Title: Oil overfill problems
Post by: ChuckS on July 04, 2004, 06:58:02 AM
I bought my first bike yesterday.  After reading this board it seems the perfect choice.  It's a 2000 with 1600 miles on it.  Took my gearhead buddy to ride it home for me.  We checked everything (we thought) & the bike looked great.  Oil level looked fine......
Rode for about 30 minutes at about 40-50 mph, everything seemed fine so we hit the hwy.  About 20 miles down the road--  overheat.  Hmmm, maybe this little bike isn't supposed to cruise at 75-80??  Check stupid stuff......
Hmmm, oil is a little high, didn't notice that before.  The nice new oil was the same color as the dipstick & I didn't see the line of oil above the crosshatches.  Still, a STUPID mistake.
Drained out 1 quart excess!
Bike seemed to run fine the rest of the way home, about 80 miles.

Can these things survive the occasional overheat??

Since the bike does not have a temperature gauge, what symptoms of overheating cause you to believe that happened?  Other than sitting at idle, being run on a dyno or in slow traffic I have never heard of one overheating - even at temperatures of well over 100 degrees F.

It was running fine, lost power over 3-4 seconds, and shut off.  My buddy pulled to the shoulder.  The engine was WAY HOT.  I burned my fingers removing the dipstick, thru my gloves.  It discolored the oil.
I changed the oil today.  Good rainy day project.

Thanks!
