Title: #$@^! Aggrivation
Post by: JBix on June 30, 2004, 01:28:45 AM
Ok. I'm getting a little frustrated at my bike. Maybe that has caused me to miss something, so here's my problem: Bike was running badly so I decided that while I was taking the carbs out I decided to rejet. I installed 40 pilots and 140 mains. (95 model). Bike was running a little rough, so I moved the shims up a notch, and adjusted the mixture screws out 3 turns. Floats were fine. Bike started and ran much better, though still a little rough. Thought to myself, good, now I can take this to work and get more than 15 mpg in traffic. Went to start the bike the next morning - no go. It cranks and cranks and cranks and backfires and cranks and cranks. Won't start for anything though. Took the tank off and looked at it, and it backfires through the left carb?!? I actually saw what looked like exhaust (?) come out of the left carb! Please help. I'm lost. My next idea was to check compression, but I don't think it's getting fuel either. I get vacuum from the vacuum fuel line, I've taken the carbs out and they are full of fuel every time. I get spark. What am I missing? P L E A S E  help me.

Thanx

If your bike had adjustable needles ("moved the shims up a notch")it is quite likely (read absolutely certain if it is a US spec bike) that it had already been re-jetted.  If so and you installed standard Mikuni mainjets you are WAY WAY WAY rich.  When ever a change results in problems go back and start over - changing one thing at a time.

Check that your choke is working right (if its rich try starting it without the choke - in fact, you might try cranking with the throttle wide open and the plugs out for a few seconds to get excess gas out of the cylinder) Only go up in size on the pilots if you have warm-up troubles
