So based on the two months of owning it (2000miles since), I estimated that my bike goes 110miles from reserve to reserve. thats a tad low.
I believe the avarage that people here get is in the 50mpg range.
Bike is running rich i guess. coz when i blip the throttle at idle, i get black smoke. bad?
I havent inspected the air filter, spark plugs or the vaccuum hoses or carb set up ever since i bought it. (!!! bad me) Other than these, what else can be suspect for an inspection? tire pressure is accurate.
The bike came with Yoshi pipe installed and rejetted (uh dont remember the jetting number...Srinath??)
Advise?
Thanks all in advance,
sri
125, 40. washer??? dont know. 3 turns.
Cool.
Srinath.
So what's your MPG? How many gallons of gas per fill up?
I asked him the same question oh about 400 times...
Cool.
Srinath.
reserve to reserve is around 3.5 gallons. so thats approx 33 mpg at the rate of 115 miles to reserve.
So do you reset the trp meter at the point of switching to reserve... and not at fill up.
Cool.
Srinath.
I rest at point of fill up. i go less than 3-4 miles on reserve to fill up.
But i remember at what point i go to reserve. usually 110-115miles.
80% of my riding is on the highway, and i rarely go beyond 60-65mph.
I usually reset at fill up, and mileage is number on trip meter divided by gallons from fill up to fill up.... OK OK none of this actually changes the fact that your gas mileage sucks... it either is 33 or 34... big diff... just nit picking. Anyway I have nothing... anyone else have ideas. hell my 89 does better ... closer to 40.
Cool.
Srinath.

I'd start by inspecting the air filter, spark plugs and vacuum hoses.
well also, if you bought it used someone may have messed with the sprockets on you. a smaller front or larger rear would have that effect as well. so maybe just check that out quick too, before you go ripping everything apart.
Sure you dont have a small fuel leak?
And how do you ride? If your zinging along at 9k all day your mileage will be lower.
I do alot of Highway riding and I usually get 120miles before I hit reserve and I have 3 gallons before reserve so thats 40mpg. (plus I'm 260lbs and 6'2" so...)
Yea.. a fuel leak... You smell gas around it... if so fuel leak, Also what speed are you riding at 6k rpm in 6th. That will be a quick check of the gearing without taking the sproket covers off.
Cool.
Srinath.

Quick, but not necessarily accurate - unless you have a known tire combination. Changing the outer diameter of either tire will affect the RPM to MPH ratio.
I know what tire is on it Kerry, I gave him that tire ... overall gearing is what I am looking at, cos his gas mileage is low... yea I know... whoever check gas mileage on a bike... OK he does  .
Cool.
Srinath.
also, check your valve clearances. my gas mileage improved dramatically when I adjusted those.
Carbs that need cleaning could effect it, I think.
Also, I've discovered (quite recently) that when I really hit my throttle hard i hear a low "growl" in the engine... if I stay away from that "growl" area as much as possible, I gain sometimes as much as 10-15mpg, particularly on long trips... even if I have to downshift and kick up the rpms
