I need it next :)
Please pm me
Thanks! :thumb:
I just sent you a pm
is this the one with all the shims, i have a few to donate as they are thicker then my needs, and i might be needing some smaller shims myself.
Yeah, he's talking about this kit:
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbburma.net%2FMiscFotos%2F100_1983_ValveToolPackage.jpg&hash=5c2b93ca60496e68858f7ab77f6338e95c1f444d)
It should be en route from TX to OR right now. Except for the 2.15 "test shim" I'm afraid the kit doesn't currently include anything smaller than a 2.68 or so. I had to put a 2.60 in my bike for now, even though it needs a 2.50. As the kit makes its way around the country I hope to gather some more 2.5x - 2.6x shims.
You could send your extras directly to me if you like. That might be easier than timing things to coincide with the kit's location. I'm hoping to keep it "on the move" as continuously as possible.
Since you wanted "Kerry's shim kit " I wont give you mine...
My calipers are better ... true digital ... and my shims collection is better too ... 2.50 to 2.80... and my feeler guage is also worn to the 1 thousandth from the 1.5 ... its 1 thousandths in one spot and 1.5 closer to the hinge ... but I guess you dont want that ...
Cool.
Srinath.
And it has tweezers instead of the magnet and the screwdriver ...
Cool.

*sigh* now srinath don't get upset! lol... I had no idea anyone else had a shim kit... I only had heard of kerry's.... I'll be glad to add any extra shims I have/get/have to buy to anyone who will let me use their kit..
Thanks!
I dont have a "kit" per say ... just all that crap I have to do this ...
I'll send it out in a few hours ...

Oh yeah? But does your kit have a 2.15 test shim? Just joking.
I think this is
great - the bigger the "community chest" the better! :thumb:
PS - I like the tweezers idea. I'm sure I used them at least once. But after having the shim go "thwack" onto the magnet and pull right out I've never looked back. No dropping it down the "well"....
Tweezers would sure help for putting the shims back in though, especially on the exhaust valves. The intake valves are close enough to level that the shim fairly JUMPS back in place. But with the more steeply-angled exhaust valves the shims tend to overshoot the bucket when I drop them in.
Where is the rag that needs to be stuffed in the timing chain slot so nothing drops into the abyss? :dunno:

Heck no ... 2.15 ...I think we discussed this ... you are going thinner and I am going thicker ... I started out at 250-260 and now I am mostly 260-270's and 1 comming upon 280 ... but I have these other Gs'es that roll into my life ... never know what they have...
Cool.

The one time I did not have a rag in the slot, a shim slipped and well....after dropping the oil pan and then pulling the clutch cover I found the shim.
to answer the original question "me"
se7enty7, please PM davipu and send him your address. If he gets done with the toolkit and has nowhere to send it, I have instructed him to return it to me. But that just makes it more expensive for the next guy, who will need to reimburse me for shipping it to him AND pay to ship it on to the next person in line.
If we can keep the kit moving, each person will only have to pay shipping on it once. :thumb:
PS - Part of the deal is that each person tosses in their cast-off shims. Hopefully you will do this whether you find replacements in the kit or you have to buy your own replacements (because the kit doesn't have the right size).
I can't think of a better way to build up a nice selection of shims. And if you tossed in your old ones after paying for new ones, you should have "direct shipment" rights straight from the kit for your next valve adustment.
what does everyone think of a 5 dollar charge for the video, and the money going to buy more shims?
I've seen the video...well worth AT LEAST 5 bucks. Oh yes, I'll need Kerry's tool kit after se7enty7 or whoever else is in line is done with it. I'll be doing Daniely's and my own bike's adjustments/checks with it...and would throw in my shims if I in fact need to change them.
About the video, I went from being real close to just having a shop do it (I'm at ~8K miles without a check) to being very confident that I can do it and not mess anything up. It is really that easy once you see it done.
se7enty7, are you getting Srinath's or Kerry's kit? Who is getting Kerry's kit next?
no body knows.
Mine went out yesterday priority mail ... to him...
Cool.
Srinath.
davipu, I just sent you a PM with Mk1inCali's name and address.
If you get done with the kit before Monday and he doesn't get online or see these posts before then, we can save some time by sending it out anyway....
ok it's a plan then
im lost.... what is shim for???
it is a little piece in the motor that provides the proper clearance between your valve and the camshaft.
so the plan as it sounds right now is that I am going to drop the kit off on wednesday morning on my way through.
I think my next two weekends are open, so I should be able to get Daniely's and my bikes taken care of, so probably 2 weeks and I'll be able to send out the kit again. Bringing up the 5 dollar shim contribution/video deal...If either Daniely's or my bike need any shims, what shims should I have the LBS order as well? I'm guessing 2.45-2.55 range, but Kerry, any ideas on that?
I don't have a good feel for the variation in ALL GS500s, but the few that I've worked on have needed anywhere from 2.40 to 2.65. The ones on the thinner end of the range have always gone for tight exhaust valves, while the 2.55-2.65 have been for intake valves.
Again ... it will depend on the factory-installed thicknesses, the number of miles on the engine, etc. If you can get quick turnaround on shim orders I would wait until you see what you need and what shows up in the kit. Besides, if either of you have Srinath-style engines where the clearances actually get looser....
Alright, sounds good Kerry, I'm going to check with my LBS and see how fast they can get 'em to me. Probably do Daniely's bike this weekend and get that all kosher...Seems like his is more out-of-whack while riding than mine is, plus he's got 11.7K on his, mine with 8.2K. Might just be the weird altitude jetting that we haven't changed yet since he hasn't ridden it a whole lot as of late. Anyway, I'll be sure to post what changes we make if any once we break the two bikes down, for future reference!
Anyone wanna bet they don't have a setup like mine?
I too had the honor of using Kerry's valve adjust kit. Problem was the valve clearance on both exhaust camshafts were too tight & both shims that were currently inside were 2.15 mm (the smallest Suzuki makes according to Kerry :? :? ).
The only thing I know is to take it to the shop and let them figure it out. I know it will cost me and arm and a leg, but I figure there is got to be something other underlying reason why they are sooooo tight.
Yea there is an underlying reason ... the damn bike is lean as hell ... making the valves run hotter and that in turn makes them softer and that accelerates wear ... If you had the same quality material (Dripping and flowing torrent of sarcasm here) that kawasaki used in their intake valves on the EX and ZX and ZG (concours) and ZL (eliminator) motors of yore by now your valves will have turned into fresh ground pepper ... rejet if your valves get tighter, if you valves get looser ... change the oil more often and run higher quality oil in it and make sure its topped up... having said that ... a little bit of both has to happen ... cos these things all clobber each other many many times a second ... so do the best and it will not drastically change ... Mine get thicker ... albeit slowly ... I have moved up less than 2 sizes on average (yea yea I know about the mathematician that drowned in the deep end of the pool cos it was an average of 4 feet only) but couple of my valves have moved 1 size and the other 2 ... right intake is one of them ... and left exhaust have gone up 2 ... BTW the stoopid right intake has a scratch in the cam ... which I have been staring at for 40,000 miles and has not changed much at all ... :thumb: ... My advice for long life on valves ... rejet and make it run the coolest possible, run the best oil you can get - and remember cheaper is not neccesarily bad, and pricier isn't neccesarily the best, keep it clean and topped up ... and avoid running too many low rpm's and excessive idling ... 4K minimum if you are moving, and no more than 3-4 mins of idling ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Hmm. I think I could make use of this kit.... how does one get in line to use it? Hehe.

Anyone here from the bay area???
Haven't had the time lately to check in here every day like I have for the past few months, so forgive the time lapse, but yes, Eisenfaust, I'll PM you when I'm ready to send the kit to you. Probably be 2 after two weekends, but might be faster than that if I can get one of the two bikes I'm going to do, done and checked out this weekend. Eisen, if you don't check here regularly, you can PM me with your email address and I can just contact you that way if you like.
Add me (and conanlloyd) to the list.

yep dropped it off about 2 in the morning on wednesday.

Hey davidpu...Sorry if I wasn't very cordial, not too used to getting up at 2 AM and riding in such cold...Oh yes, and work on house stuff/my truck has progressed much faster than I thought, so I should be able to get my valves checked tomorrow (Sunday) and get new shims, if I need them, ordered and coming my way Monday morning. I haven't talked with Danny lately, so I might be able to send the kit out before this week is out. Eisenfaust, I'm sending you a PM now to get your address...so I can ship it out as soon as I'm done with it.
hey don't worry about it. I completely understand, I was expecting snow in the pass and there wasn't any so I made great time, I was expecting to be there around 8 not 2.
So Davipu rode his bike to Southern CA to give you the kit ... damn that's some service ... same day delivery eh... and we mean it...
Cool.
Srinath.
no no, I rode down with my mother as she was wanting to drive down to SD for thanksgiving.
And I rode 5 minutes west to Highway 99 from my house on my GS. Reminded me of being back at my old job, get up at 4 in the morning and ride up to Chowchilla/Madera area to inject Posilac into cows.
Man, I hated that job.
11.50/hr was really nice though for a kid fresh out of HS with a big block truck to buy parts for...
heh.. I picked a townhouse that is as close as possible to my work... like .5 miles... my car isn't even warmed up (when I drive it!) by the time I get there.... and I can ride even if it's cold cause it's so short
school, on the otherhand, is a 10 mile, 45 minute commute in heavy traffic... rarely ride the bike cause I worry about aircooled+stopped traffic==bad...
seventy- You can't lanesplit?
only in cali can you lanesplit, and then it still isn't exactly leagle, it just isn't illeagle.

Not so fast!
Check out
this old post. Ignore the helmet-related stuff, if you can.
ok, so it is legal if done in a safe and prudent manner.
Lanesplitting is.. interesting. Its a skill needed for survival here in SF... I'll do it if theres no dferental in speed between the lanes I'm splitting.... something about having different speeds on each side of me icks me, saftey wise... one more factor in an already difficult juggling act.
My preferred thing, and something that doesnt really qualify as lanesplitting, but still goes tolerated by (at least) the SFPD... going to the head of a line at a light, between the cars. Makes city riding so much easier.
its illegal to lanesplit here.. even if it was legal i wouldn't do it. at most, I'll pass a couple of STOPPED cars at a red light to get to where I can turn
here in atlanta people dont pay attentiont to jack
I have noticed that people down in LA/SoCal are much better about leaving room for bikes than cage pilots are here in San Joaquin Valley...must be the huge number of bikes that do it down there, along with people's time spent in stopped rush hour traffic. I like doing it, I feel like people are actually watching for me while splitting, rather than waiting to rear-end me or cut me off completely. Saves massive amounts of time, even on my city's main drag which is just 4 lanes with malls on each side.

also, I added the allen wrench required to remove the valve cover... it's the only thing that's involved with adjusting valves that wouldn't be in a socket set... if I can find my telescoping magnet I may include that as well
Quote from: se7enty7also, I added the allen wrench required to remove the valve cover
Good show! :thumb: I guess I should have done that, too.
For anyone on the waiting list for my kit, you'll need:
1) A 10mm socket -- to remove the side plastics ('89 to '00 models)
2) A 12mm socket or wrench -- for the fuel tank mounting bolts
3) A flathead screwdriver -- to turn off the petcock under the fuel petcock. The longer the better.
4) Pliers -- to unhook the fuel hoses from the tank.
4) A 6mm Allen wrench - to remove the valve cover. The longer the better.[/list:u]Everything else is "in there". Well, except for some optional acetone and Q-tips. (For cleaning out the groove in the valve cover -- in case you want to seal the gasket onto the cover.)
I had two identical 6mm allen wrenches... of the perfect size. They fit around things really well to remove the valve cover....
OK... I just sent PM's to Kerry and Se7enty7.

My class got cancelled for tomorrow, so after work I am riding home and checking my bike out. Since it's been jetted correctly it's whole life, with 8.3K miles on it now, I should be able to use shims from the kit if it even needs anything different...I don't know if Daniely will be able to get his bike over to my house also, but the kit will be sent out to Eisenfaust on Monday, the 6th. I think it's the 6th. Anyway, Eisenfaust, send me a PM with your mailing address so I can box it up and have it headed your way Monday morning.
Kerry, there are already 2 copies of the Rough Edit .wmv CD's included with the kit. Shall I include my copy since I am going to buy a DVD from you, so we can distribute the WMV versions to people that would rather have 'em, riding piggyback on the toolkit?

Sure, why not? If anyone wants to keep one of the CDs in case they buy their own tools "for next time" ... they can!
Update-Checked my bike this afternoon, 3 were tight, both exhausts had 2.75's, so I moved down to 2.65's to get a clearance of .07 on both sides. Right side intake was too tight (<.04mm) with it's 2.55 although I could spin the bucket really easily, but there were no 2.50's in the kit and I'm not going to have time to order anything smaller by next Monday. The left intake clearance was .04 as is, but I don't know what size shim it had. Now I'm off to put the valve cover back on and re-assemble. Hope to do it in 20 mins or so...I'm not as quick as Kerry (14 minute man!!).
Whahoo!!! She runs!!! No leaks either. I ended up playin' guitar with one of my bass-playing friends and then taking forever to eat dinner, I watched a short bit of a show on the Bakersfield sound (early country music). Anyway, all that took way longer than what it should have, but I messed around and cleaned the engine and frame and carbs up really well and took my time actually doing the adjustment/check since it was my first try at it. So...all told, actual time spent working on it...definitely under 2 hours, probably 1:15-1:25 or so. With messing around cleaning it up like somebody might, schedule 3 hours to get it all done and you will be safe. Oh yeah, Kerry's video served very well as a visual check list to getting everything un-done in the proper order.
Great stuff having all the tools ready and right there, and clean to boot. I'm going to order some shims from my 'Zuki dealer here in town and ship them to whoever has the kit when they reach me as my donation to keeping the tool kit around and available. Anybody know how much each shim will cost? I figure I'll stick 15-20 bucks into 'em if they are 2 bucks each or so. That sound about right for prices? Ideas on something else I could buy to help the cause rather than sizes of shims that are currently not in the kit?
Quote from: Mk1inCaliWhahoo!!! She runs!!! No leaks either.

Quote from: Mk1inCaliAnybody know how much each shim will cost?
Unfortunately, I think they range from $7 to $12 or so - each! :o
Sure enough, the vendors on my
Parts Fiche Links page list them at
$7.86,
$8.40 and
$10.34.
A good dealer will swap you straight across for used shims in their colledction of cast-offs. Or they might charge you $5 or so. It all depends....
JEEZ...I guess I should have checked to see how much they were before saying that...Ah well..I'll figure out some way to donate something to keep the kit alive.
OK I was thinking We can machine up shims that are thinner than 2.15 or thicker than 3.15 was it ... what is the big deal... sand off the thin ones to get even thinner... and OK have to make thicker ones... but its basically a hunk of steel, we could heat it cherry red with a torch and drop it in water or oil ... and have it heat treated ... its steel, do what ever with it, very good and predictable to work with. Anyone here have any ideas ... or think this one is dumb ....
Cool.
Srinath.
once you start going thinner you are going to have problems with heat warping, and at that point you need to figure out why the valve is seating so far into the head, ie worn valve seat, streched valve shim not seating in shim bucket (heat warpage of bucket). thicker shims have other problems, like carbon build up behind the valve face that isn't allowing it to seat. once you start going so thick you also might have clearance problems between the valve and the piston.
OK I thought thicker was wear on the cams ... OK you start losing lift and hence power ... but other than that ... thick should not be an issue ... Oh never mind I answered my own Question... thicker is wear on stems and buckets ... the round side of cam never hits the shim or anyhting for that matter ...
Cool.
Srinath.
I would like to check the shims on my bike. the feeler i have only goes down to 2 thou. and that wont fit. Think i need new shims. How do i get on the waiting list.

EDIT: I should have asked whether you were closer to the East coast or the West one. Either way, you might consider getting on the list for Srinath's kit instead. I believe it's a shorter list. Let us know!
Im on the west coast, as for kits i have a caliper i just need shims, the tool and a feeler gauge that goes down to .0015 mine only does .002 thou metric would be even better.
Sent the kit off today via USPS to Eisenfaust up in Frisco for ~6 bucks.

Your .0015" blade is about .038mm thick. The thinnest blade in "the kit" is .04mm, so no advantage there. :(
But hopefully the tool and the shims (and the video) will be useful. :dunno:
Quote from: Mk1inCaliSent the kit off today via USPS to Eisenfaust up in Frisco for ~6 bucks.
Did you happen to take an inventory of the shim collection? What's the thinnest one? (Not counting the "test shim".)
Eisenfaust - Could you print out a copy of my just-completed Valve Shim Selection Chart (http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/GS500_Valve_Shim_Selection_Chart.pdf) for inclusion in the kit?
Thanks! :thumb:
I did not inventory Kerry, but I think there were some as low as 2.45/2.50 if memory serves...
did they get messed up in the box?
No, they were all in the correct partitioned areas as far as I could tell...I swapped in my 2.75's for 2.60's and there were no 2.65's or I would have used those. With the height of the peanuts/other stuff in the box, it's impossible for the shims to shift cubbies...I think it's impossible anyway...
It looks like you only had to buy one shim - good for you! :thumb:
PS - I'm jealous of that slim magnetic pickup tool -- I'll bet it works great!
If there is the need for a peticular size and you have plenty of thicker shims, i have access to a precision grinder, i might be able to grind them down.
That's good to know! :)
I think it would be good to have some "in-between" sizes for those times when the clearance with a standard-sized shim is right on either .03mm or .08mm. Normally your only choices would be to go from the tight end of the spectrum to the loose end, or vice versa.
Yeah ... in-between sizes would be COOL. 8)
hey Kerry, while Tony (mk1incali) had the kit in his possession, we did my valves as well, all were within spec. Just wanted to thank you for puttin this kit together and making the video. GREAT STUFF!
I'm glad to help out. There's nothing I like better than helping to "learn" somebody something USEFUL that they didn't know before.
Good luck selling your (properly adjusted!) bike. :)
I received Srinath's kit today... nobody has signed up for it next (that I know of) I have added Kerrys instructional cd to the kit.
I should get the job done this weekend unless I don't have the right shims.
Eisenfaust - Here's an even bigger favor:
If the valve adjustment kit currently has a 2.50mm shim (and you don't need it) would you consider mailing it to me? This is the size that I needed but didn't have when I made the video. I keep forgetting that I still haven't bought one.
I'll reimburse you for the postage.
Can i get Srinath's next?

iirc srinath's kit had 250.. not 100% sure though
Yea mine did, and no way I'll need a 250 ... like I said I am getting thicker on the 89 ... no clue on the 95.

so it kind of looks like we are ending up with a east coast kit and a west coast kit. maybe we need two threads? one for each to rsvp spots?
Well mine seems to be making a trip to the west coast ... raceratb is in LA ... you think it might help to send the west coast kit to him...
Cool.
Srinath.
We shouldn't lose more than a day or two in shipping either kit across the country and back. It takes most folks longer than that to get around to using the kits. raceratb wisely signed up on the "Srinath Kit" list because almost nobody else was in line. :)
We should probably organize the waiting lists by kit rather than by coast. But if two interested parties are within one mailing day of each other we could encourage them to go back-to-back, and even give the 2nd guy "cuts in line" in special situations.
After all, it's gonna be a long winter ... right? :dunno:
I was thinking E/W coast kits whould help reduce shipping time, and cost for all, but it dosen't really matter as it seem to take about a week once you get the kit to do the adjustment.
Kerry I hadn't watched the video all the way thru until last night... now I see why you need the 2.50 shim! Let me know if you want me to pull it out of Srinaths kit and send to you. Too bad I didn't realize it sooner: I sent you a letter yesterday.
I would LOVE to have that 2.50 shim. But make sure you don't need it first. If it ends up being extra, PM me for my address.
Thanks!
Yea what winter ... we got none of that around here ...
Anyway trade me a thick shim, north of 275 ... yummmmmm.... for that 250 ...   ...
Its a race to see who's gonna end off the scale I think... I might take my buckets out and put material on the back so I can drop into useable range if that happens ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Cool, indeed! When I sent it out, my kit had a 280 (or was it 285?) that I can swap you for.
Maybe Eisenfaust (or the next person in line) can be persuaded to mail it to you....
I'm now on the "list" for one of the kits. Do they BOTH have a copy of the video? If not, is there a way to get one added?
Thanks!
Yes both kits have the video.
I did my adjustment today, and everything was in spec. So I'm pulling the 250 for Kerry before I send it to raveratb. Joerocker, you can pm raceratb and give him your address for when he is through with the kit.
bumping this back up
I think the current list for Kerry's kit is:
Eisenfaust (has it now)
me, Jeff P
Joerocker?
The list for Srinath's looks to be:
Stephen072774 (has it now)
raveratb
Joerocker?
No rush Eisenfaust, it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if the kit doesn't arrive until say Jan 6th ;)
jeff
I sent the kit to raceratb yesterday, its scheduled for delivery friday, dec 17.
Hey Jeff P, I'm just about done with it.. I did my adjustment the other night... swapped out two shims. Once I have the bike back together, I'll pack everything up, and give you a PM for your address :)
I'll be away for a week but I'll take whichever kit is ready first. I PMd raceratb already with my address.
BTW: Kerry, seshadri_srinath, you guys are great to have done this for everyone.
All finished. Im sending it to JoeRocker monday. BTW some time saving tips. 1-remove the fuel lines from the petcock not from the tank, much easier that way. 2- only remove the front 2 bolts of the valve cover breather. 3-instead of removing the two bolts that directly attach the tank to the bracket remove the 2 that attach the bracket to the frame. you usually have to remove it anyways and this way you dont have to try and wedge things in to get to those 2 tank bolts or risk losing one of those rubber washers like i did.
i need to be added to this list... BUT i'm not going to need / be able to use it until maybe January 15.
doing all 3 bikes in 1 shot!
thanks!
chris<pixelmonkey>:D
OK I'll jump in the queue for mine right after Joerocker is done with it ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Okay, I saw joerocker's posts about his troubles with the valve checks. I think it's time for me to do one too, considering my bike apparently has never had its valves checked in its 8 years and 8700 mile lifetime.
I'd appreciate being added to the list for Srinath's kit. Looks like the lines for the kits go like this now:
Kerry's kit:
JeffP (Jan 6th or so)
Pixelmonkey (Jan 15th or so)
Srinath's kit:
joerocker (has it now)
srinath
xtalman
Thanks guys, for providing this great service.
Thanks for the update. :thumb:
I had gotten lost and was wondering who had which kit and who was next in line....
BTW, Ed_in_Az threw in an unopened Motion Pro valve tool when he sold me his bike. With my original tool zipping around the country I don't think I want to sell this second one, but I would be open to sending it out for quick round trips.
*BUMP*
Hey guys, I wanted to see the status on these kits. I'd like to add myself to the list. Are these floating around West coast / east coast? or are they all over.
If all over I believe I'll add myself to Kerry's list as that line seems less.

OK I have been unable to open the CD ... it does say windows media player but doesn't open ... so I guess who ever copied it made some mistake.
I'll send it out today anyway. Maybe a good disc should be added to that at some point.
Cool.
Srinath.

Wasn't me. I got the CD from Kerry and copied it for myself, I put the original from Kerry in your kit. Both the original and the copy I made for myself worked fine. :dunno:
Windows media player stinks. Get winamp from
www.winamp.com
maybe it has something to do with the computer literacy of the user????
Quote from: davipumaybe it has something to do with the computer literacy of the user????
OK wise guy ... I installed winamp and have audio ... no video ... now what.
Cool.
Srinath.
make sure the view is on video. Winamp shows the video in a seperate window.
Hey, don't bring Srinath along too fast. He's liable to come up with all kinds of feedback that I can't do anything about without reshooting....
Just kidding, Srinath. :guns: Fire away! If I ever DO reshoot I'll need all the feedback I can get.
Oh well remember one of the original dudes that was desparate for video and stuff like this for working on the GS ... was an old friend of mine called Srileo ... he wants one copy ... now I made myself a couple of copies but cant open it ... I might send them down to him and let him figure out.
Cool.
Srinath.
The video wasn't in a DivX / XVid format was it? If so Srinath would need to go download the encoders.
Its been about a month since I watched the video and I can't remember how it was recorded, but those symptoms are typical of not having the right video encoders...
OK I am going to have to run now ... however please let me know where the drivers are ... I'll get myself some when I get back.
Cool.
Srinath.
Quote from: JCHThe video wasn't in a DivX / XVid format was it?
It's a .WMV file. I just told the rendering program (Ulead something or other ... this was before I got Pinnacle Studio Plus) to save in Windows Media format.
OK so what do I do now ... anyone ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Rema1000 wrote to remind me that a WMV file is just a "container" ... that it can still host several different formats. Or rather, that its contents can be encoded using one of umpteen different codecs.
As far as I can remember, I told Ulead to use the MPEG4 format for output. So, if anyone knows how to go about finding/installing an MPEG4 codec....
OK installed mindoze media player ... and it works.
Cool.
Srinath.
so who has the kit(s) now??
i havent heard anything or seen anything of them...
waiting
chris<pixelmonkey>:D
Xtalman should have got it or be getting it very soon, I sent mine out almost a week ago.
Cool.
Srinath.
I just received Srinath's kit yesterday, watched Kerry's video last night. I'm going to try to perform the valve adjustment today.
Rema1000, PM me your address.
I sent out Kerry's kit to Jeff P over a week ago, he should have it now. :-)
Okay, I checked my valves today. Three were too tight (both intake and right exhaust). I was able to change the right exhaust from a 2.65 to a 2.60 and got the proper clearance. However, the two intake shims are 2.60 and there weren't any smaller ones in Srinath's kit. So, I'm going to hold on to Srinath's kit until I get some 2.55 or 2.50s to replace them.
Anyone know of a good source for shims? My local dealer takes over a week to get Suzuki OEM parts, and charges full price. I need two shims smaller than 2.60.
try a local triumph or BMW dealer, they usually have a onsite or close repair shop that stocks shims. I have found that they are the most friendly overall with riders of other brands, and you should be able to get them for like $5 a piece.

Yea we swapped the thin stuff with Kerry's kit I think. My kit has thick ones, 260 and up in plenty and pretty poor on the thin ones. How about you measure the ones you pulled out and measure the 260's I have and put the thinnest ones in. The 260 is just a number, they wear albeit slowly and usually 258 or 257 is common among 260's.
Cool.
Srinath.
Yup I recieved the kit last Thursday. I should have my bike done by Monday, so I'll send it along to pixelmonkey once I'm finished.
jeff
If you can't find a local source, MrCycles (http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_category.asp) has shims for $7.97.
BTW ... since those valves are tight, do you know HOW tight they are? (See the TOO TIGHT section on my Valve Shim Selection Chart (http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/ValveAdjustmentVideo/GS500_Valve_Shim_Selection_Chart.gif).)
Hopefully someone who uses Srinath's kit will pony up for a thin "test shim" (say, 2.30mm) for just such occasions.

Yeah, I used your digital calipers to measure them. I was kind of in a rush because I was running out of daylight, but there wasn't anything smaller than the shims I already had in there.

No, I have no idea how tight they really are. Rema1000 and I were discussing replenishing Srinath's kit with thinner shims. Tomorrow, I will check with another local place (referred to me by the local Triumph/BMW dealer, thanks davipu!) on pricing and availability. Unfortunately, that place and the Suzuki dealer were closed today.
Okay, rechecked the valve clearances again today once I purchased a few thinner shims. Looks like I need two 2.55 shims, but none are available locally. Rema1000 is purchasing some of these shims to contribute to the kit, so we'll replenish some of the thinner shims that seem to be so popular.
Shims in Srinath's kit:
4x 2.60
1x 2.65
2x 2.70
1x 2.72
1x 2.80
To this kit I have added:
2x 2.45
2x 2.50
Oddly I am over 260, the thinnest shim in my 89 is a 260. They have all moved from 250-270 to 260-275. Basically no wear on the cams ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Xtalman, who is on the list for Srinath's kit next? I'd like to get it again since I'm still a little tight with 255 and 260s in mine.
Where would this put me in line for Srinath's kit?
Thanks!

joerocker,
I will keep it until I get two 2.55 shims, then I'll send it to Rema1000. After that, I believe you would be next in line.
It will take at least until next week before I receive the 2.55 shims. Nobody local has any in that size. Expect at least two to three weeks before you receive the kit.
Ok I solved my problem from the other post (stuck valve cover) but now have a "problem" I could use some input on. My bike's a '96 with 10,500 miles. I've had it since 6,000 and have never checked the valves. Don't know if it was ever done before.
Anyway, all 4 of the valves were tighter than the .04 shim in Kerry's kit, but I could pretty easily rotate the shim with my finger on all of them. According to Kerry's commentary, that probably means they're ok. I swapped out the left intake shim (a 265) for a 255 (actually measured 2.58 ) from the kit, which was the next smallest. Now it was too loose for the .08 shim. I put the 265 back in and it was back to how it was before.
So should I just feel fortunate that they're all still good, or do you think maybe I did something incorrectly?
jeff
With the 255 shim in you probably had about .10 mm of clearance, which makes sense.
.02 or .03 existing clearance, plus 2.65-2.58 (.07 shim thickness difference) = .09 or .10mm clearance.[/list:u]I'll bet a 260 shim would be
perfect.
But yeah - for now you're probably OK. Just don't let it go too long before your next checkup. :)

My 89's first valve adjustment was at 15K ... usually 10-15K+ is possible ... Think about this ... in 47K I have moved an average of 3 shim sizes on all valves ... whihc works to ~ one size on all 4 in 15K ... assuming they all wear equally whihc is almost the case ... BTW I have only put thicker shims in ... never had to go thinner ... so no idea what that might be if yours is getting thinner ...
Cool.
Srinath.
I've wondered the same thing... With things wearing and the way the valves are set up, you'd think we'd ALL need thicker not thinner shims. All mine were (and still are) too tight.
bump...
get r' done jeff?
chris<pixelmonkey>:D
Yeah Chris I gave everything a re-check to make sure I didn't do something too stupid. It'll be in the mail tomorrow!
jeff
Srinath's kit is now on its way to Rema1000. In addition to the shims I added to the kit, Rema1000 contributed several more, 2.55 and smaller, including a 2.15(?) mm test shim. The kit should now have a fairly complete range of shims.
Thanks for sending this kit around, my bike runs smoooooth now! Awesome DVD too Kerry.
And I believe I'm after Rema1000. I'll add my shims too...
Srinath's kit sent to Joerocker today. Contents:
21 shims (I added 6); I think it has at least one of everything from 240 to 275 (but that probably won't last too long)
allen wrench
digital caliper
feeler gauge set
Motion Pro tool
screwdriver
CD Rom with Kerry's video
...I think that's it (this is from memory). It might help if we do a shim-swap between the two kits to distribute the sizes better. If the kits make it around enough for the demand to slack-off, then they might even be combined, as the shim selection is really what makes the kit "better than the dealer".
Also, if anyone wants to "thank" the group, you could buy the "ELORA German Thin Blade Metric Feeler Gauge" ($20 shipped from Samstag Sales) before the kit gets to you, and leave the gauge in the kit when you're done (after all, you probably wouldn't need it again for a year anyways).

You forgot about the tweezers (and the rubber band and the tissue  )
Another thing that would be nice to have is a telescoping magnet to pull out the valve shims once the valve tool was used. I had trouble with the tweezers, and only bought a magnet after I had finished with the kit. $2.99 at Autozone.

Hey Chris. I sent it off on the 3rd or 4th, so you should be getting it anytime now. If it's not there in a few days lemme know and I'll see if the post office can give any insight.
jeff
What's the most recen line up fr the kits? I am in MD and need to get into the rotation.
Per http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=120585#120585 , it looks to me like:
Kerry's kit:
done: Flash, davipu, Mk1inCali(&Daniely), Eisenfaust
now: Jeff P (done, sent 2/4 to Pixelmonkey)
next: Pixelmonkey, JCH
Srinath's kit:
done: Se7enty7, Stephen072774, raceratb, Joerocker, Srinath, xtalman
now: Rema1000 (done, sent 2/11 to joerocker)
next: joerocker, ConanLloyd
If you add your name to the list, it would be helpful to repost the full list of "next person" in your post... so that the next person doesn't need to search back 3 pages to see who is waiting.
(EDIT: updated the list of recipients, as-of 2/15)
I'll sent SS's kit to you when I'm done with it. Haven't gotten it yet.
Thanks guys. Send me a pm when you're ready. No rush, I still need to sort out the key situation first.
Actually... the more recent for Kerry's would have been here I think...

I'm on Kerry's list after chris. :)
Also, chris, can you take inventory of what's currently in Kerry's kit? I may buy and add some shims.
will do when it comes in.

got it this morning!
doing inventory later today and should have some info posted before 4pm CST.
the box looks like it could use some attention, so i might add a roll of duct tape to it before shipping it out.
My plan...finish all three bikes as quickly as possible! guess this means no woman searching over the weekend :x BUT thats ok, because the weather for sunday will be sunny and close to 70! a ride to OKC and back is planned, and FINALLY sand blasting that exhaust like i've been meaning to!
WILL KEEP YA POSTED!

Don't rush on my behalf; I'm the last person on the list and definetely won't be able to do this next weekend. Go search for some women!

i'm off to tear down the other 2 bikes to see what they have, what i can swap with, and what shims will need to be ordered. *maybe if i'm luckey they'll have them in stock!

is kerry's valve kit still in west coast? i like to be next in line...asked a stealer whether valve clearance check/adjustment is included in their $150" tune up"...valve clearance check "OK"..adjustment different thing "135 + parts" :bs: ...hopefully i dont screw up and make their estimate more practical :dunno:
you won't. just watch the video and ask questons if you have any.
I still have Kerry's. Info above is accurate. As mentioned above, take notes and watch the vid, all will go smoothly. Unfortunately I have to do it twice since there was no 2.55 shim in the kit. situation fixed, just need to break the bike down again.
I would like to jump in line next for either kit, it's time.
Update on Kerry's Kit, Hairball won't be needing it, so I'll be sending it straight to davipu
May this humble fat man please get in line for the East Coast valve kit?

I haven't received it yet....I expect it shortly. Depending on the weather, I will need about 2 weeks max.

Its en route to davipu as of this morning :( Bummer.
Where do you live in LA? I can help you out when the kit comes back around.
I am in the valley, in North Hollywood. I'm hoping a valve adjustment can help cure my crappy gas mileage woes...i'm getting in the neighborhood of 40-45mpg...thought I should be closer to 50ish.
so the list is gettin pretty long.. but i'll take a spot in line and maybe i'll get it by october. :dunno:

I have it now.......looks good for giving it a go this weekend......one question....after watching the video again and looking at the suzuki shop manual that I have, the position that the lobes should be in to check the clearance seems to be different with the video showing 180 degrees away but in line with the valve and the manual showing pointing straight up or another position that looks parallel to the top surface of the head. Any thoughts?
Wayne
as long as the lobe it's self isn't applying pressure to the shim you can measure the clearance, although it if is close to whare it almost touches there is a possibilty that you get tight readings with the feeler gauge
Quote from: spotswood_suzukiafter watching the video again and looking at the suzuki shop manual that I have, the position that the lobes should be in to check the clearance seems to be different with the video showing 180 degrees away but in line with the valve and the manual showing pointing straight up or another position that looks parallel to the top surface of the head. I just saw a similar diagram in the Clymer manual yesterday or the day before. Surprise!
The accompanying text went so far as to say that if you adjusted the clearance in any other position it might result in damage to the engine. I don't know that I would go
that far, but pointing the lobe straight up has got to be easier than eyeballing the 180-degree position that I suggest in the video.
Then straight up it is :thumb: ......and if all goes well, on the rocks later  !

HELP!!...the valve cover is stuck on like glue....tried giving it a few taps to loosen, but it isn't moving. I really don't want to start prying with tool...going to take an hour or so break, so quick replies are requested or else I will do the other things I had planned...change the choke cable, clean the air filter and put everything back together.

I used a socket wrench. I removed the bolts from the valve cover, and found a socket that fit the hole perfectly. I attached a socket wrench to the socket and lifted up, prying the cover off. Give it a shot, maybe it'll work for you.
Just don't loose the socket while you're prying it up. It's a very long way to the bottom of the cam-chain well.
Derek
I was needing to use the east coast kit
Please put me on the list :thumb:
Please PM Me when you need my address
please add me to the list as well.
i'm in GA, so i guess east coast, although i doubt it really matters postage-wise :)
p.s. - is there an actual list, or do the people currently in possession just check this thread?
I got it yesterday i think. So sorry I didn't do the other one just yet. OK I'll send it out monday to rayLarrabee ...
Cool.
Srinath.
RayLarabee - send me your address please.
And a small comment about the feeler guages ...
Do not take them out by unscrewing the end collar ... I saw that they were in the wrong order ... The guages go thinnest to thickest, except the last one ... aka the thickest one is in front of the thinnest to protect it from being torn up by the U shaped housing ... So Do not open and the order is that and its suposed to be that way.
Cool.
Srinath.
Hi, folks !!
I also need a valve adjustment.
I only read the 1st page of the thread, and if I understand corectly, one is to receive it in the mail and include the used shims in the package and send it off to the next person ?
But whom do we pay ?
How long is the waiting list ?
:dunno:
Help, please !
You don't pay. You just pay the shipping when you send it to the next person
wait, just to be sure, my post at the top of page 11 counts as a reserved spot right?
So east coast Kit is ...
Me, then raylarrabee (respond by tommorow or get bumped), weaselnoz, and dnorwoo ... sound right ...
And we can decide to bump 1 spot till response ... or to bottom or out of the list ... we should decide - My choice will be ... 1 spot. but we dont want that practice getting out of hand. So its 1 spot for now, further study is recomemded. Serial offenders need not apply ???
Cool.
Srinath.
srinath, I pm'd you my address. Sorry for holding you up :thumb:
juuuuuuust made it :)
whats the average time between people? i just want to know when to expect it.. im after raylarrabee correct?
back to the first page bump
got the kit last night. I should be able to send it back out either Saturday or monday (at the latest) barring any serious setbacks. Gotta turn in my last law school paper on Friday so I can graduate :thumb:
ey raylarrabee... what do you think the chances are of you and i catchin up with each other on Sunday and doing our valves together? I'm a little... ok quite unsure about attempting this on my own. If you for whatever reason cannot, then maybe i could just pick the kit up from you and save you on shipping...
edit - just saw page 11 and all waiting for the kit... didn't mean to be rude :) . So ray... if we can get together whenever you are going to do your valves then great if not, then i'll make other arrangements.
should we let him in?! haha nah im jk. so ray u need my address or what? wait.. i am next right?
WCK (west coast kit) update, was mailed to scooter monday, should be there tomarrow at the latest
Okay how do I get my hands on this kit?
Thanks
yeah, hopefully it will be here today, or friday..I have a whole weekend open and waiting to do this job...Incidentally, if there is anyone else in LA who is looking to do this, maybe we could do a twofer this weekend..I'm in North Hollywood, gonna be doing this in the parking garage under my apt building...yee-haa. :guns:
Hey scootr9718 Can you tell me if anyone is in front of me waiting for this kit? I would love to get my hands on it soon.
Thanks
well firts you get a few posts,
and second?
second you call ITT teck.
kit made it here today took a week from oregon to southern cali...I plan on doing this job tomorrow, so unless focer is back on the list, then after me its up for grabs...
(side note-KERRY, the DVD was great, but it has a few scratches on it, which make it skip a bit in two different places...I cleaned it best I could, but just to know-everybody be careful with the DVD)
Quote from: scootr9718the [CD ...] has a few scratches on it, which make it skip a bit in two different places...I cleaned it best I could, but just to know-everybody be careful with the [CD])
I would be happy to send a new CD (with a few extra files and an accompanying sheet) to whoever will have the kit next week. This goes for the "East Coast Kit" too.
Feel free to make a copy, folks! :thumb:
edit: i accidently edited this reply instead of posting... there was nothing important here anyway
ok quick question. will i need anything in addition to the kit? like gaskets or anything? just want to know so i have everything when i get the kit so i can pass it off quickly..
Not unless you tear your valve cover gasket up taking it off, but you shouldn't have any trouble getting it off.
ok so its not a mandatory replacement thing... goood.
OK, I'm finished using the kit...who wants it next? ON a side note...don't loosen the u bracket holding the exhaust camshaft in place to get the tool to fit...cause you might over torque the bolt and break it off in the head...then you might have to take the bike to a mechanic to pull it out...
but at least your valves will be in spec :thumb:
So who wants the kit next..looks like it might be a good idea to ship the west coast kit over to you east coast guys...
it's weaselnoze, then dnorwoo, then me :)
if the first two don't respond, i'll pm you my addy :)
well i thought i was waiting on the kit from raylarrabee. he must have skipped town with it . no but seriously where are u man? u better be workin on ur bike at least! lol
and i'll ask once more before i get the kit, just to be sure. i dont have to purchase anything to do the adjustment? if so i want to get it now so i can turn the kit over ASAP!!! please let me know if there is anything i need!
You shouldn't need any special tools, but you may need to buy one or more shims. (Or not.) Unfortunately, you won't know the sizes you need until you use the feeler gauges to determine your current clearances, and then pull each out-of-spec shim and find out how thick it is.
As far as "regular" tools:
* Socket set with short extension bar (for the side plastics, fuel tank and breather cover)
* Thinnish flat blade screwdriver (for turning off the fuel petcock, the longer the better)
* Pliers (for fuel hose clamps)
* 6mm Allen wrench for removing the valve cover
* 18mm wrench for removing the spark plugs[/list:u]Did I forget anything?
ok good. i have all the tools i should need minus whatever may be in the kit...
are shims universal from bike to bike? i ask because they dont really carry gs500 parts at the dealer.. if shims are just shims then they should have them
As long as they are 29.5mm in diameter, flat, and wafer-shaped they'll work. I'm pretty sure that a lot of Suzuki bikes use 'em. I couldn't say about other makes.
I haven't been able to get my valves done yet. Exams, my grad paper, a new nephew (LATE Saturday night) have soaked up all the time I thought I would have to do the valves. I will get it done tomorrow and send it either overnight or 2nd day air.
I really apologize for the delay, I know I'm holding you up. I got the kit at exactly the wrong time.
Anyway, Weazelnose, you will have it Monday/tuesday. Again, I'm really sorry for holding tup the works,
you dont have to rush it! save the money for ur bike. i can be patient. u got my PM with my address right?
yeah, got your address. I'll get it done and send the kit out ASAP :thumb:
side note: 29.5 shims were the standard size Japenese import shim for a while so all four makers used them, in Jax the only place that stocked them was Backroads Triumph/BMW/Moto-Guzzi.
whoever has the east coast kit, or is going to get it next, I have a 2.15 test shim for ya, pm address for whare it needs to be to get into the kit.
Cool I get the kit after nisus1
ok, so if weaselnoze is getting the east coast kit from raylarrabee, then next in line is
Next: dnorwoo (?)
Next: crash (GA)
Next: Gioro_T (Toronto)
Next: nisus1 (unless he hooked up with raylarrabee) (VA)
Next: Altruism111 (FL)
So, whomever PMs me with address, I can send out the west coast kit since no one out here seems to need it right now... :thumb:
I'm still in... if anything changes i'll post back.
Thanx...
<bump> Possible to make this a sticky?
UPDATE: West Coast Kit mailed out today to crash in GA...
So the East and West coast kits are coming to the East coast?
ha ha my kit is the best it has all that stuff and stays in my tool box. see ya.
haha my kit is better, it was free.
weaselnoze, the kit is on its way to you. Sent it out Priority Mail today--should be there in 2-3 days. I'll PM you the tracking no. if you want it.
FYI, there is a shortage of shims that are <250 thick.
I just realized that I forgot to slip the CD w/Kerry's how-to video in with the kit. I will overnight it to weaselnoze--that way it will get to you at or before the kit arrives.
i got the kit in the mail today. hopefully i will get everything done tomorow and ship it out.
i just watched the video and, first off, thank you Kerry! if a picture is worth a thousand words, the vid is priceless :) secondly, Kerry's bike is <01, so some stuff is different (like the seat/side covers). am i correct in assuming that all the important stuff is the same for 2001+ bikes?
thirdly, to try out the callipers, i tested the "test shim". the label says 2.15, but i measured closer to 2.14. can someone confirm or deny this?

I'm not sure which kit you have, but do you get a measurement of
0.00mm when you close the caliper with nothing between the jaws? Mechanical dial calipers have a screw on top of the dial that you loosen, so that you can turn the faceplate and zero out the reading. Srinath's digital version should have some sort of RESET button.
Always apply a consistent amount of force when closing the jaws - both when you zero the instrument and when you measure the shim thickness.
it's your kit, Kerry, and i have zeroed it
Hmmmmm. :dunno:
ditto what Crash said: the video was exceptionally helpfull. I felt a bond with our riend from Utah when I "clicked" the cam follower about 50 times before I got the valve tool seated right.
My biggest problem was getting the cam lobes into the correct position by turning the wheel. at a certain point just before they got to where I wanted (for the exhaust valves) they would kind of "fall" over another 10-20 degrees. Took some subtile tapping on the back wheel to nudge them into the right place w/o going past.
speaking of cam lobes. i could've sworn that there was a discussion somewhere about the cam lobe positions in the video being opposite to what clymer says. am i daydreaming?
Nope, you're right. Apparently the "safest" position is to have the lobe pointing straight up rather than directly away from the shim.

Just one of the many tweaks I'll include if I ever remake the video from scratch.
But I have a hard time understanding how the position described in the video could "result in ... possible engine damage" :?
quick question.
of the 6 bolts holding the head cover, the 4 big ones have o-rings. are the 2 smaller/longer ones supposed to have o-rings? because mine don't =/
ok, i'm done.
whoever wants Kerry's kit, with a fancy new 2.62 shim, PM me your address.
Quote from: crashof the 6 bolts holding the head cover, the 4 big ones have o-rings. are the 2 smaller/longer ones supposed to have o-rings?
Sounds like you already figured it out, but NO.
btw, i wanted to post a word of (dumbass) wisdom.
if you follow Kerry's advice and stuff a rag into the hole in the middle of the case, be very careful when rotating the engine, as the rag may become caught in the chain/sproket, or under a cam =/
Gioro still in line??? If not, Crash, i sent you a PM with my address....
recieved the kit today. didnt get the CD yet, so i will wait unless kerry wants to give me a link...PLEASE!!!
the compressed video (which i was not able to play) is ~600MB. there is a torrent link somewhere up this thread (if it's still up)
the DVD is a good 3-4G, so no sending that one... wait for the mail :)
Someone made a DVD out of the WMV file? :dunno:
weaselnoze ... PM me your address and I will send you a new CD to toss in the toolkit.
Yep, Kerry the West Coast Kit has two discs in it, one is a dvd with your video on it, one is a CD-R with the WMV file on it...if you recall I was concerned with skipping, that was on the DVD....some helpful person converted it.
(By the way, my bike didn't have any o-rings on it...but it's never leaked, so I left well enough alone)
Kerry - don't send a new CD. I am sending the CD out overnight to Weaselnoze. It was in my laptp and I forgot to slip it into the box when I mailed him the kit. No reason for you to spend any money sending one out when it was my mistake.
weaselnoze, you'll have it tomorrow.
ya i told kerry that he didnt need to send another one.
Alright fellas so who has which kit now?
i have east coast...
crash has sent the west coast kit out to me... should be here tomorrow or monday. Altruism is next, but Weaselnoze will most likely be done before me. No one else is in line so far... any other takers?
Just hit 100 posts! Feels like my birthday! I'm all growds up!
hmm i havent recieved the CD yet ray. what day and via what method did u send?
FedEx. Sent today (friday) morning. I confirmed that they have Saturday delivery for your ZIP. Should be at your house tomorrow (Sat) am.
hey thanks! hope it didnt cost too much... :dunno:
fed ex came with my bars but no CD. idk man
I don't understand why it didn't get to you this morning. I sent it out Friday, priority overnight, with Saturday delivery. It should have gotten you to guarenteed before noon--I'm very sorry that it did not come as planned; I tried my best to get it to you this morning so you could use it.

very sorry about the mix-up. Hopefully FedEx will at least give me my money back.

I think you were last on the list. I'll take the kit next. I've bought like 3 or 4 shims and will add what I don't use to the kit, as well as swapping for what I may need. PMing you now
Sorry I was after weaselnoze.
I think crash is after me.
8)
dnorwoo probably should be next, but to clarify... dnorwoo you haven't posted in over a month and got skipped. Crash has already done his, so have i, Gioro got skipped for lack of response. Altruism has the west coast kit and Weaselnoze has East Coast kit now.
So the list is...
Dnorwoo (next)
Cheesy
...that's it right?
I confirmed with weaselnose and did not feel he needed a reminder.
I hope I will not get skipped I have been waiting a long time.
I am sorry I did not post sooner.
:thumb:
ok guys i hadda go back and read my PMs. dnorwoo did send me a PM on the 2nd. i think he deserves the kit next. my apologies to cheesy for the false hope. i've been pretty busy all week and havent been able to get to it. saturday is going to be the day for sure. i'll send it to you dnorwoo asap.
PM who ever needs the kit next.
OK
I'm about to PM dnorowo
edit:
it looks like altruism has the kit and there's noone after him, so I've pm'd him not dnorowo
oh yea i forgot! the east coast kit is now en route to dnorowo as of monday! let us know when u get it!
So whose kit is closest to the west coast now? Can I get next in line for one of them?
I sent the West Coast kit off to cheesy today.
I'd like to get in line somewhere, whenever it starts heading towards the midwest.
Hey, and then you could DELIVER it to Ontario! On your bike, of course.
Oh man, I wish
I have not gotten it yet, but I am looking forward to doing the much needed maintenance.
I've got good vibrations today.
I finished my valves on sunday, and spent some time this morning organizing kerry's kit. Someone (kerry?) had a plastic box with each little section inside neatly labeled. When I got the kit everything was mixed up.
I was disturbed to see a section labeled "2.40 test shim" yet there was no shim in the section.
Noone could have used that shim for their bike. I am hoping that kerry didn't send it with the kit, because this whole system relies on trust.
I'm going to order another test shim to keep the kit going.. but keep in mind: When you ride a bike, bad karma is NOT something you want following you.
I got your PM cheesy and I'll be looking for it in the mail. Is there somebody on the list after me already or anybody on the westcoast who needs this anymore?
Bill
My kit did not originally include a labeled plastic box for shims. I think I just tossed them all into a baggie or something. What you see (plus a CD) is what I sent out:
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbburma.net%2FMiscFotos%2F100_1983_ValveToolPackage.jpg&hash=5c2b93ca60496e68858f7ab77f6338e95c1f444d)
The ground-down test shim that I used in the video was actually thinner than 2.40mm - it was the thinnest one you can buy, at 2.15mm. It is entirely possibly that someone needed a 2.40 to adjust their bike.
I believe I did include the 2.15 test shim (furthest left in the photo) in the kit that I sent. But are you sure that you have my kit and not Srinath's?
there is a small shim (that is actually much smaller in diameter than the other shims... maybe that is the test shim??
This is yours... because it has the dial calipers (albeit without the cardboard box outer sheath... they are just in a plastic black box... whereas srinath's has digital calipers.
Also, there is no gasket sealant.
and, there is a piece of paper that is a printout of a shim chart...
Quote from: cheesythere is a small shim (that is actually much smaller in diameter than the other shims... maybe that is the test shim??
Yep, that would be the 2.15mm one. It should be the thinnest one in the kit.
richard went a little overboard when grinding the diameter down. We were just trying to make sure that any oil under the shim would be able to escape and not mess up the measurement.
I would expect the gasket sealant to be long gone by now, if folks have been using it.
No worries! :)

okay... well that makes me feel much better!
Also, there are many more shims than in your pic.. I'd guess and say 15... lots in the 2.55-2.75 range
kit sent to billdapart this morning...
I am getting a 275 shim from the dealer :x then I should be done.
Who is next?
PM Me
I'm in line, but I don't know where exactly.
Received the kit this morning. I will try and get this done tonight or tomorrow and get it sent out early this week. I'll send it to Queball if he hasn't been sent to yet, otherwise...anybody else?
Kerry- I'll throw in some gasket sealant (on my way to auto parts store right now for a bulb anyway)
Bill
Need to get on the list for the east coast kit! Not sure where exactly the detailed list of signup order is being kept.
FYI, I'm in Ohio
So I hit a block of sorts..(i think this happened before as well)
All the shims in the box are too big for my intake valves and the local stealership has already taken a week to produce no shims (how can that even be possible) so I may have to revert to grinding down one or two of the gargantuan shims that are in there. (or just mine) Either way, I'll have this kit sent out late this week. Sorry for the delay guys.
Bill
Hey, could I be put on the list again? I think the new motor I've got needs an adjusting. -_-
Since I helped to put together the original kit, think maybe I could borrow it next time it gets sent back to Kerry? (he lives around the corner, so it's not hard to grab when it's local =]) My engine is starting to rattle, and I think I have a shim that's a little too small.
=]
Glad to see it's been used, though.
Richard
Perfect! That way I can give my kit the once-over without having to pay any postage...
PS: richard, I have non-metric "duplicates" of the tools ... but only 1 extra shim. I rechecked my clearances 2 or 3 weeks ago, and luckily they were all acceptable.
that would probably work fine... my clearances, I think, are too big, not too small, so non-metric should narrow it down enough.
One of these days I'll have to find time to do it.
Where are the kits currently? I have not gotten any replies from dnorwoo to my PMs, and as far as I can tell he's the last one to have the east coast kit.
Think I was getting a kit from buildapart when he gets his shim situation ironed out. That is unless someone had dibs before me.
Well I finally did get the shims from the stealership. I finished my valves late yesterday. The kit has been boxed up and it's ready for shipping tomorrow morning to Queball.
Queball let me know if you'd rather I sent the kit to Kerry first. If his buddy has some smaller shims it might help you out when you get it. Either way is fine, but if Kerry would like his kit back...we should definitely make sure he sees it soon.
THanks again for this awesomeness mooderator  :thumb:
I'd like to take my chances with what is there because I don't think my valves have ever been adjusted on this bike and I need to get it done. It makes noise above 6000rpm and so I haven't run my bike above 5 grand for awhile. I have some mods to do to the bike but I'm waiting on the valves because I want the peace of mind that they are right.
I'd like the east coast kit next. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it goes from Queball - Kerry - Jazzzz? - Me.
Hi!
Can I get on the list for the west coast kit?
Thanks!!
pandy
ok im back on the list again for the east coast kit i guess..
I am sorry I have not sent the kit yet, but my brother passed away and I have been busy with funeral arrangements. I will send the kit this week.
The east coast kit goes to Jazz right? :dunno:
If you think otherwise speak up before I send it Wednesday.
Ok,
Kit was finally sent this afternoon next day to queball.
Sorry for the delay guys, I was held up having unexpected surgery on my foot.
Thanks again for the kit Kerry Guru Man.
I got the kit today from bildapart. Thanks. I'm going try to find some time to work on it tonight. As far as I know it goes to Ry_Guy next.
Could I please get the West Coast kit next? I'm sorry, but I am not sure what else I need to do in order to get it.
If I need to give more info, please PM me.
Dave
I'm done with the kit. Ry_Guy I think is next.
The video was great, saved me lots of time. Thanks Kerry.
The problem now is that there are a bunch of 2.65 shims, and nothing under until 2.40. I got lucky and was able to find a proper shim. The next guy may not get so lucky.
East coast kit arrived today, I will be doing the valve job by Friday afternoon. Who's up next?
Is this the west coast kit?
Ry_Guy
Kerry
pandy ?
Feel free to make corrections. I'm not trying to cut in line.
Thanks!

I asked to get on the west coast list a few posts ago...could I please be removed? I have heard from a few people that doing the valves at 600 miles isn't usually necessary.
I'll repost when I am actually ready.
Thanks,
Dave
Sent a kit to Ry_Guy today.
who's next on the east coast.
I received the west coast kit today. Next in line is Kerry, then pandy.
unless there's an objection somewhere, the east coast kit goes to weaselnoze next
Could I get in the line for the Kit? Thanks,
Nate
hey man hows the kit comin along?
sorry bro, I keep forgetting to box the thing back up and get it sent out to you - I'll put it in the mail today, priority
can i get put on the list for the valve adjustment kit? do i need to give an address? also where do i get new shims if i need them?
I'd say that you just put yourself on the East Coast kit list, behind
weaselnoze. :)
SHIMS: The tricky part is that you won't know what size(s) you need until you measure the clearances and, for each out-of-spec valve, the thickness of the current shim.
Once you know what you need (don't forget about swapping shims from one valve to another if you can!) you have several options:
* Use shim(s) included in the toolkit. (By now, the ones in there tend to be too thick, especially for high-mileage bikes. :x )
* Order them from your local dealer ( :nono: ) See the Suzuki part numbers
HERE (http://gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=123644#123644).
* Order them from one of the big online dealers (http://www.bbburma.net/Documents/GS500_Parts_Fiche_1.html). Look in the CAMSHAFT - VALVE section for any model year. These dealers
except BikeBandit use genuine Suzuki part numbers. (
MrCycles was the cheapest the last time I checked.)
* Order them from CYCLE-RE-CYCLE (http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/valve_shims.htm) for the unbeatable price of $4.95 each, assuming you don't need one thinner than 2.30mm. :thumb: [/list:u]
Wasn't natedawg next after weaselnoze?
Kick me if I'm wrong.

Pandy, I believe you are in line after me for the West Coast kit? PM me your address and I will try to send it out in the next day or two.
YAY!!!
PM sent.
Thanks!!!

Quote from: calvert0014about how will it take to get to me?
however long weaselnoze and natedawg have it - hopefully they're better about remembering to send it out than I was :( I am a bad monkey
cool guys just let me know who I need tp pm or pm me and I will supply my address. And make the adjustment ASAP so the kit can be on it merry way to its next victim.
what symptoms would tou have with a bike that needs its valves adjusted?
Quote from: calvert0014what symptoms would tou have with a bike that needs its valves adjusted?
Sometimes it runs like crap, is hard to start etc. Other times it runs just fine until it burns a valve and you have major damage. They are easy to check - all you need is feeler gauges and a few wrenches. They can be a bit of a pain to adjust the first time - but the directions in the Chilton manual are good and the Motion Pro tool to depress the bucket is cheap through J C Whitney. Shims (once you know what sizes you need) are only a couple bucks each at the dealer.
pandy, Kerry says he'll do it tomorrow (29th).
Thanks!!!
pandy
Ummm  and now Kerry's wondering if you could wait for one more day.
I want to redo the packaging so its more compact, but still sturdy. I'll "pay you back" by tossing in an electronic caliper to replace the quirky dual-pointer English/Metric mechanical one.
Deal?
What will you toss in if I give you a week!? :P
No worries! I appreciate it whenever I get it!!
Thanks!!

hey Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! believe me, im in no rush to get the kit. cant even ride right this moment, but what was the date u sent it out? im just wondering why i havent seen it yet :dunno:
So if everyone is cool, I'm next in line after calivert?
Pandy should receive the new-and-improved West Coast kit any minute now. Here's what's in it:
(https://gstwins.com/gsboard/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbburma.net%2FMiscFotos%2FCX7530_0214_NewValveToolkitContents.jpg&hash=88a832837d9d8d1b13aae7017dec4f34c57aa712)
The kit now includes digital calipers rather than the dual-dial "mechanical" ones. And a
clean copy of the shim selection chart. As far as donations, someone:
* Gave up their own copy of the video on CD :thumb:
* Replaced the original tube of gasket sealant. :thumb:
* Tossed in three small
M5 .08 x 12mm screws. To replace stripped oil filter cover studs, maybe? :dunno:
* Added a 7/32" Allen wrench :dunno:
* Included a larger precision screwdriver. Guess they didn't want to snap my teeny one on a stubborn shim?[/list:u]Here is the current list of included shim sizes:
* 2.15 "last resort" test shim (1)
* 2.40 test shim (1)
* 2.65 (6)
* 2.68 (1)
* 2.70 (2)
* 2.75 (1)
* 2.85 :o (1)[/list:u]
just got the east coast kit today in its nice new packaging. i'll try and get it done this weekend and send it out. next in line PM me with address plz
weaselnoze (and others in line for the east coast kit) - I am terribly sorry for the delay in getting the damned thing shipped out. I gave it to my wife to drop off at the post office over a week ago and it has been riding around in her trunk ever since. The box it was in got smashed up a bit, so I had to re-pack it. All of the tools and shims and the CD should be there and in good condition.
I just received the West Coast kit, beautifully packed. :) :) :)
The CD is amazing. Kerry, you're the Julia Childs of the GS world!!! ;)
Thanks for sending!! I'll try to do the valves this weekend, but we're going out of town (late anniversary celebration  ), so it might not be until the following weekend.
Whoever's next on the West Coast list (is there anyone?), PM me, and I'll ship it off to you next.
Thanks again, Kerry!!!!!!
panty <---that's Srinath's fault :P
hows that east coast kit commin?
whoever is considered last, I can sure use this kit afterwards. Please let me know when you're done. I can PM my address
thanks
Hey weaselnoze i was wondering if you got my PM or if somebody beat me to it.
Looks like I'm after you, Aerospike
whenever you get the kit, just let me know when you're done. Or I can PM you my address.
thanks
JunaryBunch,
I live in Fairfax city, so I'm thinking we could meet somewhere halfway instead of shipping, or if you want we could work on the bikes together and get done quicker. Do you have a garage?
On a different note, how's the east coast kit coming? Who has it now?
Just sent you a PM - so whenever you or I get the kit, we can contact each other.
So pandy ... how did the weekend wrenching session go? Did you achieve "valve adjustment nirvana"? 8)
Are you waiting on some replacement shims, perhaps?
Wait a sec -- you got a "new" bike over the weekend. Never mind; forget I asked. :)
 Yeah, the "new" bike was quite a trek to get, so we didn't have much juice left to attack the valves. Fortunately, there's no one else on the west coast list, or I'd have just sent the kit on and put myself on the list again. We're aiming for next Saturday now (I didn't want to tear my bike down yesterday and then not have it to commute this week....I'm spoiled with commuting on two wheels now).

Sanjay PM'd me for the west coast kit. I don't think there's anyone else on the west coast list, is there?
If not, then I'll send him the kit after this weekend's wrenching! :thumb:
pandy
OK!! I think the valves are adjusted! I can't take much of the credit, though. Have I mentioned that I have the best boyfriend in the world??? The video really is killer, though, so I *could* have done it if I needed to.... But I was the assistant. ;) (I have no doubt that he'll hand me the tools next time ;) ). I was fortunate that an almost-local bike shop had shims in stock, so I made a shim run while my boyfriend installed the alarm I'd purchased recently. There were quite a few 2.65 shims in the kit, and now I've added another :P ...popular size! ;) I *did* do *some* of the wrenching... :dunno: So now I can add valve adjusting to my short list of know-how! :thumb:
Now just to figure out that little oil leak that seems to be getting worse. :x
So, I expect that the test ride we take tomorrow will allow me to mail the kit off to Sanjay on Tuesday, so PM me your address, Sanjay.
Thanks again for the kit, Kerry!
pandy
P.S. After the adjustment, he started right up and sounds good to me! Can't wait for tomorrow morning's ride!!!!
Update: Nice test ride. He's running well. Heck, he has almost as much power as a gixxer 600 now (ok, not really, but it makes him feel better to think so). :thumb:
put me on the list for the kit, where abouts on the east coast is the kit now? thanks, shane
east coast kit is en route to natedawg as of thursday aug 25. i apologize for the delay. life is hectic.
Quite alright hopefully i can do the adjustment with the shims in the kit, no one around here has any in stock. I will do it ASAP and send the kit off.
West coast kit is up for grabs. Sanjay is going on vacation. Let me know if you need it, and I'll ship it out!
pandy
Nate, there's a suzuki dealership on 460 in Cburg, go past wallyworld and it's gonna be on your right. I think that dealership allows returns on orders. Also hook up with the VT motorcycle club, they'll get you good deals on parts.

Actually that is where I got my GS :) and I will check into the motorcycle club. Thanks :thumb:
cancel me off the east coast list. i'm gonna take my bike to the stealer ship and might just have them do the valves for me just to get my bike running.
Got the valve kit today in the mail. I will be adjusting Friday, hopefully, and mailing the kit of ASAP to next in line, ?, provided the drive to Cincinnati and back on thursday goes as planned.
put me back on the list please, i now have no more money and can't afford the stealership to fix me bike. thanks shane
Calvert is up next on the east coast kit.
PS: Kerry that valve video was fantastic :thumb: :thumb: Just wanted to say so myself even though I am sure many have before me
Glad to hear it! 8)

I'd like to get in line for a kit. I'm in Texas so I guess that I should queue for the West Coast one.
PM me for addy
merci, gracias, and danke
im all done with the easat coast kit, whoever is next should pm me their address so that i can send it off
I guess I'll get back in line for the west coast kit, after callmelenny. By the time it reaches me, I'll have ratbike ready for the adjustment. :thumb:
Aerospike is next. And then I think I'm next.
Aerospike - since we sorta live close to each other, we might be able to meet.
I've got a garage but I'm in Rockville, MD
PM me
Jan and Calvert, you're both PMed :)
i sent the east coast kit off today
I'm back from vacation and all settled into my new place, so I"m also in line for the west coast kit. Pandy, I can come over to your place to pick it up or drop it off, depending on who gets it first between the two of us.
I'd like to join the East Coast list. I think that puts me in line behind JunaryBunch. If so, JB, just PM me when you're done and I'll send you my addy.
Dave
Edit - answered my own question.
Job done! Thank you Kerry for the kit and the great video. I've added a little flat magnet to the kit, because my round magnetic pick up was too fat to get close to the shim. I didn't have to adjust the idle. My only concern is I feel that the left side of the engine gets hotter than the right one. I'm hoping I didn't mess up the exhaust valve on that side. Are there any signs of an out of sync valve? Weird noise? Different exhaust color? Maybe I'm just too paranoid. Thanks again Kerry.
East Coast Kit personel please pm me or tell me what number is being served.....I might be like number 99 or sumpt'n.....
Hello from across the pond! Does anyone know of a link where the video can be downloaded from as perhaps we do not qualify to receive the kit in the UK :(
East Coast kit will ship Monday. Since Kerry is MIA, I'll just send it out and get back in line to get it when he comes back.
Cheers
How's the west coast kit coming?
question...is this kit all i need for a valve job?
should i buy a set of shims before takign the head off?
Quote from: Frostquestion...is this kit all i need for a valve job? should i buy a set of shims before takign the head off?
You won't know what size shims you need 'til you go in, and the size you need might already be in the kit (I wasn't that lucky, though  ) And you might get REALLY lucky and not need to replace any shims!
Gets in line for the East Coast....
i'm planning on buying my own kit...just wondering what shims i need...and since my bike is my only mode of transportation...it'll be difficult to go get shims when my bike is apart...
Pandy,
Rgal just pm'ed me that she has the west coast kit. She wants to hang on to it for the first service on the new F she has. If you need it ASAP you can leapfrog me. I'm busy travelling for work for the next few weeks.
We're going to buy our own tools this weekend! Thanks for your kind offer, callmelenny , but we're off the west coast list now!!!
i need to get in line for the East Coast kit also...
Aerospike.. who did you send the kit to?
OnlyPastrana... do you have it?
If we can, let's create a list. I'll look back and see if i can.
Frost, like pandy said, you'll need to check the clearance on your valves before you will know which shims you need. The east coast kit usually has a good variety and i atleast lucked out last time and it had what i needed.
Edit -----------

is this correct?
I sent the kit to Junary. It took me a while to get the bike running.
Junary... if you want, we can meet up. I live about 45 minutes from you. I've done the valve job before.
Lemme know. I have a garage we could work at also.
Is there anyone who can burn a copy of this for me as I cannot get a hold of Kerry
Who has a kit available to send to the Eastern Shore of MD?
Please put me back on the west coast kit list! By the time it gets to me, it'll be time to do ratbike AND perhaps the commuter will need it, too.
Which Coast kit would come to San Antonio, Tx?
I have the West Coast kit. Callmelenny passed it on to me the friday after selling his GS500 (and the day before pulling out for NC). I will be done with it after this weekend and then will mail it off to Pandy. Please PM with mailing information...
any news on the east coast kit? or should i sign up for the west coast as the east is MIA??
who has Kerry's Email? or a number to call him? If someone can drop him a line and ask his permission to Duplicate his Video, i will either post it on a server to be gotten, or Dup out a copy onto CD.
yeah is there any news on the east coast kit? I am goinf to be needing to measure soon and I would like to get in line.
I'm not sure if I'm techically on the west coast list or not, but I need the kit too. Of course I can just drive over to Pandy's and pick it up after she's done.
can i get on the WC list after sanjay
QuoteHello Chuck!
YES - by all means pass it on. As long as it's not for profit I'm all
for it. (And thanks a lot for asking ... I appreciate it.)
I really meant to make an extended visit to GStwin.com over the Christmas
vacation, but it never happened. I guess I just have to realize that
I'll never be able to catch up / keep up, and at least drop in for short
"bursts" once in a while.
Meanwhile, I have a new (well, a resurrected) interest that is keeping me
busy. I'm trying to do a little woodturning -- as a hobby, not for
profit or anything. I have a Delta Midi lathe, sufficient tools, videos
galore, even online forums. But I seem to spend more time getting me and
my shop _ready_ for turning than actually TURNING. I did actually turn a
small box out of a scrap piece of 2x2 pine the other night. It had nail
holes through it and everything, but the guys at work were duly
impressed. Imagine if I could only commit to making something "real"!
Well, I have plans galore....
Speaking of plans, it would sure be nice to buckle down and polish off
the DVD version of that valve adjustment video. Then I could remove
about half a dozen electronic Post-It notes from my screen. <grin> But
now that work has slowed down and I have a little more time ... I'm off
in a totally different direction.
Such is life, I guess. But don't be too surprised when I show up out of
nowhere one of these days.
Say "Hello!" to everyone for me, and keep up the good work.
Kerry
OK,
I personaly now have the Greenlight to distribut Copies of His Valve adjustment Video.
Im trying to set up a site so everyone to DL it at thier lesure.
ill probly put out a few hardcopies aswell for cost of shipping and blank CD. [Basicly send me a blank CD and prepaid shipping envelope for a copy]. but it will have to be a few at a time, so i dont get overloaded. first option is the Downloading. I will let you all know in a day or so.
ok, I have a site setup with the file on it. ITS VERY SLOW :icon_confused:
If you would prefer a CD copy, send me a PM
http://www.cooneycomputers.com/~rimfire/
Please don't laugh at the page
The video is 58 MB large. I think it is too small to be complete. Was the upload unsuccessfull? Please check.
You know i started dreaming about the interactive DVD GS500 manual, where instead of pictures and words are videos. This would be the ultimate manual. Kerry's video is the first step to it i think :)
yup, it did goof. attemping to upload it again its 549M in size. winscp that i use for ftp hicups now and then. I will post again once its fully uploaded. sorry, bare with me please.
Have you considered trying different types of compression? I would try but at 7k/sec it would take over a day to download :o
yeah, I started downloading it at 1230 this morning and 9 hours later its only 34% done . But hey, it will save me 150+bucks for the job at the stealer. :thumb:
I'm going to post the video on my site for people to download. My download speeds are usually around 130k/s. I've transferred the video to several people on the board before, but this will prob be the easiest way for people to get it. I'm uploading it right now, I'll post again when the upload is done...
Damn, he said it would be slow, but thats really worth the effort is it.
damn, i was right proud of the page and getting the links working right an all. i thought it was just my FTP program that was slow. this video was put into .wmv format by kerry. i was looking to reencoding it for a DVD but folks shipping my burner seem to be using Dogsleds.
Sorry Folks, was trying to do something will good intent. If i can figure out how to setup home Lan server to FTP the speed would be good as i have comcast cable.
Alas, I have failed. :2guns:  I guess i will take the link down from my webpage tomorrow.
I Killed the link as it wasnt very efficiant and put a heck of a strain on my frinds personal server. we are looking into setting up a Bittorrent....Thing. Otherwise, ask those who have it to copy it. i will pass it on aswell
Ok the file is finally up...
http://www.jackardisana.com/gs500
Let me know if there are any problems. Tomorrow I'm going to re-encode the file and then put up a smaller version. I'll try to make it watchable but a lot less than 550Mb.
wow...nice download...i feel i can do it now...put me pls in line for the west coast kit...props for kerry ....it really does take a lot of patience to work on the gs...
PLEASE I NEED THE EAST COAST KIT. Who has it??? :dunno_white:
and after yor done i need it. this is sweet. thanks guys
Well i've posted twice and no response, i think it has dissapeared into thin air.......
Who's next in line for the west coast kit? PM me your address, and I'll mail it out next week. (If you're next, sanjay, please PM me your address; since I'm recovering from surgery, I'm not able to take it to you or receive company. Thanks for understanding!) :icon_mrgreen:
That's a great video. Thanks for hosting it for us. Can anyone who's seen the whole thing guess what's wrong with his bike at the very end? He says something like "Uh-oh now we have to take it all apart again because of that knocking sound". Did he do something wrong?
-M
he left his test shim (wrong shim size) inside....thus the knockin...
Oh yea, lol. There was break in the tape so I assumed he went down and bought the correct shim. Guess not.
-M
FYI, the west coast kit doesn't have any smaller size (2.60 and less) shims, so if you need them.. plan on trading with your local dealer...that's what I did...or order ahead of time.
Im in missouri, what kinda wait time should i expect for the next kit?
how many need the east coast kit if we can get some #s together i could put a kit together and then pass it on. as it seems it has gone out the door but if this thread is up to date i will look back and find the last person to get it then try to pm them and get it.
I have shims and a davidpu valve tool I can donate to a kit. Where do I need to send them?
trey
no need for a kit to be sent to me, i had a friend take a look an everything is good
I need a kit. I am in the process of doing some maintenance on my bike right now. If no one else on the east cost is in line I would greatly appreciate it. Just let me know. BTW I am in Louisville,KY
If no one else is in line for the west coast kit, I'd like to sign up for it. Seems that Pandy had it last?
West coast kit is on its way to Sanjay today. :icon_mrgreen:
I might need a kit. I hop inline because it is a lot easier with the tool then a screwdriver if i need to adjust. anyway it would make the spring adjustment easier and there's my .02

Whats going on with the east coast kit?
So it went from pandy to sanjay...so who's next? I don't know where this list is, but I need to get on it. I'm at 3300 miles, so I'll be near 4000 by the time it gets here. So...am I on now, or what do I need to do?
Thanks all.

That is very helpful, thanks so much for taking the time to do that. Do you have a time estimate from when the person before you receives it to when you see it? Of course it will vary on the person's mechanical aptitude, their location in relation to you, and so on. But how about just an estimate. So when you found out pandy had it, how long until you saw it? That would just be handy for planning purposes.
Thanks again. :thumb:
I think Pandy had it for about a month. 2 weeks of that was a shipping delay which had nothing to do with wrenching time. With Kerry's video to help, I'd say 2 weeks is a good amount of time to get it done and pass it on. Of course, who knows what my answer will be 2 weeks from now, hehe.

Wait a minute, 2 weeks? I will be off my motorcycle for 2 weeks? Thank god I'm getting that honda c70 together.
Seriously though, that's a long time. But I'm assuming that includes prep, shipping, and so on.

I would have only had it one weekend, but for circumstances. Sorry I had it so long. I sent it off as soon as I could.

Should only take an afternoon if you've never done it before and don't run into any big problems
Oh I agree about it only taking one afternoon. I was including the time between when you get it and when you have a free afternoon and then the time between that afternoon and when you finally ship it off again.
I got the kit two days ago but I won't get to do it until Saturday. The rest of the weekend I'll be out of town so I won't get to ship it out until sometime next week.
And if you need a shim from the dealership, that stretches things out.
Pandy, don't worry about the delay - your reasons are good ones. :)

Kit Status:
I think JunaryBunch has had the East Coast kit since early Oct.
I just received the West Coast kit from Pandy.
Waiting List:
Here's what I compiled from pg 27 through 31. If something is wrong, please correct it. Since there's more demand for the East Coast kit, I've put Texans on the West Coast one. I also put down locations so neighbors can meet up to work together or exchange the kit.

Great job! Shall we go ahead and call this this
official list? If so, I guess we need to find out who has the east coast kit sitting around and get that puppy circulating again. Has anyone tried contacting JunaryBunch?
-M
Sent Junary a PM a few days ago, but his profile says the last time he logged on was in November.
Perhaps the member who shipped it to him still has his snail mail addie to write to?
Good idea. I just PM'd Aerospike, though he hasn't signed on since November. <Fingers crossed>
alright, i only have to ship to anahiem.
Hey, I live in Atlanta.... SecondGen.... call me the day you get the kit so that we can work on our GS's at the same time!
Hey guys,
Not that anyone missed me or anything, but I moved for a new job in December and that's why I haven't been on in a long time. Anyways, I still have the contact info you guys need. My only concern is disclosing that info without that member's consent. So is there a forum rule about that? Or should I just forward it?
Sorry for being such a pain.
So far there isn't a rule, I can delete it after it has been posted. I am hoping that person hasn't moved. Another option would be to pm the address to the next person who needs the kit so that they can contact Junary; Junary only needs the address of the person to send it to next.
I'd prefer for everyone's safety that no personal contact info of another member be posted without their consent.
PM the next person the address and/or other contact info so they can try to reach them. Other than that one of us admins would do it next but after that its MIA...at which point someone from the west coast that has that kit should copy it for us and get another copy circulating.

Will do, TB. I'll send you a PM if/when I get the kit.
As far as contacting Junary, I'm fine with whatever you guys think is best. May not mean much, since this is an online forum and there's a certain amount of anonymity in that, but I can assure you that I wouldn't abuse the info, if received. However, if one of the Mods wants to take on the responsibility of contacting Junary, it's the "most proper" way to proceed, IMO.
Dave
Yeah pantablo is right. And as for the adustment time it really shouldn't take more than an hour or two to actually do the adjustment. It is waiting for a weekend that would have me say at most a week. But then again i would make time in an afteronoon to get it done and get the kit back on the way.
Do we know where we're at with the west coast kit? Just curious...
Dave
Finally checked it yesterday. One valve is < .04 mm but the bucket still rotates. So that means 2.65 down to 2.60. Unfortunately, there's nothing in the kit between 2.65 and 2.5. None of the local dealers stock GS500 shims, so I had to order one. When that comes in (probably by Friday), I'll pull off the valve cover, switch it out, and send the west coast kit out on its way.

Not even Bike World in Sunnyvale? I got soooo lucky. They had the shim I needed, so I had no down time at all! :thumb:
so whats the deal with the east coast.
The next member on the east coast list is contacting the last person who received the east coast kit. We're waiting to hear whether he's able to make contact and get the kit passed along.

Pantablo, I'm next in line for the EC kit so if you could send him a letter and/or email, I/we would appreciate it. Otherwise, it looks like we'll need to start a new kit and get it into rotation.
Thanks,

so Sanjay, has the west coast kit made it's way to the next stop?
Indeed, it will be shipped out tomorrow. There's been lots of rain here and I have to wrench outside...hence the delay. Got it all done this weekend, so it's labeled and ready for shipment. It will go to Kee, as Budrick already did his a while ago. So here's the updated list:

Yes! So depending on how much I ride and how quickly the next 3 people on the west coast do their valves, I'm getting it right around 4K miles. Swish!
Has ANYONE seen or heard from JunaryBunch, aka Rick Choi... the guy who was last sent the East coast kit? There are two people in Atlanta waiting on it (SecondGen is next on the list). The west coast kit has been to 3 people in the time its taken JunaryBunch to pass the east coast kit along. The link to his profile is here (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?action=profile;u=3114) and it says he hasnt' logged in since November 3rd. How much longer before another kit is made or before someone tries to contact him?
sweet guys lets keep this thing movin along!!
ya lets keep it going!! i gotta sell my baby soon AND the valves need to be adjusted! and iam tierd of not being able to go fast....
I got it yesterday. If it stays dry this weekend and don't need to order any shims and I can figure out what the hell to do, I will get it out ASAP.
 Will someone, be it moderator or user please clue us in on JunaryBunch's contact info so that us EAST COAST folks can ascertain the whereabouts of the East coast kit?

The last person who sent the kit will have that address... and a moderator would be able to track down his email address.

Hey Kee, what list are you on? I don't see you on either one.
He was in the West Coast line. After he's done it should go to the Cali guys (if they still need it) and then to me here in Texas. If anyone in the Houston area wants to do ours together we could make an afternoon of it.

Since I was shipping it to Kee, I went ahead and took him off the west coast list.
Also, pantablo has contact information for Rick Choi. This was given to him by the person who sent Rick the valve kit. He is using it to follow up on the kit, but it was agreed that only the moderators should get such info, and only when necessary. That's why it hasn't been posted publicly. The delay is probably due to the necessity of contacting Rick by snail mail.

I finally called Rick. talked to wife/g/f perhaps. Rick was about to send it off to the next person but she said it was missing one thing (that Aero forgot to send him). Thats okay. I told her that if he still needed it I could have that missing peice sent to him so he could use it, then he could send it off.
I'll follow up in a few days if I havent heard from him by then.
I still haven't heard from Celica yet so thinking about bumping him down one spot on the list if that is OK with everyone. Agent, want to PM me your address?

So how'd doing the valves go?
It was alright. Hard part was that I wasn't properly using the tool to depress the bucket. You need to get it close enough to the valve that is does not slip and you can rotate it till you can't anymore. Then getting the shim out is easy. I didn't watch the video all the way through. Stopped it at the point where Kerry was having the same problem.
ei kee you got pm! woot!
I put Kerry's video on DVD... so I am going to have my portable DVD player out there for reference when SecondGen and I do the valves.
On another note... I opened up my R6 this past weekend... man is that airbox a pain in the ass to put back in

Status update for the East Coast list: I have it and will hopefully be finished by the end of this week. TarzanBoy and I checked our valves on Saturday, and managed to get his taken care of, but both of my exhaust valves are tight. Unfortunately, none of the shims in the kit are small enough, so I had to order some new ones. As soon as they arrive and I get my gs back to spec, I'll mail the kit out. The waiting list is below. Jace009gs, if you'll PM me your address, I'll get the box ready to go.
Also, the kit does not include a set of feeler gauges (I'm not sure if it used to, or not) so be prepared to furnish your own. They can be found at most auto parts stores .. I just picked up a set the other day for $5. Otherwise, it rocks. Thanks to Kerry and anyone else involved in getting this kit built and making the rounds .. it's a HUGE help!

+1. And be sure you removed all 6 bolts (sometimes it's the simple things). Mine was on tight too, thanks to the accumulation of crud from a leaking gasket (that'll be fixed this weekend). We had to convince it with a mallet and some
gentle prying w/a screwdriver.
mine was on tight too, the gasket basically shredded when I finally got it off. The replacement was about $20.

Crossing fingers...now.
No, I'll still need the kit. My engine is in about 5 different pieces right now and I'll need the dial caliper and maybe one or two of the shims to get it back together.

I'm kinda kidding. But I'm happy to see this is moving along fairly well. Good wrenching, West Coasters!
Hey Mk1, I allmtrslut and I were planning on doin our valves at the same time since we live pretty close to each other. If you want, I'd be willing to meet somewhere and have all 3 of us do em at the same time. That way we can split the shipping cost =P Just lemme know if that sounds like a plan or not.

Doing well, thanks :) Had a little spill at willow springs big track but it was all cosmetic, mostly fixed it up.
The process for the valve adjustment is pretty simple. Kerry's video helps a ton. But all in all its pretty easy.
I did it on your bike about 500 miles before I sold it, so I'm glad to hear you've put on a bunch of miles since then.
allmtrslut-
I believe it is in Celica's possession right now, waiting to ship to you.
Thursdays, I would have to head up after class which lets out at 3:30-4, but that is definitely work-able on my end. AgentNitz, that work for you?
funny situation is i just realized that my valves dont need to be adjusted....retarted story but i guess i will share with you peeps! i was washing my bike about a month ago and ended up puting a shirt around the airt filter so water wouldnt get in....well it seems i forgot to take it out. so..when i get passed 5k rpm the bike cant suck enough air...hence it feels like it isnt moving forward very well. i found this out yesterday when i took my seat off to look at something  but i have almost 5k miles on the bike and was wondering if i should check the valves out anyway!?!
i sent it to agentnitz...theyre planning on doing th check together, with allmtrslut that is...no skipping

Sorry for the confusion...I wasn't totally sure what was going on, and wanted to get it cleared up.
allmtrslut- Is the total mileage on your bike 5K now, or is that how much you have put on it? If I were you I'd leave it be until it starts losing power, but that's me and I've checked 'em once in the (almost) 19K I have on my bike.
naw not 5k total, it has 18k. but the last valve job was done about 4k miles ago so iam just gonna let it be for now i guess. You guys just skip me sorry for the retartedness thanks.

Wow ... wait a sec there ... I am before you ranger brown ...
BTW one of the SC/NC guys can call in a GS valve party ... someone ... anyone ...
I can bring the Beer  ...
Cool.
Srinath.
i could do a trip up there to check them. sorry about the jump lol
It's getting closer...
I'm way down south if y'all want to come down for a meet.
South ??? where ...
How about y'all come to charlotte ... and heck we can jet the damn things too ... like do it all ... I'll run about telling you this and that. We do everything. Oil, valves, carbs whatever ... extra hands ... Sat after ~1 should be great, as is sunday.
Cool.
Srinath.
South...like Hilton Head/ Savannah south.
yea i like his thinking, i got a house down there, and a large deck boat. fishing any one? BBQ crablegs ummm good
OK sounds good, but toss in some chicken too ...
One thing is ... I got the whole entire home depot+sears array of tools ... that might be a bit much to bring there ???
Cool.
Srinath.
what tools?
6mm and 8 mm tq wrenches
and 5-21mm sockets and your good to go.
We not doing anyhting else ??? Carbs ??? whatever ...
Cool.
Srinath.
you dont need a full tool set for that do you? i mean really
Who knows what stuck bolts may come ... then the jets themselves are going to have to be yanked out ...
If its this saturday and we are going to do it in SC, I may have to skip on it.
Might not have transport for the bike ... aka ... truck may be out of commission ...
How about one of the NC guys stop by my house on the way back ... 15 mins and I'll give the valve kit back to ya ... day or night ... 15 is all I need, if you call ahead, I'll make it in even less.
BTW is there any others that want to do it ??? just you and me are PMing ...
The kit is in transit to PA now right ??? maybe over a week before it even comes back to here ... May need to push it back to next weekend. heck ... I'll yank the 1 and only shim out I need to swap and see if someone can send me the right one out of the kit ???
Cool.
Srinath.
oo i didnt plan fo rthis this week end, we will need to get a date out there and do it. or we can all me half way to my place in the middle of sc on some set date? next month
OK we could do that ... or we'll coordinate with un1261 or one of the Greenville/Durham guys ... we need y'all to pitch in ...
And if its not this weekend, I am going to be good ... I hope.
Columbia isn't far at all ... so Its cool with me.
Cool.
Srinath.
Count me in....I have tools I bring if need be. OLD gear head here. Just give a hint as to when where and what to bring.
If need be I can trailer bike with tool box in trailer.
All right kids we have a volunteer ... now let me see a show of hands ...
BTW even if not on the list ... feel free to be in ... since this is a 2-3-4-5 fer ... no problem of cutting in line ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Drop me from the list. I'm selling my GS.
Doug
Now - Why would you go and do such a thing ... just so you'd not have to see me right ... :2guns:
Come on ... I know I bite ... but I am not rabid ... atleast not any more ...
Cool.
Srinath.
Well this weekend is shot ... no truck (AC mechanic didn't start it yesterday, he's starting friday) and I have work both days ...
Next weekend - someone better host this thing -
I'll do valves, carbs (light float adjustment and air screw fiddling ... jets are done, maybe a needle washer or so ... to be decided on my bike, then I am swapping out the CCT ... mine has a homemade back cover that is leaking like a sieve ... Ironic, since its got no hole in the middle while the stock does ... :o ...
So some one pony up and host this, I'll even bring the beer - cheap ass beer ... want fancy ... then like you bring it ... Else I'll yank the cams off, get it all done in my driveway and drop this whole damn thing.
Cool.
Srinath.
sent the kit today. should be there in buy friday or sat
does the kit have shims? where can i got for new shims?
yes it does but untill you check what you have, you will not know what to get.

If you send it before Sept 1, go ahead and send it to rangerbrown first. I won't have time. That makes more geographic sense, too. For that matter, slide tussey in before me, too to finish up the southern tour then it can come up north.
That would make the list (as far as I can tell):
0) un1261 (Beaufort, SC) (currently has it)
1) rangerbrown (Columbia SC)
2) tussey (Orlando FL)
3) Chuck (Albany NY)
4) domahmegok (Boston MA)

You never added yourself to the list, Srinath. (Okay, you did say "me, me!" but the list was reposted from the previous list, which I think is an honest mistake. It takes forever to read all the posts and figure out what the list is supposed to be, it's easier to go to the previous list and make the change.)
Also, you removed rangerbrown from the list. I don't know if that was revenge or what, but I'll just post the updated list.
1) tussey (Orlando FL) - Currently has it.
2) Srinath (charlotte NC)
3) Chuck (Albany NY)
4) domahmegok (Boston MA)
5) rangerbrown (Columbia SC)
Oh - I dunno, I think rangerbrown is squatting ... sorta for a bike that may need it at a later time. Its cool, but he keeps appearing on the list several times ... but I forgot/confused no revenge.
RB - You're welcome to show up with the GS and have its issues sorted out. Jetting and valves ... ...
Cool.
Srinath.
I'm done with the kit. Srinath, PM me your address and I will send it out.
The kit is kinda in rough shape. Feeler gauges are pretty bent up. I didn't use the caliper, I used my own personal micrometer. but the vavle depressor tool is still good and there are plenty of shims.
Well one of my exhaust valves (the same exhaust port with the sheared bolt) was tight by .1mm so I fixed it, and now the bike doesn't start. Sounds like the engine is siezing or something. Turns over and over without spark plugs but once I put the sparkplugs in the enginer turns over maybe once or twice then stops. I suspect a bent valve so off to the shop she goes. Also gonna have them remove my header bolt that is stuck :icon_rolleyes: I don't know enough to mess with my engine.
Shipped to Srinath

OK I got it saturday, sunday I was swamped with other people's bikes, monday, tue it has rained when I make it home, and today the whole day its raining.
I have to do it in my driveway, due to assorted crap in the garage. I will get it on the first sunny day and send it immediately after.
Cool.
Srinath.
I'm gonna pull a rangerbrown and bump myself down on the list. I have a track day next week, and I don't want to start a mechanical job that I may not have time to finish. I think I barely have time to get it track prepped. Srinath, send it to domahmegok when you're done.

Kit is in da house, thanks to domahmegok. I might get to it on Monday, or NEXT weekend. EdChen or rangerbrown, let me know if you need me to move it along. Otherwise I won't feel bad about taking my time. ;)
I'm ready whenever! No big rush or anything, but the sooner the better of course.
Thanks!
same here i am ready when ever its about that time, should have the head back on the block and ready to reshim the cams then.
I'd love to get it, think they might be starting to tap just a touch....but I'm scared to do it the 1st time solo...anyone close by? I'd supply the beer, or pizza, or sushi, or pb&j :)
P.s. This is a GREAT site!
yea i am we can do both at the same time, i am in columbia SC.
If you ever let yourself get to the top of the list.
2nd in line now
Done tonight. Took longer than expected because all 4 valves didn't clear the 0.8 all the way down to the 0.3. I thought I was going nuts until I realized I missed a decimal place. :icon_rolleyes: In the end only one valve was slightly tight, and since there wasn't a 255 shim in the bag, I just swapped out my 260 for a slightly smaller 260. :)
Queue:
1) EdChen (Champaign/Urbana, IL)
2) rangerbrown (Columbia SC)
3) rob1bike (Aiken, SC) (probably with rangerbrown)
wo ho, its almost here
Ranger, can we get together when it comes? ...the valves that is, I don't go that way! :)
is the kit avalable to come north of the border????

Can I get back on the list? Don't need it till after January 1st so I can do AJ's when she moves out here...she's long over due. If it gets passed around before then and someone else needs it before me, feel free to skip me.
All done! Sorry it too so long, bad weather and midterms made it slow going. Anyhow, whoever's next: rangerbrown or rob1bike [are you two cheching yoru valves together?], pm me the address.
i should check more often....
i havent talked to him about it but in any case its time to do mine as i am past due with some tickin going on
pm sent.
Yeah..sorry, I still need to do mine
I would like to get on the list sometime as well. I would love to have my bike ready to go by spring if thats possible.
Hi, I am in need of the smallest "test" shim, not the whole kit. I did the clearance check tonight and all 4 are way too tight. I cannot figure out what shims I need without the thinnest shim 2.15. When I am done I can donate 2.62, 2x2.60, 2.65.
Whoever has the kit and willing to send me the shim can you get back to me soon?
TIA

If you can spin the bucket, then there is some clearance. Get a shim 5 sizes down and measure again. If it's 260, go with 255.
If can not spin the bucket, get a shim 10 sizes down and measure. If it's 265, go with 255.
-10 should give you some clearance, so even if it's not spot on, you can still use it till you get your hands on another size. Just make sure you can spin the bucket. If you can't spin it, park the bike till you get another size.
There is no need to get a 215.
The dealer can order sizes in incraments of 5, 240, 245 250 255 260. They don't usually order the off sizes like 252 and 258. A sticky for off size shim trading would be a great idea. If you can get clearance within spec with dealer order shims, that will be easier for you than waiting on someone to send one to you.
Shims are cheap from the dealer. Most charge less than $8 per shim, and will let you swap them for different sizes.
If anyone has a 252, I need it. Send me a PM please.
I would like to use this kit whenever possible. Whos's got it? Put me on the list.
Thanks.
I thought I had seen a link on where to buy the hook tool for this kit, but I cannot find it with the search function. Anyone know?
Once I get a kit together and my bikes adjusted I will be willing to send my kit out too, so we can have three floating around.

It's called Suzuki Valve (Shim) Tool - $18, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VALVE-SHIM-TOOL-FOR-SUZUKI_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43998QQihZ006QQitemZ160039607683QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VALVE-SHIM-TOOL-FOR-SUZUKI_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ43998QQihZ006QQitemZ160039607683QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWD1V)
hey guys sorry it taken so long, lots of things have gone on on my end so i will have this kit out by weds next week
Is there an ongoing list? who is keeping track?
I now have a shim tool. (THanks Stephen) When I am done with it I will send it out to whomever needs it.
-----------------------------------------------
I have only One question........ with 26 parts.
so, I have the tool and no shims. The nearest Stealership is 40+miles away. They do not have a shim exchange program. Meaning I have to keep what I buy, no trading for different sizes. At $8 a piece, and 80 mi round trips, this could get costly quick.
So I have to do this with No test shims and little room for error. Any suggestions?
I figure maybe I can take the original shims out and measure the clearance without shims. Then subtract the necessary clearance.
Might this work?
3imo, just measure your current clearance, lets say you have a valve that is loose, with 0.1mm clearance. remove that shim and measure how thick it is (the markings may be hard to read) and then get the next size larger shim, which come in .05mm incriments. that would bring your clearance to .05mm which is right in the middle of the clearance range.
If the clearance is to tight, then you get the next thinner shim.
If you do this soon, I would appreciate it if I could borrow your tool
thanks

No doubt, you got next.
--------------------------
three of my "clearances" are too tight to measure. I know the best course of action is to replace the shim with the thinnest and measure.
My problem is that I have no Test shims.
My question is
can I take the original shims out and measure the clearance without shims? Then subtract the necessary clearance.
Quotethree of my "clearances" are too tight to measure. I know the best course of action is to replace the shim with the thinnest and measure.
How thin is your smallest feeler? .001" .002" ? If you can still rotate the bucket and shim, and the bikie still runs okay then there must be some clearance, or just barely no clearance, so I'd recomend pulling out the tight shims and then getting the next size smaller, and maybee two sizes smaller just to be sure. The dealer should take back the un used shims even if they don't have an exchange program (just make sure to wipe off all the oil and say you never used them)
QuoteMy question is can I take the original shims out and measure the clearance without shims? Then subtract the necessary clearance.
You probally can, and it can't hurt but I'd still just get the next couple sizes smaller shims.
good luck
and I appreciate the offer for letting me use your tool. The west coast valve adjustment kit seems to be moving very slowly.
what's the timeline for getting ahold of these suckers?
and here's a link for shims sold individually if anyone is interested. Seem expensive.
http://www.procycle.us/hotcams/shim_refills.htm
this place has them for 1/3 the price each. is there any difference? why would one place charge $25 and another $8?

Wiki's your friend on a lot of GS questions. Here's one for valves I created - http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/CheckValves (http://cgi.stanford.edu/~sanjayd/gs500/Maintenance/CheckValves). There I've also added a link to a place selling shims for cheap.
Good luck! Hurry up boys, Spring's around the corner!
reminor - my issue is the math. A wiki with the calculations would be a help for anyone doing a valve adjustment.
I came up with the following:
QuoteRH intake = @ .127mm (shim=2.45mm)
Total distance between cam and bucket = 0.127mm + 2.45mm = 2.577mm
Total distance minus mid tolerance = 2.577mm - 0.060mm = 2.517mm
I would need a shim of 2.50mm to reach a clearance of 0.06mm
I also tried subtracting the mid-tolerance from the current clearance = 0.127mm - 0.060mm = 0.067mm
then adding that to the current shim = 0.067mm + 2.45mm = 2.517mm
again concluding that I would need a shim of 2.50mm to reach a clearance of 0.06mm
I am not sure if it is correct, I am hoping to see if the Geniuses on this board agree with me.
http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=33524.msg373804#msg373804
If I am correct I suggest we add this to the wiki in some form or another, for future reference.
I am good with math, but even this threw me for a loop.

Scratch me off that list. I have my own kit now and when I am through with it I will be sending it out as a third floating kit.

yikes! 6th in line! aren't there 2 kits floating around?
any word on the second kit? all i need is the special tool and the micrometer.
do i really need the special tool?
you don't "need" the tool, but you will wish you had it. It is possible to push the drum down with a screw driver and use a magnet to get the shim, but you need a third hand to pry the shim loose before the magnet can grab it.
I've done it once or twice without the tool, but afterwards I had a freind help me. If you got a buddy to help you will have an easier go at it.
About the micrometer, I just took my shims to the auto parts store and used their micrometer right off the shelf.
My shims were still the size they were marked as, and I didnt have to buy the micrometer. :thumb:
my buddy is 7 months pregnant and probably not willing to help. LOL!
i think i saw the tool on eBay for $15. might just pick one up and start a 3rd kit.
ordered another tool plus a bunch of misc parts for the job.
new head gasket, new o-rings, new breather filter, new exhaust head bolts (mine are all mismatched and don't tighten right), new fork washer and retaining clips, oil filter and gasket.
anywhere i can get inexpensive bar end balancers? the OEM ones are like $20 each!

This is the best I can make of the list.
1. Rob1bike
2. Ajax(if the kit goes to Canada)
3. Onlypastrana
4. Sicarli
5. reminor
6. baco
7. 3imo
p.m sent to ranger....Onlypastrana is next
Can I get put on the list? By the time it gets to me, I'll have the $$ to do this..
you can take me off. i have my own tool and caliper now. just need the sleeve of gauges and the shims themselves.
I've got the kit (man is it in rough shape!) I'll try and fix it up a bit, gotta get AJ's bike apart and we'll get it back out ASAP.
This will go out likely Saturday if not Monday, Sicarli, PM with an address if you still need the kit. If not, next person down!
Is this free to use? If so I could use it. I just got my 1994 GS500 with 2500miles and I'd like to check the valves to make sure everythings good. So when everyone else is done with it could someone send it my way?
I'll be needing to check my valves again sometime soon. Anyone else in the Chicagoland area want to meet up and do it sometime this summer? I'll be gone from mid June to mid August, but I'll be around anytime that's not then. I've never done it myself still, so any support would be incredible. Thanks!
Edward
Ok I PM'ed Sicarli but I haven't gotten a response...should we skip to the next person or...? I've got it all boxed up and ready to go..it could have gone out on Monday :dunno_white:
OK I still have this damn thing...someone needs to send me an address...I want to keep it moving but I haven't got anyone to send it to!
I'm ready for the kit!
PM sent
thanks,

this is the coolest thread. :thumb:
i'm not familiar with the kit, but i could duplicate it if there is enough demand to warrant it. i'm assuming there aren't any patented parts and that no one would take offense to my doing so.
there ya go, machinist willing to donate some time and effort for the good of the group.
lemmie know, by pm or whatever so this doesn't hijack the thread.
Alright, dont put me on the list...plans have chagned.... :dunno_white:
ok time again to do it. put me on the list
rangerbrown
Can I get in line for the kit? Got my bike used a few weeks ago and I need to check and adjust.
So where's this at? I know I'm up soon, and I neeeeeeeeeeeeed it!
add me to the list as well, Thought I can wait till winter so if anyone needs it despratly im ok for a bit. at 2500 so
Its my fault..I've stalled it...I've got to take AJ's bike back apart..I've got a tick and I don't know where its coming from...we're going to get jets tomorrow so I'll have it ripped back apart...sorry guys!
no biggie.. I'm not even sure where I am on the list.. but I know my recent idle issues are at least partly the fault of my valves, so I wanna get it done ASAP.
Hi,
Please put me on the list to receive the kit. I bought my bike used with 10k miles, and I doubt that the valves have ever been checked.
Feel free to PM me.
Thanks!
I need to be put on the list thanks :thumb:

It keeps the valves in spec, to keep the bike running right. Not better performance, just proper performance.
who has it and when is it my turn?
Hey, can I get put on this list?
My valves really need checking and the west coast kit is awol as far as I can tell :dunno_white:

Did we skip Sicarli, reminor, baco, and 3imo or did they fall off the face of the earth.
we should put a gps tracker on this thing.
thanks.
Put me on the list too. I'm pretty sure its time to do my valve adjustment.
Where is it again ? I'd like to use it soon, like in January, please.
I'm going to get it in the next few days. Right now the list looks like:
1. bargovic
2. JeremyP
3. bobthebiker

[KJB: Added bobthebiker to the list, based on earlier posts.]
Cancel my name. I dont have the GS now, so yeah.
510 should have it. I mailed it weeks ago.
Yup, I'll be mailing it off to Bargovic sometime this week.
Sorry for the delay man, didn't have a chance to check the valves in the past week due to family and stuff. Thanks!

So the average turn around between users is about 1 1/2 weeks, right ? Cool. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't forgootten. :)
I like to add my name to the list. Might as well check my valves while the carbs are getting clean. Updating the list.

Add me to the end of that list.
God I am not looking forward to doing the valves on the Gixx :icon_confused:
seamax, pm for addy sent.
sorry I sat on it so long. came in wednesday and I couldn't get a chance to tear apart the bike until today.

Cool, it's on it's way seamax, I only added one shim, had to buy one from suzuki for freaking $13, the one I added is not really one that will help since iirc quite a few of them were the same 2.60 ( .102" ) or whatever. :)
Received the kit yesterday. Iowa has turned into antarctica. Will try to check the valaves this weekend, weather permitting.

Cool, I checked the tracking and wondered if there was a UPS truck stuck in a drift out there somewhere ;)
Don't leave the compressor tool under a rag like I did ! ;)
Got the valves checked. All valves cleared .05 mm fine except for one. The .038 feeler would fit but tight on the left rear. Did not have a .03 feeler in the kit. But according to Kerry if the shim rotates freely then it should be ok so I did not want to pop it out.
Thanks to Kerry for his video. I watched it on my laptop while going thru the process. The kit is great but sooner someone will need to replace the .038 feeler. It looks to have been extensively used and is pretty bent.
Nikux, I sent you a PM. Send me your addy and I will send the kit to you.
Yippieee! After months of wait I finally get to do my valves.
seamax, just sent you my address.
btw anyone else in san diego (La Jolla) who wants to do valves? It would be nice if we could do it at the same place.
did the Left Coast kit get lost ?
Opps! Wrong side of the country, off to the west cost forum.
Yeah. The west coast kit is stuck since August'07. I have been waiting for it since Oct'07
Last known whereabouts (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=25823.msg436406#msg436406)
Can I get in the line for the kit?
Yeah, right after me.
When do you think you will be done with it? I want to get this done as I don't know if the guy I got my bike from ever did his valves.
I am still to get the kit from seamax. The expected time for arrival at my place is this weekend. If it gets here in time I will try to do it over this weekend itself, else the next one.
As far as I know this is the current list.
1. Raydr
2. spcterry
3. Teek (not sure)
4. gmark
I'll get it done the closest weekend to when I get it. I'm gonna need a good solid day to do this crap.............got like 4 times as many valves to do......... :icon_confused:
Just purchased an '02 GS500 with 5,103 miles on the odometer. I guess I need to throw my name in the hat for the kit as well if that's alright since I don't think it's ever been done on this bike.
gimme a few days to make sure everything goes through, but most likely I won't be needing the kit.....
OK, don't need the kit. I bought the 'recommended' tools and one of these days might tackle this job.
Take me off the list.
Wow! valve adjustment rocks. All the low rpm issues are gone. Never been this smooth. Feel like a new energy... :2guns:
Will go for a test ride tomm. But I think I wont be needing the kit, the list I think is,
1. Raydr
2. Teek (not sure)
3. gmark
So Raydr, if you need the kit pm me your address. I should get it out by monday if everything goes right with the test ride tomm.
Also regarding the kit, I added a 2.35 shim to it :). Feels good.
Also I think the 0.0381 gauge has lived it life. Its bent at many places (I got it this way, still managed somehow). The 0.05 can also be replaced. Are these available separately?
If they are expensive, how about collecting $5 each from ppl on who use it next (incl. me). May be if everyone who uses the kit, adds $5 to the kit, then the west coast kit can also be resurrected.
Hi nikux, I just PM'd you yes, I could use it, also any advice re: what it needs and any ideas on the best places to get the supplies if I need to add to the kit (like the gauges), my LBS is pretty sucky on just about everything, I can't even get jets. I might be stuck using it a week or 2, I'll need my buddy's help for a day, maybe this Sunday, he's free.
Anyone else who's used it recently, any advice, please chime in, thanks!
Okay, I have the kit, it came today, (thanks nikux!) there is no magnetic tool :dunno_white: but there are tweezers. I may check my LHS for a magnetic tool to grab the shims.
Nikux added $5. towards a new West Coast kit, great idea!
I ordered two sets of Bikemaster feeler gauges from Bike Bandit, one for me one for the kit, but they are backordered. The specs are
"Dual marked 0.03mm/0.001" to 1mm/0.040". 4" long taper blades, hardened and polished."
I'm trying to borrow a different set for over the weekend, the 0.0381 is fairly creased. The 4" tapered blades got great reviews from people adjusting their valves, hopefully I get them before the kit goes back out, if not I can mail them to whoever gets it next.
I'll post back when the kit is ready to go again.
Oh, and as a XX type person, I ditched the super grody Ziplock bag and put everything in a nice clean new one. Yeeechhh! ;)
any way i can get on this list?
whats the symptoms of needing a valve adjust?
i have a ticking in the head that comes and goes at idle, any rpm, and under load at any rpm
it will tick for anywhere from 5-30 seconds then stop for anywhere between 20seconds - 2 minuets
i
It looks like you are ON it! ;)
You are after gmark. I'll post here and on the other thread when I'm done. It's the East coast kit that we on the West coast are borrowing, we are also donating $5 or whatever you can add cash wise to the kit to raise the funds to replace the West Coast kit. More is always better. 8)
The kit will be mailed to you, you then pay to ship it to the next person. Priority mail is best; it's quickest and safest.
I have replaced the worn feeler gauges and will likely throw in the little pocket magnet I got as well, the tweezers make me nervous.
In the meantime you can check out Kerry's awesome step by step video, a copy of which is included in the kit.
Okay, I did my valves Sunday, rode the bike today to test it, it runs fine but I have a valve cover leak so have to yank it again. I did the valves at 7,835k, 2 were okay, one was close to tight, one was tight. I had to get shims from a dealer who lent me their shim box over the weekend, so I gave them 3 excess shims (all over 2.70 which the kit has tons of) and a 12 pack of Rolling Rock, and put my 2.55 and a 2.45 in, also from their kit a 2.40 and a 2.35, (something like that) so those of you who like me couldn't use any of the larger shims have some options. :icon_mrgreen:
So basically I swapped even with everyone, because I also replaced the test shim (2.15) in the kit with one from the dealer who had 4 that has the #s on it so you all can tell it's the TEST shim. From what I've read though some people might need it..
I replaced the feeler gauges (the ones I found and ordered made by Bike Master at Chapparal are probably better, I think they have a smaller gauge but they're on backorder), put my brand new magnet tool in because it's MUCH better than the tweezers, and put it all in a new box. Since I added smaller shims and put in $11 worth of tools I'm not adding $5 too. BUT I think everyone else should. 8)
gmark, I'll PM you when it's in the mail, it will probably be tomorrow.
Thanks to everyone who put this kit together, I am very grateful! :thumb:
gmark is too busy right now, so suzukimx4789 is next on the list.
gmark may be next after him. I think that Raydr wasn't heard back from? And I see that lewismug is in line as well.
The kit will be on it's way as soon as I hear back from suzukimx4789.
Don't let my defective gasket issue worry anyone, what I learned was if it seems it's really too big, it probably is. The second one went on much better. I haven't ridden the bike yet, the carbs are off for a rejet, but it looks like it will be okay. I don't have that nagging suspicion in the back of my head! ;)
So what I see on the 2 lists is
suzukimx4789
lewismug, who maybe got accidentally skipped over
gmark
I'm sending the kit out to suzukimx4789 tomorrow, and I decided to kick in $5 cash too as well as the tools. So there's $10. cash towards a new West coast kit, as the tools in this set are fine, though the allen wrench for the valve cover is getting worn. I used one of my own.
ive got allot of allen wrenches that fit the allen bolts so ill toss a few extra in with the kit once i get it. :thumb:
got the kit will work on it if injury allows it.....(long story short) my car broke down on way to pick up the kit. i was repairing it on the side of the road and the drivers front rotor dropped on my shoulder and dislocated it..it may be a few days to a week before completion of the valve adjustment..
will pick the kit up monday
Sorry to hear about your injury! Just take your time man. I know how difficult it can be to try and work on something while injured. I'm in no big hurry. Just wait until you can do it right. :icon_razz:
yo heres my standings so far...
left exhaust is 0.063 mm gapped -- right exhaust is 0.076 mm gapped
left intake is 0.076 mm gapped -- right intake is less than 0.036 mm gapped
ill pull the right intake, measure and fo down 0.05 mm....this is what i should do right?
my goal is to get em as close to the same amount all around idk why im jus picky like that...i like symmetry
so ill try to get them all to 0.063 as thats dead middle of the acceptable range to give me some wear down slack depending on how thin my patience wears with the bucket tool...it looks like itl be a b**** to do lol especially one handed..
i dont exactly like the 2 measuring 0.076 because thats close to the max allowed gap
oh...i measured with the cams aimed to the rear... i just realized this is incorrect measuring...i will remeasure and double check with the masters here as to what i plan to do is correct..
may i get in this line please
where am i in this line? :dunno_white:
ok both intakes are less than 0.036mm i will be trying 0.05 smaller shims for both as i can turn the buckets on both and both exhausts are at 0.063mm which was my goal gap :thumb:....
i wasnt paying attention if the bat cover thingy was on the dial caliper or not as i took it out of box but just noticed it is not on there....im gonna have to pull my work bench and tool box and sweep my work area to look for it i tried the blindly feeling around approach and found some florescent light glass the painful way.....is the powder in the florescent lights hazardous? if so uh oh...im gonna go wash out my cuts with rubbing alcohol just to be safe lol and get many band aids too
um i think the list is now
lewismug
gmark
and now tang
(this list includes west and east coast from my knowledge as of now)
(edit)found the battery cover... it was on the work bench under the caliper box :thumb:(edit)
(another edit) read through the thread and it seems gmark was before lewismug and both were skipped and it went straight to me for some reason loool um can anyone get this sorted and situated so i can get this kit shipped out?(edit) :dunno_white:
all done there wasnt a 2.50 for my right side but there was a .05 smaller for left (2.60) but didnt use cus i didnt want my intakes off ballance? if thats possible...so this means i used no shims and kept the stock idk..should i use jsut one and buy a shim?...how much are shims???...
will ship the kit out soon as possible.....im debating geting a shim from a dealership
oh also added the shim chart, rtv sealer, and im thinking about modifying the instructional dvd to work in all dvd players and adding it to the 2 existing ones with the kit.... as it dont work in any of mine except my computer :dunno_white:
what do you guys think? buy a shim?
will it fix my crapy warm up, warm up misfires, sluggish mid rpm, and slow rpm return? if so ill be another day cus ill be tearing it back apart and puting a new shim in along with the 2.60 from the kit
have u cleaned out your carbs?
some ppl say doing that will help yo problems :dunno_white:
done it several times.... i may need a re jetting as my baffles are drilled out and i have no air filters
I think I am next in line. I posted on the 28th of Feb then lewismug With a post on Mar 7th, so I'll send the kit to lewismug after I am done. I souuld be able to turn the kit around fiarly quickly. I have a ste of feeler guages I'll throw in for the west coast kit.

i got busted paintballing houses so ive been in jail for like 3 weeks they are pinning me with over 500 counts lol i kno its way more than that because to date ive used close to 8000 paint balls.. well im real short on $ now as im a month behind on all my bills and have no job and now have court fees to pay i will get it out as soon as i can
once again im so sorry
oh ya i lost the gs had a cop come and run the vins.... stolen
so he took it and i didnt get in any trouble for that one
Sorry, but i don't understand. Why do you do such self destructive things?Just looking for some insite.
I would think the kit will be in limbo for quite awhile. From the way it was worded to me tells me he has no cash and does not see a way to ship it in the near future.
Well, there should be some cash in the kit. Just for everyones benefit, do you guys think he could use that $ to ship it out to Tang? At least that way, the kit would be making the rounds again. When/if I ever get the kit and see what's included I will begin putting another kit together for the West coast. Maybe divide the shims evenly between both kits. I have tools I'd be willing to donate for the new kit. All we would need is the valve tool. I have plenty of allen wrenches. Once I see how the kit is put together as far as the amount of tools/shims/packaging, I would be more than happy to start putting a new one together for the West coast. What are your thoughts? :dunno_white:
There was $10. in it when I sent it out to him, plus I added a new gauge set and my cool new magnet tool!
It would cost about $12. without insurance, I insured it for $199.00. That would be about $14.50 Priority Mail.
Dang! :icon_confused:
I'm thinking maybe forum members should be on for like a 6 month minimum before they get access to a kit anymore, it's a serious responsibility to take care of it and get it sent out in a timely manner. The shims alone were worth $100. I contributed $15. out of pocket to it too. That pisses me off. :nono:
What is the kid's address? Do we have any other members in his town who could go pick it up?
I have everything but the shims to make a new kit thanks to ebay. I post after I get my valves done, but I wont get a chance to work on it for the next two weekends and the job will take two weekends to do as I have to order shims after checking whet I have/need.
suzukimx4789, if you'll give me your address, I will pay the shipping charges for ups. I can call and have them pick up the kit from you and pay for it over the phone. All you have to do is be there when they arrive to pick up the kit and make sure it's packaged well enough for shipment to tang. How does this sound? If it sounds good, you need to let me know which day would be best for them to come by to get it and make sure you're there when it's scheduled.

OK, you're onto something. How about a gstwins PAYPAL ACCOUNT that takes a deposit of say... $100 or so before the kit is shipped ? IT's WORTH MORE THAN THAT, but it would help weed out the folks that might sit on the kit and not care.
On a side note, we're not just replacing a missing kit. We should also take up donations to REPAY KERRY for his loss. I'm pledging $20 myself NOW.
I'll continue this on the 'Donate your shims thread that has just been stickied', to try and keep this thread as it was. :)
This is sad, it was such a good thing. :(
He could send it C.O.D. and not put any cash up front.
or someone could go pick it up. anybody near flint, mi.
He was staying with his uncle, maybe if it's still there his uncle will do the responsible thing if UPS picks it up prepaid.
i wonder what it would cost to put together another one
I am sorry! I am not able to comprehend the last one page of posts. :dunno_white: In essence
1) does it mean that the kit is lost and a new kit needs to be rebuilt?
2) No one is sure? :icon_confused:
The kit is in a members posession, but we aren't sure if/when he will be able to send it back out to the next in line. Right now, there is no kit making the rounds.
I think that the paypal account deposit , * I hate paypal , ive been ripped off twice now and they dont care.* they charge money for accepting money , so every time ud do it , ud loose some money to them
the 6 month test is also good , but take acount into what they post about
seems to me , some little trouble maker , thats showing off , and admitting hes only got done for 500 for the 8000 balls hes used etc , and he seems pleased hes a month behind bills , with no job in prison , should be trusted with a 200 buck kit
what would be better is to take say 10 bucks into a paypal account for evertime they have it , so theres money going into the pot for new bits and and bobs , and to reimburse Kerry
Also i watched the whole video and the man did a awesome job of explaining how its done , and everything , thank you Kerry
gawd wtf!
I'M LIKE A 14HR DRIVE FROM THERE I'M ABOUT TO HAUL MY ASS UP THERE AND TAKE THAT KIT FROM THE KID.

I like your idea better than mine now. If the kit 'fund' gets a $10 or even $20 spot for each use, we could start up a 3rd kit quickly. So, the kit ships AFTER the funds are deposited, and the member gets a positive feedback on the forum to help keep track of things.
I still think there should be some donations to reimburse the original kit now.
I haven't been burned by paypal yet, but ya, I'm sure it will happen.
dude i'm down with starting another shim kit just tell me whre to donate money and i'll will be on it
i will donate $10 dollars to both coast for shims how bout we nominate 1 person on the east coast and 1 person on the west coast to start the next shim kit up?
that is if they are up for it
Ok guys, we now need a donation before the kit is shipped to anyone. Kyle has donated $20.00 to the pot and I have a poll going on right now to see what the expected donation amount should be. I will leave the poll open for one week. This has been started simply as an effort to keep the kit moving and as a way to be able to replace the kit if it is ever lost again. A lot of money goes in to creating one of these kits and some have contributed quite a bit more than others. The donation requirement will ensure that everyone who uses the kit makes an equal contribution. This will apply to both the West Coast, and East Coast kits (if the East Coast kit ever comes out of hiding again)
A PayPal account has been set up and already has a balance of $20.00. This will be the official method to donate if you want the kit to be shipped to you.
The PayPal account is: gstwin@bellsouth.net
The balance will be updated each time a donation is made and a list of people who have donated will also be kept here: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=41347.msg465166#msg465166 (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=41347.msg465166#msg465166)
I GOT THE KIT!!

I GOT THE KIT!!
The original kit? From suzukimx?
Looks like we may have both kits back in circulation now! Great!!
yayyyy! thats great news. :)
GMark, when will you send the kit out to tang? I believe he was next in line for the kit, then me, then astroaru. I may have to let astroaru go after tang and let him send it out to me once he's done with it.
lol this is great the kit is out again woot!
tang and lewismug - I am sure you guys know that the other kit (west coast kit) is up and running now. Seems that no one is on the queue right now.
If you guys are not taking it before me, Can I go ahead and get that and remove myself from the queue here? Let me know.
If you're on the West Coast, then I'd say yeah. Put yourself in line for the West coast kit. So I guess astroaru is out. I guess it's Tang, then me. Anyone else need the kit after tang? Not sure I'll be ready for it when he's done.
Before I remove myself from the queue here. Let me have a confirmation from "510". I pm'ed him yesterday asking if he can send it to me and no response as of yet from him. I will wait for his email. Once it is through, I will get out of this queue. :)
Well, we may all be mixed up then. 510 is the one who was about to send the kit to Tang. GMark, do you have a kit as well? If so, then GMark has the East Coast kit, and 510 has the West Coast kit.
Sorry it took me so long to post back. I have been on a camping trip with firends that graduated. The kit landed on my door as I was leaving. I have the east kit. I'll ship it to Tang on Monday. I am going to do my valves Saturday.
WOO HOO!!!! great News!
Lewismug and Tang: Just to update you guys on the west coast kit. I e-mailed "510" about 5 days without any reply till now. So, I guess I will have to remain in this queue until he replies. Sorry about that. So whoever wants it next is after tang->lewismug->me.
ok i'll be waiting for a kit
from whoever it doesn't matter
once i get it i'm going to do my valves asap and ship it out to whoever needs it! just so tired of waiting lol

Sorry to hear about the rough patch in your life :( I hope things pick up for you.
You deserve credit for shipping out the kit!
Hey Tang. The kit is on the way to you.
How would I go about getting on the list....I've got a couple bikes to do....
awesome i shoudl expect by tomorrow?
yup got the kit woot will be working on my gs tomorrow hopefully if all goes well i will ship it to lewismug monday or tuesday :thumb:
Tang, it looks like you may have both kits in the next day or so. Both gmark and 510 have posted that they shipped the kits they had to you. I guess when you receive the West coast kit, just send it out to whomever is next in the que over there. I dunno. I figured this was gonna happen. I guess I need to run to the dealer and get my valve cover gasket in preperation for the kit.

The valve cover gasket is expensive, and in most cases it can be reused. I would suggest looking at the condition of your current gasket before dishing out for a new one.
yup so far i got the one form gmark
510's one is in que still waiting for that one
i haven't had much time to work on the valves
i'm going to try to take a wack at it today
sorry for being slow i'm still a noob.
take your time Tang. I'm stuck away from home for work for the rest of the week.
I figure I've put this off long enough, I'd like to get on the list. I won't be able to check my valves until the week of June 23rd. So whoever that falls after I would love to get it.
I guess you'll get the kit when I'm done with it bucks.

Works for me. Is there anything I have to buy before the kit arrives, like shims?
I'd like to borrow the valve adjusting kit at some point as well - who am I in line behind?
Bucks, there should be shims in the kit already. Whether or not there are the sizes you need in the kit is a good question.
Right now the list is:
me
Bucks
asobi
I guess that's right. If I left anyone out, lemme know. Bucks, go ahead and shoot me a pm with your mailing address. Tang, sending you a pm right now with my info, although, I think you may already have it. message me a day or so in advance of you sending the kit to me so I can be sure to have enough time to get the kit back out quickly.
Sending you a pm now. If you are done with the kit soon you could send it to asobi before me, the soonest I can check my valves is the week of the 23rd. I just don't want to hold the kit up.
hola all u east cost users i just finished my valves
and do i feel like i've done some big all by myself LMAO
anyways i'm done with the kit i already sent out the west coast kit to someone who needed it on the west coast side and man is shipping expensive 12.00 bucks from UPS ghey
anyways the east coast kit should be in circuit by tomorrow if not wed. sorry for the wait guys  and i'll try to throw in some towels in there too to who ever needs them
anyways thanks for waitings peeps!
sorry again for the long wait
Just sent lewismug and bucks a PM, but I'm not going to be needing the kit - I think I'll just get my shims from the shop instead if necessary. I already bought the feeler gauges and the shim removal tool.
Got the pm, hope it all works out for you.
So when ever your finish up with the kit lewismug, you can send it my way. I think I sent you my address, let me know if you didn't get it. Take your time, no rush.
Yeah, I got your addy Bucks. I'll let you know when I receive it. I should be able to do the work this weekend, but not 100% positive yet. depends on when I get it in.

No rush, take your time. I'm going to be out of the country, so I really don't want that package sitting outside my house while I'm gone. I think I'm coming back June 21 or 22. So if you could ship it so it arrives after those dates I think it would be best. Monday June 23 at the earliest.
And if you want to throw a present in there for me I would not object. :icon_mrgreen:
ok quick question before i ship it out i hear this popping sound at around 2000rpm when i'm just sitting at a stop light is that due to the valves and everytime it pops the rpms dip down like a 200rpms but comes back up immediately.

May as well go ahead and take me back off the list. Don't send the kit to me. See my post about the hanging idle turned into internal engine damage...... this really suks. Here ya go: http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=42595.0 (http://gstwins.com/gsboard/index.php?topic=42595.0)

Edit: I can't seem to find all the shims I need. In Kerry's video he has .04-.08 I think. All I see is .038, .051, .063, .076 Am I missing something here?
yeah those are the shims i went on man :-(
sucks but they should do fine.

if i lost anything my bad and i'm willing to buy the item and ship it to wherever the kit is :-D
I'm done with the kit. Thanks to Kerry for his help and kit.
Whoever wants it next, hit me up.
How does this circle work? How far does the kit travel? I'm in Ottawa, Ontario (Canada). My bike is unservicable right now, but I'm thinking of making it a winter project.... :cookoo:
I've lost track of the 'new kit' threads and the status of repaying the original kit starters.
Could someone please update the status in another thread, or this one as I'd like to put my name on the EAST coast list again.
Thanks -
Kyle
I've got the kit still, nobody has expressed any desire for it. So whoever speaks up first I guess I'll send it to.

Thanks. It's kool. I've been pretty busy with work and the baby anyways.
Hey GI_JO_NATHAN,
I'd like to get the kit when whoever is next is finished. I have two excellent sets of feeler guages and a new set of calipers that I can add to the set if they are needed. If not, I will add whatever shims that I have extra.
Thanks,

Thanks, Nathan!! I got the valve kit in the mail today. I am gonna try to go ahead and adjust my valves this weekend so, I will be ready to send to the next person in line. There was money in the kit, am I supposed to add to the money that is in it when I pass it on? Anyway, thanks for sending so quickly!!
Thanks,

I'm not sure if you have to...but others have, so I threw in $5 before I shipped it out.
Sweet, I'll do the same.
I am pretty much finished so, whoever is next, speak up. Thanks again to Kerry for the excellent kit and video. And thanks to everyone on the site for being overly helpful!!

Id like to be next, I measured mine today and the exhausts are both able to fit a .152 but not a .178, out of spec. So do I just give my address, add a little cash and my old shims, and then pay to ship it to the next in line? This is pretty sweet !
So any chance we can get this kit to do a european tour? Need to adjust my valves here in Amsterdam :)..
Daniel
Hello everyone,
I purchased my 2001 GS about two years ago and have been using this site ever since. This is my first post, since I usually just use the search feature to find answers to my questions - which someone here seems to have always asked before. I'd like to say thanks for all the information! Thanks to this site, I've upgraded to Progressive springs up front and did the DIY ignition advance modification. I just ordered a new 15 tooth front sprocket to install next week, and hope to go with a Jardine exhaust sometime soon.
My bike has 9500 miles on it, so I believe a valve adjustment is due. Is the east coast kit still out there somewhere? I've been waiting for someone to post any type of update on it, but haven't seen anything lately.
What do I need to do to get on the list?
Thanks,
Ray
hmmmm... any news on the location of the valve kit?... ive just finished measuring my gaps and shims and need a 270 shim. was wondering if i could get whoevers got the kit to send me one and his address so i can send back the one it replaced (275). is it ok to do that?..
thanks,
edward
Lopee PM'd me that he was going to put the kit in the mail to me this week.
Kit is on its way to 68SSconvt .
I live in North Dakota... long ways from either coast. Can I be put in line for the kit? I wont need it until i get home for christmas break on the 19th.
Weston - I didn't receive the kit until a couple of days before the 19th and was actually out of town that week for work, so sorry I couldn't get it to you on the 19th. This past week was hectic with Christmas, but I am finished with the kit now. I assume you are next on the list of you still need it. I can mail it to you tomorrow (12/29) if you get me your address.
Edward - Yes there is a 270 shim in the kit. Sorry I didn't notice your post sooner. I could have mailed it when I first got the kit. I can mail it now if that is okay with everyone else here. But you may want to mail your 275 to whoever I mail the kit to instead of me, probably Weston if he still wants it.
Thanks to all involved in keeping this kit out there! I really appreciate having this available to use.
PS - One trick I think I learned - My clearance on one valve was to tight so I put in the next smaller shim from the kit that I calculated that I needed, but then the clearance increased more than expected, more than the difference in the two shims. I noticed the shim I got from the kit was "used" on one side, so I flipped it over and put the possibly slightly worn side down and the theoretically more flat unused side up. This worked and the clearance was now perfect. (Does this sound reasonable? I double checked my original shim after this to confirm I didn't measure it wrong.)
Ray
Pm'd.
I have 4 extra shims to donate too :D
Very unrelated question.
East coast is @46 pages, west coats is @14. So east coast GStwinners out number west coast by over 3 to1.
Cool.
Buddha.
Is a valve kit still in circulation? if so can someone message me? :woohoo:
who has this kit?
I do, I am finishing with it this weekend, then mailing it to wiltse.
can i get on this list somehow?
picked up my bike last september; '91 and has 16k miles. however i'm not sure if it's EVER had it's valve clearance checked. What if kit doesnt have shims needed, where to order?
ron ayers motorsports stocks the shims, prolly Bikebandit as well. But your local cycle shop probably has some used ones you can get cheap. We have a Ron Ayers Motorsports in the next town to me, and they sold me used GS500 shims for $3.00 ea.
34,000 views! :woohoo:
ran into some problems replacing my head gasket but my valves will be done soon
Weston, Can I get the kit from you, or is there a waiting list? If there's a list, can you print it here, please?
Thanks :thumb:

Weston, you ship that kit out yet?
Yeah. I shipped it to wiltse quite awhile ago. I have his address if that would help get ahold of him.

OH DEEEAR..
Ok, in hopes of the kit getting started again (and it might be a while) I'll add my name.
wilste,
Tang,
psyber_Optix,
5thAve,
ohgood,
Paulcet
And, maybe Weston can try to contact wilste. Or PM me with his info - I don't mind trying to get in touch with him.
On the thread "Donate shims to the new kit" I've posted I have a valve shim tool to donate. Get your shims together folks, and let's get a new kit circulating fast !
:)
The list won't move till we have some shims to put in it !
Well, I got a number for Eric Wilste, who happens to be our guy's dad. I asked for a phone number and dad says he doesn't have a number.
Any other updates on the PM or email via others on the forum?
yeah i've got nothing form wilste =(
Yeah, Ive dont have anything either... sorry guys... hmmmm so how did you find out that this guy was his dad? And why dosent his dad have a phone number?

is it really his ~dad~?
is it a facade?
did something ~else~ happen to wilste?
i'd feel pretty shitty if he's been in the hospital the whole time :p
Maybe his dad has some other way to pass a message?
Paulcet, was that postal address for the dad, too?
That address was different. the number I called was Bedford, I think.
Correction to above post: Bedford Hills
I also did find a cell phone number for our guy, but it is not in service.
'Dad' seemed a little irritated that some guy from Georgia was calling him at home and accusing him of having a valve cover gasket problem... I didn't realize I was talking to the father and that they have the same name until I mentioned GS500 and he says "oh that's my son Eric Ryan". So maybe someone else can call dad and ask more politely if he can get a message passed on. PM me for the number if you want.
or we can all arrange a group ride to said house and have a valve clearance party and bbq at their expense

lets just drop the whole harrassing thing and start up a new kit. donate your shims, buy a few yourself, and lets inact the deposit system talked about waaaaaay up thar ^^ from a while back.
i have the shim tool, a couple of shims, and can add whatever machine tools we need. i'd really like to see this kit circulating again.
hello gstwins ?
i am down w/ another kit circulation how much are shims?

depends. the stealerships want $5-15 each in my experience. i put a call out on most of the boards i frequent looking for shims, very few responses. :(
I've gone to my local dealership to see if they had shims. He thought they did, but checked and found that they had none. I think the 29.5mm diameter is not very common. Anyway, he ordered a kit for the shop, and will sell me what I need for about $9/ea. So I'll buy a 215 and whatever I need. The 215 and whatever comes out of my bike will go toward the new kit.
Hell, there was probably enough money in that kit to start a pretty good second one.
i'll contribute my old ones but wont know which shim's i need till a kit is circulated (feeler gauges and the such). I havent done this before so i'm not sure what the protocol is
Well, a little frustration at the dealer yesterday. He didn't order the kit, so I can't just walk in and get what I need. Will have to take the bike apart, swap/measure/guess/scratch-head/cuss, then order and wait.
I'm trying to give this guy whatever business I can give him without having him work on my bike. But if I have to pay full price for shims and wait for them to come in, I may as well look for them online. Anyone here know the best place to buy them?
maybe someone should just 'facebook' eric ryan wiltse
If you guys make a new kit, have you thought about making obligations binding? Not even slipping in a couple of bucks, but I am talking about being responsible for not losing it. I am only a student so I can't warrant this piece of advice, and it shouldn't be taken as legal advice, but I think we can run a simple website that you register at and checkboxes, and request the kit from the last person who has it.. email notifications can work.. I'm sure there is a practicing lawyer on this forum that can help.

this is precisely why the paypal deposit was suggested. no forms, no lawyers, no bs. you plunk down $100 in a paypal account, use the kit, and when it arrives at the next persons home, you get your money back.
a (semi) neutral party would have control of the paypal account in question.
i'm more than willing to start a new kit, but not without safeguards. gstwins users benefit from it, and twinners rock !
it would be difficult for me to set aside 100 ... but i really do need to do this. i may just buy a set of feeler gauges and suck it up and do it.
i'm running on 17k and i doubt the bike has had valve clearance checked....at least i wasnt told when i bought the bike.
psyber-
I need to do mine soon, so maybe we can work something out. I might have shims you need, vice versa. I am gonna check this weekend. Bike runs like crap. 17,500miles on the clock.

indeed. we can have a valve shim check party with part's install, maintenance, bbq and drinks
get more NE GS'ers to join in on the fun
ok, gave up on any action with a new kit. guess the forum has degraded too much.
*sigh*
I bought a 215 shim when I was in Minnesota a couple of weeks ago.... They had a well-used kit (some new, many used shims). Then last weekend I checked my valve clearance and found one tight one (intake). So I ordered a 260 and a 265 from my local dealer. That was on Tuesday. They were supposed to come in by Friday. Nope, not here yet---Now I have to call again on Tuesday.
So, I'm still willing to contribute a 215, (260 or 265) and a 270. And would deposit $100 in a paypal account when I need the kit next.
What about this:
Instead of putting money into a single account, someone puts a kit together with Valve Bucket Tool, Feeler Gauges, Dial Caliper, Small Screwdriver and a Magnetic Wand. (All of these would run less than $30 at the Harbor Freight. except the valve bucket tool. Shoot, I already have most of it.)
You would need to average the cost of 4 shims to start the kit which would be included with the price of replacing the tools.
Then, when say Joe Smith needs it, he simply sends the amount of $XX.XX dollars to the person before him. Then when Joe is done with it, the next person in line, (Jim) sends the money that Joe spent ($XX.XX) and joe sends the kit to Jim. (Of course each person would have to add say $5 for Priority Flat rate shipping in a USPS box. You could even use the same box until a new one was needed.)
Keep in mind, to build this kit up, each person "should" add whatever shims they believe they can spare to the kit so that it would indeed grow.
As the kit is passed along, the person with the kit essentially is "buying" the kit for use. If a tool is lost during their usage / handling of it, they would be responsible to buy the new tool for the kit before passing it along.
I may be babbling on about something that has already been discussed but essentially, there is no way to know when a person is going to decide to turn into a thief. So the main value that will be lost is going to be the shims that are added as the kit makes it's way around. Heck, if each person only added 2 shims and shims cost between $5 and $10, that is only $10 to $20 in total cost loss to the previous person but in reality, they are donating the shims anyway. If a person does not pass it along and they are paid through paypal, the person that is expecting the kit can file a claim with paypal to get their money back and the person that decides to be the thief, simply gets away with a bunch of shims because they really bought the tools.
just my 2 pennies. I will contribute my tools and whatever shims I have after I get mine done in the next few weeks to get this started.
Just let me know.
CB
it's like an offset-cost/tool loan from parts stores.
just put a couple bux down, and have it returned (by another user) when you're done with it
i'd be in
Pretty much. After reading some of the other posts, it looks like the delay is having enough variety of shims to make a kit worth while so that ultimately may be the big problem but, at one time I had seen where someone posted a link to a place that sells shims of different sizes for around $5 each? I will see if I can dig it up. If so, they may have a sparse selection but might be a better cost to get them from there.
Let's say, I need 2 shims. I order from the place that I think I can get them for $5 each and replace mine. Then, I add my 2 to the kit. Send it to you. You pay me $50 or $60 for the tools. Then you replace yours. You need 3 so you donate your 3. Then you send it on and get your $50-$60 back from the next person. Simple.
My thought would be somewhere around the $50-60 range to rent the tools and you also get a selection of shims. (If we are donating them we're not losing any money if they are stolen, just the last person who pays for the kit and doesn't get one has to file the claim with paypal against the other party. Then it would be a matter of starting the cycle again. I think too, the cost of shipping should be around $5 if we use one of those Flat Rate Priority boxes. Everything should fit in there well. (except if you are talking about having a spring compressor, then it would have to be larger.)
So this whole public kit thing looks dead as hell but if anybody has and is willing to loan me the tools for a temporary paypal deposit, I'd really like to do my valves. Or do I just need to get a feeler gauge and do some arithmetic with the shim sizes?
i have to do this too :icon_sad:
i'm just about to digress and get some feelers and order my shims as needed....
I agree with the post above. Let's all start 'Friending' Eric Ryan Wiltse on Facebook until he gets the message that we're not going to leave him alone.

Sorry I haven't posted back up yet. I have gotten a little lazy whilst enjoying the ride. :woohoo: I notice a bit of a tap that sounds like it is more towards the right exhaust so I guess I need to break out the tools and measure and order the shims and get mine done. I am still willing to send my tools out once I am finished if everyone is willing to follow some simple rules:
1. You paypal a reasonable fee not sure what that amount needs to be but I can do some figuring and such) for the kit) to the person who has the kit before you. (I think that it would be reasonalbe to simply start with "X" dollars and keep it the same all around. Then only add the cost of shipping.)
2. Place at least 1 shim in the kit before you pass it along. (Hopefully we don't overload the kit with a bunch of useless sizes.)
3. Place all tools and shims in a USPS Priority Flat Rate box (the $4.95 size ones should do it.) and send it to the person next in line.
4. Post who you sent it to and keep their address in case it goes missing. (That way, A local posse can round it up. J/K)
Basically, you are buying a set of used tools all in one pack. If you take someones money via paypal or any other method to pass it along, do the right thing and pass it along. If you lose the kit, it will be you responsibility to replace at least the tools or to at least refund their money.
I can see the kit being in possession at least 2 weeks for each person maybe slightly more in case the person has to order some shims. Once this gets going around, there may be enough shims that you won't have to order any and the kit will have all that you need.
Everyone should keep in mind that this is a "community" effort which would help everyone in need so if anyone decides to be a punk thief, just know that the posse may come knocking. (J/K)
I'll try to get on this right away and get mine done.
i know it was great for the forum to have the kit but it only cost me 4 bucks for the feeler gauges and 5 bucks for the shim i needed. Since the shim was so cheap I bought 2 of them and only took like 3 days to get them outta NY i think. Ill see if i can find the web site i got them from.
please do
here you go guys this is where i got my shims from super fast shipping great prices and they have 2 pages of different sizes. Hope this helps out someone.
guess it wont help anyone if i dont post the link......lmao

Helped my buddy do his valves this summer and you don't need a kit. If you have some feeler gauges and basic tools that most people have, all you need is the shims. Don't bother with the "kit" just buy some shims and a feeler gauge and do it.
The dork bag with the kit needs his eyeballs shanked out. :technical: :technical: :2guns:
Hello All. A little while back, I offered up the idea to do a sort of "pay as needed" shim kit. The thought being that I would offer my kit once I was done using it and forward it on. The cost to get the kit would be some sort of nominal fee. Not a rental but basically, you are buying the entire kit for really cheap. (Including a small selection of shims.) Because I am selling my bike, I am looking to put it all together with a few shims that I have. (Maybe 1/2 dozen.) I am sure I have the same shims as most everyone but it might be that I have the size you need. So, by Friday, I will put together the kit for the east coast and the first person that offers up the starting amount to get the kit, will have it within 3 days. (USPS Flat Rate Box.) There may be a couple of items / tools that you will have to source separately but all in all, it will get you started.
I will say this. The tool that I have is not that great but might get you through the swap out. It is a softer metal than I would think is needed and the left edge is a little rounded but should do the trick.
I will post up the cost for you to get the kit and once you are finished, you should ask for the same amount. you will also need to add your shims to the kit to keep it going. If everyone is straight up and honest, it should work out fine. Otherwise, you simply paid a little to get a kit. (No stealing involved.)
Let me know any opinions. I will have it ready by Friday to send out.

OK Bottle line did we find the kit or not? The set of shims is the most important. I set of feeler gauges is 5 bucks. So where is this thing? Can we like sponser a thing on Paypal to get it going again? I will donate 5 $ and run the fund if you guys are willing?
Have you considered doing a rolling deposit for the kit to speed up its movement and help insure no one keeps it?
Basically, whoever is next on the list PayPals $100 (or whatever amount) to the person with the kit, and then the person sends them the kit. The next person on the list then send them $100, so on and so on. This way you don't get your money back until you've sent the kit on.
Is this still missing? I'm looking at checking my valves soon.
I will also need to check my valves soon, I am a newb to motorcycling, but I'm glad that the forum has a resource like this. I am hoping someone didn't abuse it.
Someone make some calls.I need the kit myself.Actually, all I need is the proper set of feeler gauges.I still can't find them.
Anyone in Bergen County, NJ or the metro NYC area want to group up and do a valve adjustment? Could split shims, tools, expertise, etc. I've never done it before, would like someone there that has. I have access to a friends shop with a lift and two full sets of tools.
any of you recent posters get any info back? who's got the east coast kit?
i'm Radford, VA(near VA Tech) and will probably break down and buy what i need here soon..
Never turned up.The tools aren't that expensive. My feeler gauge and Pro Motion valve tool cost me about $20.Basic metric socket set, wrenches, and metric allen key pack are all that's needed.Doesn't have to be high quality, but good quality tools.I get my shims from CRC.The shims you want are 29.5mm in diameter.

sounds good, got everything i need but the feelers. preciate the shim diameter! that's the only thing i wasn't 100% on.
i was going to take her to a shop for the valves, but after i watched kerry's vid yesterday(think you had posted somewhere else) i got the nerve to tackle it

Awesome! If enough of us that own motorcycles do our own repairs and maintenance, then maybe shops and dealers will lower their labor rates.
well the west coast Kerry kit is still making its rounds..
my shim tool is ordered, and i will be ordering a starter shim kit this week.
i am debating if i want to let this set become a community kit. it wouldn't be a full Kerry kit, just shim tool and shims.
if anyone would be interested, post here or pm me. we'll figure something out
looks like the bEast coasters aren't into checking our valve clearances? haha
i have ordered all the parts for my shim kit, just waiting for shims to get here. here's what i have; shim tool, feeler gauges, and 5 of each 2.30-2.70(in .05 increments)
i will be holding onto this kit, but am willing to lend it to fellow east coast twinners in need, just let me know :thumb:
I'm willing to support and use an East coast valve kit. Did anyone ever figure out the security of the thing so that it doesn't get ripped off like the last one did? Especially with winter knocking on the door, it's about time for a valve adjustment. How will it work?
wasn't much interest before... figure i can make a small kit to lend out- say like 2 shims per size, shim tool, and feelers for anyone looking to do their own work. then you swap shims(the one you take with the one you replaced) and ship it back to me. how's that sound?
If it's not too much trouble that sounds great. The superstore near me has just been authorized a Suzuki dealer, so I could buy shims there, if I wanted to spend $14 each. I figure I'll just do it myself. I even have feeler gauges, just need shims.
First round of my mini Steezin Valve Kit was a major success!!!
Here's a breakdown..
Contents:
2 Shims per size(2.30-2.70 in increments of .05), shim tool, feeler gauges, and a small shim size spreadsheet.
How it works:
I will send you the mini kit, you will take the shims needed and replace with the shims removed from yer bike. Scratch on the spreadsheet what has been removed/replaced. Then you send the mini kit Directly back to me. also a $5 dollar paypal donation to keep the kit in tip top shape
$5 dollar donation:
I decided that a $5 donation would be needed since i would be not only losing my money on shipping, but also i might end up with odd ball shim sizes. I would then use the donations to get a small screwdriver, new magno wand, gasket sealant, etc.. to keep the kit up to date.
PM me if anyone is interested!
Ryan
This sounds great.
please put me on the list.
My new-to-me bike needs some lovin' :)
10-4!
will be trying to find time to get both mine done, then here's the list i have going:

Is the valve kit still going around ? I plan on checking my valves soon and would like to get on the list
Need to get mine done as well. Steezin ad me to your list if you would.
I'm holding the Steezin kit up right now. Going to check my 06 and my friends 04, then i'll be sending it out to the next on the list.
I will try to find some time to update this soon.
Excellent, thanks for the quick reply !
I'd like to get on the list as well. How do we do that? Thanks
Well after the first person on the list, my friends 04, and my 06's valve check/change my invincible shim kit is already showing its flaws. I thought it would be ok, but after a few changes and reading Baltimore's explanation of his kit:
Quote from: BaltimoreGS on April 24, 2012, 04:35:19 PM
Not to piss on your parade but eventually you would end up with a bunch of shims that are too big for any bike with some miles on it, that's why I now make people buy me whatever shims they use in my kit...
-Jessie
This is going to be the case faster than I had guessed. Already showing lower numbers of the thinner shims.
If I am to continue with the Steezin Shim Kit, I have 2 options in mind(but am always open to new/different ideas) There will still be $5 dollar fee on both options(to cover my shipping cost) With either of these options you could keep yer old shims or put them back in my kit for $1 trade discount per shim.
1 - After valve check/adjustment you mark on my spreadsheet what's been removed and/or replaced. Once I receive the kit/spreadsheet I'll add up the cost to replace the shims used, and send a paypal invoice for amount needed.
2 - After valve check/adjustment you go buy the replacement shim, and mark on the spreadsheet what was used and that they were replaced with new shim. then send the kit home to me
Let me know if you all have any other ideas!
Add me to the list please! Would be great to have that kit around when I do mine!
I broke out my shimming tools the other day and just happened to start on the correct valve. The left intake was tight at 2.68, so I picked up a 2.65 and a 2.60. The 2.68 worked just right on the right intake and the one from the right intake worked just right on the right exhaust : ) The left exhaust was just fine from the getgo. Clean living (doubtful), or lucky? I'll take whatever it is when it comes my way : ) I like to run'em on the loose side of the range...
Is this east coast kit still kicking around? [I'm in the Midwest] There's 50 pages to this thread now so I'm not fully sure how this whole system works or what the deal is. It seems like there's been problems in the past so I don't know what procedures are.
I've got a '93 that I'm working on and it started running rough after a fork seal job. It looks like the proper procedure for tuning is to start by checking the valves [I've never checked them and they could never have been checked] and then work out to the carb. My instincts tell me to do the carb only because it seems like there's less work involved [and faster, LETS RIDE] but part of me knows that's the lazy way, and I might just need to rip the carbs off and re-tune them if there's a valve clearance issue.
If the kit is tied up [or won't be released 'cause I'm new] is this still feasible to do by buying a feeler gauges and ordering [or trading] the shims after measurements are made? I could use a touch of advice. P/M is fine if you don't want to clutter up this thread.

This kit is dead. It is certainly feasible to get a set of feeler gauges and buy or trade shims. That's how I do it. GSJack has a picture here somewhere of his bucket-depressing devices. I do it with two screwdrivers; very similar.
Thanks for the info. I did find a picture somewhere and it looked like the biggest advantage of the kit is that you have a selection of shims on hand instead of having to wait for them with the bike asploded and out of commission. Feeler gauges sound cheap and I could probably use a dial/digital caliper anyhow.
I measure and order shims, then button it up and ride while I wait for them. The valve cover gasket is good for 5-6 (our more if you're really careful) removals before needing replacement.
Who has the kit? I sold my GS500 but I still have the valve bucket compressor tool. I'll send it so it can be combined with the kit.
