The bike will not have a problem if properly maintained. You will probably want a windshield or small fairing and some proper motorcycle luggage. Minimum would be a set of soft saddlebags and a tank bag. Traveling by bike is typically more of a strain than sitting in a mobile living room type car - but a lot more fun. Several members have posted about long trips -
remebr tht ur still braking ur bike in... keep it around 6 thousand rpms nothing higher
I'm currently riding about 250 miles(each way) each way for a training meeting for work every other week this summer. My GS looks to be holding up great(retired drag bike[long story]),other than that it needs a qt of oil for the trip each way it seems to be holding up great. I allways carry my soft saddle bags, and sometimes my tank bag. I average over 40mpg with speeds over 100mph.
I ride how I ride. My bike needs some work(esp. to get the maint. up to date), but it just keeps on going.

Yep, no problem. I have taken 3 separate 3000+ mile trips on my '99. I don't know about his individual trip lengths, but
gsJack has logged ~80,000 miles on his '97.
And as I type, our very own Marine / motorcyclist member
davipu is nearing the end of a 2-week, 6000(?)-mile, East-Coast-to-West-Coast-to-East-Coast ride on his 2001.
If you can be patient as you go up steep hills or pull out to pass at 65+ mph, this bike will take you as far as you want to go!
