Title: Need Electrical Help Please
Post by: Tourmeister on July 05, 2004, 06:56:20 PM
Howdy,

We've got a 2001 GS500E with some minor electrical issues. The high beam indicator, nuetral indicator and tach lights are all out and went out at about the same time. Does anyone know if these share a common fuse? Or, if it might not be the fuse, any idea how to replace the bulbs? Part numbers?

Would really appreciate the help.

Adios,

Can't help with the part numbers (at the moment anyway).

I  just wanted you to know that everything on the bike shares a single fuse.  (For more info, see the thread HELP ! fuse/electrical (http://www.gstwins.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10161).)

Since several things went out at once, you might want to check the Haynes wiring diagram (http://www.bbburma.net/Scans/Haynes_WiringDiagram_US_90-96.jpg) for shared wires, etc.

EDIT: Changed wiring diagram link from gs500e.co.uk to bbburma.net

my book only goes to 97....
but i would check the connection inside the headlight bucket should have 8 wires  sounds like a bad connection working itself loose.

Thanks! I'll see what we can find. Hopefully, it is just the bulbs. Still, kind of strange if that many bulbs went so close to each other.  :dunno:

There may be a corroded wire connection. They may share the same ground wire, if one ground wire connection is bad you could loose all those lights.

My book shows a Black/White wire common to those bulbs and a common connector. I guess I'd check the connector and check the B/W wires to see if there is continuity. My book also lists those lights as 12v (duh) 3.4 watt peanut style bulbs. Probably pick 'em up at Advance or whatevvuh. If you are anything like me then you love the GS500 and you love this forum.

Look at the upper-left corner of the Haynes wiring diagram (http://www.gs500e.co.uk/wire.jpg) that I linked to before.  (If you're using Internet Explorer you may need to force it to display at full-size.)  You said that the High beam warning light and the Tachometer illumination were both out.  If the Speedometer illumination is out as well, then I suspect the Black/white wire, which is common to all 3 lights.  Look for a break in the wire, or a bad connection at the 8-post connector (below and to the right of the bulbs in the diagram).

You also mentioned that the Neutral warning light was out.  Does the Oil pressure warning light come on when you first turn the key to the ON position (before starting the bike)?  If it DOES come on, then I suspect either the Blue/black wire or another bad connection at that huge connector.  It it DOESN'T come on, then check out the Orange wire (common to both lights) and its connections.

I just replaced the high beam indicator bulb with a no. 161, 2.66watt and both the turn sig. and neutral indicator bulbs with no. 158, 3.36 watt. The 158 is twice as bright as the 161. You can check out the bulb specs at http://www.sunraylighting.com/pdf/Catalog.pdf

Howdy,

The Speedo light is fine. It is one half (right side) of the tach, the nuetral and high beam indicators that are out. Everything else, oil, signals, etc,... work fine.

FYI, this is not my GS, it is a friends.
