I fixed the broken bolt on the oil filter cover last night but now when I start the bike up oil leaks from the cover. I have it as tight as it will go on with breaking the bolts.I replaced the seal when I changedthe filter. Any suggestions?? I called my local shop and they say it will be 5 days until someone can look at it. I'm suppose to be going on a 250 mile ride Sunday.
Is the o-ring twisted or cut? I would drain the oil and double check it.
Dirt trapped on the flange surfaces?
Is there suppose to be a gasket that goes around the filter?? Someone told me there should be. :dunno:
The o-ring gasket goes around the perimeter of the filter cover.

Do not crank down those acorn nuts till you're blue in the face... You will eat up the threads on the studs and the damn things are near impossible to remove and replace. OK OK not impossible, but dont over tighten. The 0 ring should be oiled before installing the hatch and preferably glued to the filter hatch so it definetely stays in place when tightening the bolts. I store the O ring in the middle of the manual so it stays flat.
Cool.
Srinath.
Yeah I found out about those bolts. I had to replace one last night. What a pain.I guess i'll have to drain it agian and check the O ring. :x
To compile the good info already given, and add a bit:
* Before putting the new oil filter in, clean off both the perimeter of the filter cover and the mating surface on the engine block. If there is any grit on either surface it will be hard to get a good seal.
* The O-ring usually comes out of the new filter box all "balled up". When it's fitted in the (CLEAN!) groove on the oil filter cover, you need to make sure that it's going to stay in place. If it pops out of the groove it could get pinched between the mating surfaces and cause a gap which WILL leak.
* With the O-ring in place, spread a thin layer of new motor oil along it. That will give a little bit better seal. (I personally put a drop or two of new motor oil in each of the 3 sections on the groove BEFORE I fit the O-ring, for the same reason.)
* You don't need (or WANT) to crank down on the acorn nuts that hold the oil filter cover in place. The cover is spring-loaded, which will do much of the job that a tighter nut would. I'd say to get it finger tight and then maybe another 1/4 to 1/3 turn on the wrench. As soon as the nut makes that high, thin "chik ... chik" noise - you're done.[/list:u]
As always, thanks for the awesome tips Kerry!!
