Title: Riding in Hawaii
Post by: jakmobile on July 09, 2004, 08:16:09 PM
Any board members from the Big HI?  I'm thinking about moving there next fall and was wondering what the riding scene is like there.

Actually I heard the cost of living there isn't super expensive(honestly nothing really is compared to Northern VA) and my buddy and his gf are moving there in a couple of months.  I was thinking about opening a moped rental shop and being a beach bum the rest of the time.  Property values here have gone up so much in such a short period of time that I could sell my current house and move there and make a huge downpayment:-)

Big HI as in Big Island a.k.a. Island of Hawaii?  I am in Honolulu (Island of Oahu) and there are lots of bikes here.  You can pretty much ride all year round.  Rains a little in winter (around December).

However, it depends on where you are on Oahu.  For example, in Manoa Valley, it rains 300 days a year, where as in Waikiki, it is much more moderate.  Typically, if you are on the windward side (northern side in general) near a mountain, you will get more rain as the wind pushes the moisture up and it condenses becoming clouds yadda yadda yadda.

Same for Big Island.  There are many micro-weather patterns there: desert, rain forest, ice caps.  You really get almost all the worlds's weather patterns on the island.

It is really nice to ride here weather wise.

Cheers,
e.

P.S. For all you folks not familiar with Hawaii:  The State of Hawaii is made up of several islands--Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Big Island, etc.  Honolulu is in Oahu, which is also the most populous island (about 1 million people).  Big Island is the biggest and newest island (volcano is still active there).  Big Island is also called the Island of Hawaii, not to be confused with the State of Hawaii.  That's why people use the name Big Island instead of Hawaii.

I lived there for 4 years and yes, the riding IS great.

I also have some bad news for you...  There are already plenty of moped rental places everywhere that people stay (Honolulu, Kona).  Maybe, just maybe you could find a niche somewhere in Maui.

Hope you speak Japanese...

My dad and I were thinking about moving there and opening a kite shop a few years ago. From what I understand there arent very many kite shopes there.
