To everybody with a new 500F, just curious how many miles people are riding theirs and how do you like the bike.
I have 4800 miles on mine in three months, and absolutely love it, yea it doesn't have the power or top speed of some of the other guys bikes i ride with, but it hangs in their pretty good while out curve carving.
Any complaints from anybody?
None here.
hello. Just Bought myself a New 04 GS500F blue. but so far i havent been on it. Been Playing the waiting game. When i was at the dealer the engine started making noise (knocking sounds) so i have to wait to see what it is... Really dissappointed... is the bike worth the wait.. am a new rider..
550, only been on one ride with my family (170 miles), I basically just toy around town and do a bit of country cruising.
edsel, that knocking sound i have been told is side to side camshaft play, i believe a lot of other people have the same sound, mine has it too. I am so use to the sound now, i don't even here it.
This bike is a blast!!

thanks, but would it cause any more problems in the future? and any solution so that i can tone it done?
My buddy and I bought 500f's last month. The knocking sound is more prominent in his that it is on mine. Its only audible while idle.
I have about 210miles on mine and about 120 on his.
This bike is a blast and i love it.

one guy here on the forum has 80k on his bike, and have read no other problems from this, I think someone said a washer or something would help eliminate the sound.

but is the noise is adding any more problems? Performance or the feel of the bike?
no performance issues, just annoying at idle.

Thanks for all the help. If everyone choose to ignore it, so should I. Picking the bike up this friday and start putting some milage on the bike this weekend.
Damn, I got only 2000 on mine! But Hey, i've already modded mine out with suburban bars (I STRONGLY recommend them for the 500F, they look and feel more proper on the bike and they're not too low). Chopped the fender and resculpted the chain guard ( BTW, the SV650 chainguards don't fit on the 500F). Added clear turn signal lenses. Its my work in progress, when I'm not ridin' I'm moddin' :)
I bought mine about 2 months ago and have around 2000 mi. I try to ride as much as possible plus the ride from base to town is something around 15mi so that is 30 mi everytime I go out. But after that I just tool around the neighborhoods in downtown Grand Forks, ND.

What are "suburban" bars? Who makes them? Have any pictures?
1300 on mine, in about 3 months. I have the tapping noise too but I think it's going away. Started at about 400 miles, dealer said it was normal and nothing to worry about at the 600 mile service. Happened about 80% of the time for 5-10 seconds when I came to an idle at around 1000 miles. Bumped the idle speed up from 1200ish to 1400ish at 1100 miles, happend about 20% of the time I come to idle. Now with 1300 miles and the same idle speed it's only happening about 10% of the time.
350 Miles Commuting to work in La Jolla, CA.
Love it to hell! Keeps up with the GIXXERS fine
My reserve tank hasn't worked on either fillups though :o
I put 200 miles on mine the weekend I got it. :)
just got my new 500f today! put about 20 miles on it hehe, love the bike though
Picked mine up last week, and have bene legal for about 3 days so I've put about 115 miles on it. I'd like to try to get about 450 on it so when I head up next wekened to see my gf I can take it to the shop on the way and have it looked at.
mike
I've had mine almost four weeks. It had 221 miles on it when I bought it, and just yesterday I went over 500 miles on the way home from work so I cranked it up beyond 5k to celebrate completion of the first break-in phase! Wow, there's nothing wrong with 5k on that bike but does it ever like 7500 better!   Wheeeee!
And tomorrow I'm leaving for a weeklong family vacation with *no* motorcyle...waaaaaaahhh!
Bought mine 4th of July weekend, put over 950 miles on her now. I've done the DYI Ignition advance, re-jet, and installed a 15t front sprocket. She's starting to come around.
Got mine on the 10th. Have 500 miles exactly. I'm getting it registered today and its really nice out already so probably going to throw the last 100 of break in on it today. Sweeeeet.
I'm planning on getting the GSR Fairing from Brazil after I pay the bike off. So around Christmas I might have my 04 fairing up for sale to anyone who might want it.
Since starting this post a month ago, I've racked up another 2200 miles, at 7000 now and still love it and still love this site.
1100 miles on mine, had it for under a month now. loving it.
what are the suburban bars , you're right, i don't like the bars on my 2004 500f, either.
I am very interesting in replacing them.
Manufacturer?
Link?
Price?
Here is a link to the bars mentioned with pics installed on a 500f. My question to those who have installed them is if rotating the front brake down (Required to clear the Tach gauge) affects the ergos of the front brakes. Did it take alot of getting used to? I am interseted mainly for looks but would like to hear some comments on performance/comfort.
