust!

Just 2 minor leaks now.
Middle connecting pipes is the biggest one but not much at all.
Probably just going to have him weld the suckers together while its on the bike if he can.

Other one is the left front header pipe where it goes into the rear pipes.
Nothing major there and its very small, just need to replace the gasket in there.
Not even sure if there was one as the pipe went in WAYYY too easily compared to the right side.
I'll get some more on Weds.

Took it for a ride around the block, rode Great!
Was about to go wash up and get ready for an actual ride.
Did the usual checks.... brake lights were Staying on.
oye was I flaming mad! (always One more problem!)

Came in, posted for help on the SM forum but soon deleted it.
Googled the problem and it gave me some ideas.

Was the rear brake lever.
I guess from all the sanding and buffing, I must have bent the mechanism holder up a little bit that makes the rear brake light light up when you step on peddle.
Just bent it back down a little bit (its fine) and the light went out.

Just got back from a nice hour ride around.

Bikes runnin Great!

Also shifting ALOTTTTTTT more smoothly!!!
Guess that slave cylinder cleanup and fluid flushing did the job.

Now to relax a bit then head to bed to meet up for the usual large sunday group ride!

Will post some better then before pics when I get the chance.
I literally Just got done at 11pm, cleaned up and went for a ride at about 11:30 and just got back.

Still need to clean it all up again.

Update!

Finally got to take the beast on a LONG ride!
Usual Sunday group ride of 150 to 200 miles. (no highways!, all back and mostly twisty roads)

So now the review and comparison.

Performance wise..... it beats the GS500 completely in every way!

More power. (obviously)
Can handle twisties FARRRRRRRRR better then my GS!
and I mean FARRRR better!

One example: this 4 lane road that goes up a pretty nice size mountain. (twisty all the way down)
Going down on the GS, I could do Maybe 60 with quite a few pucker moments and maybe slide out, so I usually stayed at 50.

This time, I said the hell with it!
Time to see what shes made of! hahaha
When a car wasnt in front of me, 75 to 85 the whole way down and not a single pucker moment!!!
Loved it!!!

As for being nimble.
Isnt a whole lot difference.
Pretty much only in size.
GS dry weight is 440 pounds.
SM 529 pounds (wet)

Isnt a ton of difference there when it comes to comparing a sport bike with a cruiser.
As thats pretty light for a cruiser!

I've gone faster then my old GS in turns a few times and the tires stuck to the road like friggin Glue!

Happiest part of all!!!!
NO MORE SQUISHED BALLS!!!!!  :woohoo:  :woohoo:  :woohoo:

SM specs.
Manufacturer    Honda
Also called    Super Magna
Production    less than 20,000 total
Predecessor    V30
Class    Cruiser
Engine    699 cc 1987 / 748cc 1988
Top speed    125 mph
Power    88 PS @ 9000 rpm / 86 bph
Torque    6.6 kg-m /7000 rpm, 47.74 lb-ft
Transmission    6-speed, shaft drive
Suspension    39 mm non adjustable fork, dual coil over shocks
Brakes    Single disc front, drum rear
Tires    Front: 100/90-19 tubeless, Rear: 150/80-15 tubeless
Wheelbase    1660 mm / 65.35 inches
Dimensions    L 2385 mm / 94 inches
W 810 mm / 32 inches
H 1155 mm / 45.5 inches
Seat height    27.8 in (706 mm)
Weight    529 lb (240 kg) (wet)
Fuel capacity    13 L / 3.43 US gallons
Fuel consumption    30 to 45 mpg

Thats probably the only bad thing I can say about it.

the MPG isnt "too" bad but the gas tank only holds 3.43 gallons.
So I find myself filling up alot more.

Well theres my review.
Mentions anything I missed.

and No I am Not knocking the GS.
If I was, why would I still be on here?

Update  :D  :thumb:

Had a few exhaust leaks.

Rear side of the one header pipe that goes into the rear muffler pipes was missing the filler gasket, so it was leaking.
Got one out Perfectly from one of the old pipes and isnt leaking now.

Middle area of the cluster has a small leak between the teeth of the female pipe slot.
additional clamp took care of that.

The right top pipe that goes to the rear headers that he welded on was too far forward.
Had to heat and bent it back a bit and I cracked the weld a little bit on the bottom.
Got that fixed last night.

No more exhaust leaks and shes sounding and running Alot better!  :thumb:

All that is left during this season is to shine up the rest of the metal.

and heres some pics as shes sittin and runnin now  :thumb:

enjoy  :D

(edit)

Well, since im on here I might as well update.

With......pretty much Nothing! hahahaha
(which is a GOOD thing!)

Last post was about the LEDs.... what a clusterfunk!!!!!!

Solder points after cutting the 5 meter strip were Garbage!!!

Long story short, total waste of Alot of time and not much money.

If I keep the bike, will either just string up the entire 5 meters in one Long go around the bike (can easily do it without looking like crap)
or have a friend do it for cheap.

atm im iffy about selling it.
Until recently I was hell bent on selling it and getting either a TL1000S or Superhawk.
But now, im not 100% sure I want to sell.

Im missing the ride of a sport bike Alot more then enjoying the cruiser style ride.

But I still enjoy the bike alot, so im a little conflicted.

After shining up a few main parts (no additional parts since my last posts)
I've just been riding!

Tires finally done for, so I ordered a set of Shinko 777's that will be here Monday.

Going to strip, sand, & polish the extra rear rim I have before they arrive tho.
get that sucker lookin like its chromed.
Also the smooth areas of the front rim and probably paint the rough areas that cant be shined up black like most do.

Other then that.
IF I decide to keep it.

Gonna need to check the valve clearance.
Then just clean it up even more over the winter.

Plans past that arent even a thought now tho (employment isnt... well just Isnt right now!) hahaha

PS.
Just because I dont own a GS anymore doesnt mean im not on here.
and I Still appreciate ALL the help I've gotten with my old GS!  :thumb:

Funderb

I was in talks with a guy to trade my gs for his 01 FZ1, it apparently needed a little cosmetic work, but ran fine. Then? nothing. just disappears from the earth like "poof"

so now I just look at your post and hope for the future. that shaZam! always happens to me.

as for LEDs, its usually easier just to buy them in little segments, but, live and learn i suppose!
