Title: Steering sticky????

Well my brakes stopped rubing but now when I turn the wheel it seems really stiff and sticks for a second.  Any idea of what it could be?

Head stock bearings either too tight or worse, worn out.  This is a must check issue.

I just changed the fork oil so I had the front end disassembled and then put it back together but I never touched the head stock bolt.  It was fine on Friday but my brakes were rubbing so I loosened the front wheel and pushed down on my forks a few times up against the wall.  I did clean my bike pretty good with brake cleaner.  Is it possible that I got some in the bearing?  Yeah I'll loosen it and torque it back down.  Could you tell me what the torque is because I'm at work and the Clymer is at home.

If you used brake cleaner around the steering head you might have washed the grease out of the bearings.

Anybody ever take off the bottom steering stem bearing without special service tool?  I took it apart yesterday and the top bearing was pretty dry but the bottom bearing was a big rusty mess.  I'm going to call the dealer and see if they could just replace the bottom bearing on the stem and I'll take it from there but if not I'll try to do it myself.  thanks

i have both the upper and lower bearings, i just have to find the time to install them.  I'll make sure to take lots of pics

O.K. I got the bearing off and man was that a Buddha Loves You.  I was going to take it to the shop but the guy didn't want to do it because they were so difficult.  So he was going to charge me 50$ or something.  So I welded two threaded rods on the bearing (minus the rollers) and then drilled holes in a thick metal plate. Put the plate on top of the stem and tighten down nuts onto the threaded rods.  The rod broke twice and I just rewelded it.  Now I have to order the bearing now and then press it on. Thanks for the input everybody.
