Title: changing bars on gs500f
Post by: jakmobile on July 07, 2004, 12:34:21 AM
Anyone change their handle bars yet?  If so what did you use and where did you get them.  Did they change the riding position at all(better/worse)?

Same questions(except riding position) regarding mirrors.

Pics?

I just ordered a new bar (http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Chaparral/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=311%2D0510&gift=False&HSLB=False&mscssid=87FB307929A44F21846D4AA05DCC1EC4) & mirrors (http://www.chaparral-racing.com/Chaparral/product_family.asp?family%5Fid=1273&gift=False&0=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D418%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D%2CStreet%20Mirrors&1=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D408%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D0%2CBikemaster%20Street%20Mirrors&Gift=False&mscssid=06562A549FB94EBBB07C9371626745B9) for my bike last week (need them since I crashed (http://www.meighan.com/bike/)). They haven't arrived yet, should be here soon. When I get them on my bike I'll let you know how I like them and how it changes riding position, etc.    8)

EDIT: I just noticed that your topic was gs500f, sorry mine's not an f, just an 02 gs. Not sure how different it is from the 04 f's, but I think the late models are all pretty similar.

I installed the type 2 suburban bars on my GS500F after bending the stock ones in a spill. Personally, I think they fit the bike WAAAAYYYY better than the originals. Normally I don't like very low bars, but these are still high enough that you're not hunched over. Actually make the bike slightly more comfortable. Also, they both look and are quality made; i.e. welded stainless steel. They make the stock bars look chintzy. Thats my input on this topic.

Did you guys have any problems removing the grips or brake fluid container, etc.???
I'm thinking about getting the type 2 bar, but a little concerned about cutting into or breaking something on new GS500F!!!

Pics! Pics!

The SM type 2 bars totally kick arse, you're right. I've had them on my 02 for a few months now and absolutely love them! Not only do they clean up the look of the bike's front end dramatically, they provide much more "up close and personal" feedback with what the front end is doing.

I'm seeing a fair amount of SV650 stuff tacked onto GS500s -- are there a lot of drop-in replacements, or do these mods require a bit of sweat to work?

Sheesh!...

SM Type II's, bar end mirrors.  Should work the same on the 500F:

I really like that. That looks very good, especially with the bar end mirrors.
