Title: wooo... there goes my front wheel!
Post by: i3randon12 on July 03, 2004, 07:00:23 PM
alright  im actually happy       u mihgt find it strange but! here gos my story

tongiht me and my bro went for a ride...   well he wa driving his explorer and i was driving to a party on my motorcycle

he floored it by me while i was stoped..
so flored my engine to about 5 thousand rpms  slowly let out the clutch so i would roll      then  let out the clutch and guned it to about 10 thousand rpms! ( by the way   is hitting the 11 while in neutral bad?) and what does tht do to the engine (whats the harm)
alright back to the story...         my front wheel jumped up on me and i pulled my first wheely!!

yay! for me!!

is 11 redline it?

and how bad is it to use 10 thousand for about a second

A second is probably okay, you just don't want to bounce off the redline for a prolonged period of time because the engine can experience a lean condition and start heating up alot. There is also a possibility that the oil that is circulating in the system will not have have enough time to fall back into the pan to get pick up by the oil pump to lubricate the engine parts.

i was racing some rice grinders and didnt even notice how hi my rpms were running for a good 2 miles.....oh well....cheap gs...for a bike that can be found for under 1k its like having a disposable bike.

i could be wrong, but i don't believe there is any sort of rev limiter on the gs, so i don't think there'd be any bouncing off of it.  you just rev the crap out of your engine until something awful happened.

i was smashed last night and was forced to ride to my friends house ( haha forced)       i wasnt a bad drive and it was all back roads... i went about 30 mph

haha  i couldnt remeber how to downshift     so    i was upshifting the whole time  i was in 6th gear going about 3 mph    trying to flor it

which one is worse?

redlining it  or doing this?

um, ah, being a dumb ass and riding while SMASHED......

which is worse..... doing something stupid or telling everyone you did something stupid.

a gs is one step above a rock....really simple and difficult to break.
but we do break them....

yeah i've done stupid stuff too, but you know what?  it was stupid.  just like this was stupid.  just because other people have done dumb things doesn't mean we shouldn't call you on the dumb things you do.  i'm saying this not out of me thinking i'm better than you, or trying to parent you, but if you can't remember how to down shift, and you're in 6th gear going that slow, get off the damn bike.  there's no reason to be on it.  yeah, i get drunk, and i think, i bet a bike ride would be cool.  but then i remember, i'm drunk, and want nothing to do with my bike.  the only risk you run to your bike running that slow in a high gear is just killing it because your rpms are so low, however, you were messing with your life out there.  yeah you were only going 30 on backroads, but you were drunk, and bad stuff can happen.  just walk when you're drunk, it seems like it takes no time at all anyway.

Wow, you're cool

Congrats, you win the idiot of the month prize. Too bad you didn't get caught, anybody who gets behind the wheel/handlebars in a state like that deserves to go to jail (hopefully), pay a VERY big fine, and lose their driving priveledges for a very long time.

Here's hoping you get caught next time.

PS.  No, not everybody does things that are THAT stupid believe it or not.

Alot of people don't get the chance to post about their "one time mistake."  I can assure you that it's not only John who believes in a  Zero Tolerance to DRUNK DRIVING.  What you did was wrong and should not and can not be justified by "haven't wa all done stupid stuff."

Expect to be flamed if you post about irresponsible behavior-  People come to this board asking for advice on riding and maintenance and 99.9% of would agree that the worst thing you could do to you and your bike is ride drunk.

Take this with a grain of salt- You could be my best friend but you'd still get the same lecture.

What a dumbass.  If im drunk the last thing I think about is jumping on my bike.  I start thinking about where im going to lay down and go to sleep.  Riding or driving drunk is a big time no no.  :nono:

Not only was you "smashed" rather than being just normal drunk or something, you actually posted in the hope that someone would think you are cool?!

Loser :(

OK guys, give it a rest!  You caught his opening line, right?

Quote from: i3randon12i know this is going to sound real dumb... bc it is real dumb!

Anyone want to answer the question he posed?

Quote from: i3randon12was in 6th gear going about 3 mph    trying to flor it

redlining it  or doing this?

I think it's a valid question, and if he hadn't said why he was going that speed in that gear, we probably would have pumped it out of him anyway.

(No, I'm not condoning his behavior.  In fact, I don't condone drinking at all, but let's not get started on THAT one.... )

You can't damage a lot by lugging an engine. You can stall it, that's about it.

Redlining...

Two possible problems: lubrication of your piston can tear and the piston seize. BAD.

Valves can begin to float and hit the piston...  break off... jam in the combustion chamber. WORSE.

Both conditions cause immediate damage. You could get a sort of mini - seize, which you don't necessarily notice and then do subsequent damage.

But engine damage from excessive RPM becomes immediately obvious.

Then, of course, if the oil pump really can't deliver enough lubricant, you could get one of the famous seized GS plain bearings. But those I have heard of were caused by low oil level.

thnx kerry, jsut for understsanidng

sry guys i said it
didnt think u guys would get tht upset

im right there with u!
im a loser to drink and drive

and thnk marcusn   for awnsereing my question!

so one more question        would i notice this??  or will it be quite and just one day brake?
Title: wooo... there goes my front wheel!
Post by: Zarathustra on July 05, 2004, 10:53:49 AM
well if you seize your engine, you'll notice right away.  it kind of has an immediate effect, that of your bike breaking.  as for other minimal damage from not enough oil, or going to high in rpms, your engine might start picking up random unhealthy sounds, and you'll probably notice that right away too.

alright        ive been having this sound like something is loose and mybe rattling in my cylinder

i brought it to a shop and i guy said dosent sound serouis and i shouldnt waste money

so i trusted him

no new osunds from doing tht.... i decided not to race anymore eighter

cause when i raced a beeemer ( killed him )          i would go uip to about 10 thousand rpms    then up shift

so its probobky not the best for my bike

The GS motor is designed to go up to 10kRPM, no problem there. The engine drinks oil at an alarming rate at these speeds, though.
Title: wooo... there goes my front wheel!
Post by: Zarathustra on July 05, 2004, 12:36:14 PM
yeah don't worry about going up to 10k rpm, that's what the bike is made to do.  just stay out of the red, and keep your bike full of oil.

I brought my bike to a shop when I first started having problems. They told me that there was nothing wrong with my bike. All I needed was a rejet...

Go check out my post about vibrations. Somehow the pictures that I posted don't fall under "normal" or "okay" in my book.

I'm not saying that the tech was worthless. We are all human and he was right. I did need a rejet. However, that had nothing to do with the problems I was having. Just cause someone says there is nothing wrong doesn't neccicarily mean that nothing is wrong.

PS- i3randon12, could you type out a few more of your words when you post? Maybe its just me, but its kinda hard at times to read stuff when people type like that. I'm not trying to take a shot at you. It's just a request.

haha sry...,<---- like this

i rush when i type           im so use to abrevaited or having my friends guess what im typing

haha

umm did ur bike just make a wierd noise           or did it ride funny?
Title: wooo... there goes my front wheel!
Post by: goat on July 05, 2004, 08:17:36 PM
I heard the noise, then it would vibrate really bad above 5k (extra vibrations below 5k but not as much). There was also a  loud noise which I thought was coming from the camchain tensioner blade or guide. There was a small loss of power, but that wasn't the most pronounced symptom.

I'll be less nice than goat. I find folks who write like that a f$cking nuisance. I did reply helpfully this time, but you stand a fat chance of me ignoring your post if u typ l33+.
