Title: Jetting problems
Post by: waynesoffroad on June 22, 2004, 08:55:46 AM
Hi everyone!
I just bought this bike for my wife. It's all stock But it seems to run lean right when you go to take off from a stop. It's worse when cold and gets better as it warms up but still hesitates when you take off from a stop. Is the GS500E lean from the factory? I'm not sure if I should try to shim up the needles or go with a richer pilot. Any input would be helpful.
Thanks!

From what I have learned from this board, stock GS500E's are jetted lean.  This is very noticeable below 4k rpms, but can be eliminated through rejetting.

They all need a re-jet.  If pre-2001 you need 40 pilots, one washer under the needle (ok - some say two) and go up to 127.5 main jets if everything else is stock.  With pod filters and/or a full exhaust you need to increase the main further. With both the main ends up about 150.

2001 and up its 20 pilots (different style) up one on the mid main (earlier bikes do not have this jet - do not remember the size off hand) and up one on the main to 130 (stock is 127.5).  One washer under the needle is a good idea here as well.  Once again this is if it is otherwise stock.
Title: Not 127.5...

All stock 89-00 125 mains, not 127.5... 127.5 is K&N in air box wihtout restrictor. K&N clamp on's 150.
Cool.
