Title: holy crap, fender screws gone!! Help need temp replacements!
Post by: Rippa_MD on July 04, 2004, 07:59:57 AM
ok two of my front fender/clamp screws are gone! The screws that are in the outside attached to the clamp [not the ones on top of the fender]. I'm riding now with just two of those screws that you need an allen wrench to tighten.

I went to Home Depot and Advanced Auto Parts but none have this type of screw. Anybody know what screw size would actually fit as replacement?

just go back to home depot pull one of the remaining two out and take it in with you. all you need is one with the same diameter and threads per inch. the head design is not really important and hex head bolts are easier to tighten down.

I shook two of thos little buggers right out the first time I really opened he up after the 500 mile run-in period. Dealer replaced them with first service, free, and they are now held in with "loctite" compound.

I lost 2 or 3 of them myself.  I got the replacements from the dealer for about $.80 each.  Or you could take one of the remaining ones into a local hardware store and compare them to their selection.  While you are there, buy some Loctite or similar stuff to keep the screws in place.

Be sure to use some split washers or lock-tite, or it'll happen again.

yeah that happened to my bikes as well.  for the time between getting new ones and losing the originals though, i used what any real man will use to fix problems: zip-ties.  just get some 500 lb stress zip ties and use those, they worked fine for me till i got my new screws in.  in fact, i know some guys whos bikes are held together with more zip-ties than screws all together.

o.k. I whent to Home Depot, the smallest hex head bolt I could find is 1/4" diameter and length was 1/2". I'm gonna use zip-ties for now until I find a better match and some of that loctite compound.

Are the original bolts metric?

Yes, all metric.

Lowes has a better supply of specialty hardware.  Go to the section w/ all the bins and you should be able to find bolts that will work.

Yep - just about EVERYTHING on these bikes is metric.

My local Home Depot has a rather pathetic selection of metric fasteners, while my local Lowe's has a fairly good (although slowly shrinking) one.  An ACE Hardware store is another good source.

The Mom and Pop hardware stores are the best to go to for metric items. my little town has a great one with tons of metric items

Yeah, there is a small hardware store around me that's great, too. If they don't have it, then you are probably SOL.

Speaking of hardware, where do people get the #4 stainless washers for rejetting? I have been having a heck of a time finding any at hardware stores, auto parts stores or fleet farm (yes, its fleet farm here). I haven't checked home depot, just cause I'm skeptical that they would have something like that.

Seems like some of the old, old rejetting posts talked about getting them at Radio Shack.

Srinath, was that you?

Thanks for the Lowes tip also, that's exactly where I found what I needed.
