Post by: Eightmarky on July 10, 2004, 09:59:34 AM
Does anyone have a tip to make this as simple as possible?  Thanks.

when I did mine, I pulled off the weighted bar ends, used a razor to cut the old ones off, then used hairspray(liberally) on the inside of the new grip and on the handlebar surface. (read that tip somewhere on this site, or maybe pablo's)
It worked great... the hairspray acts like an adhesive when it dries, so your new grips won't slip around. I waited a few hours before riding with the new grips.. others have said to wait 24 hours..

if you don't want to ruin your old grips, you can break the glue up under them using a screw driver.  that's what i did anyway.  slide the screw driver all around, and use it to help slip them off.  also, if you have access to it, compressed air can help lift the grips off the bars, facilitating easy removal.  also, i used grip-glue myself, worked well.

Old Bike Shop Trick:
You can do the whole thing dry IF you have a compressor.
If you use the Air spray nozzle, and shove it under the grip, you can just pump air in there, and the grip comes right off, same procedure for putting a new one on.

That's IF you have a compressor. If not, ignore this post and yell at me later.

my old ones just slid off with little effort once the wights were off the ends....i use spray paint to stick the new ones on the bars...spray it on the bars and ram the grips on

When I installed heated grip pads earlier this season I had to remove the stock grips and put them back on again. I found you can use a phillips screwdriver to break the glue initially, but after that you can squirt a little soapy water in there with a turkey baster, and the grips should come off with a little bit of twisting. Same trick works when putting the grips back on again. The soapy water will provide enough lube to get the grip on, and when it dries the grip will stay pretty steady. No grip glue necessary!

If you don't plan on keeping the old grips I'd say it'd be much easier to just go at them with a razor blade.

I had to do this spur-of-the-moment while replacing the handlebars in a hardware store parking lot and it was starting to rain. One grip came off and the other one just wouldn't budge period. It was getting dark. Eventually I spit in the space between the grip and the bar, and after working it around it came right off. Presto!

remove.... i use a screwdriver and a can of carb cleaner...get the screwdriver in then spray carb cleaner up along the shaft and it wil melt the glue and the screwdriver wil rotate around the bar and the grip will slide right off

install
I've had good luck with carb cleaner sprayed into the grip...it kinda melts the underside of the grip and as it dries the grip kinda glues itself to the bar

the best carb cleaner.....the cheapest crap with a little black cap from O'reileys

Definently clean the inside of the grip before installing. I prefer to use weather stripping adhesive (contact cement) instead of hairspray...for the grips. Not that I even have hairspray to use.

To save ur fingers, knuckles, patients and time do as CasiUSA did. That is by far the easiest and most affective way of removing an old stubborn grip. Yeaaa that is if u have an air compressor. Well if you dont go buy one, you will eventually use it anyways. Just shove the blower nozzle under the open end of the grip and it will push it right off the bar. 60+ psi should do it. Installing the new ones is easy. Use hairspray if you want, i usually put a line of grip glue down the bar and a bit inside the grip. The grip glue will allow the grip to slide on easily. Twist is around as u put it on. Wait a few hours or overnight and you will be good to go. Nothing beats grip glue speaking from experience ... a bad one. I put new grips on the morning before a motocross race, didnt use grip glue.... Midway through a moto, leaned the bike over to go through a turn and my grip slide off of my handlebar. I was laying on the ground with my bike on top of me and an empty squishy grip in my hand . Used grip glue ever since  :thumb:
