Title: Bad frame welding
Post by: dgyver on July 12, 2004, 05:49:26 AM
I was prepping my 94 frame for painting when I noticed this weld, or shall I say lack of. There is a section that is missing about 3" of weld except for the little 1/4" spot. The front half is welded. I can easily fix this but I am surprised this made it though the QC checks.

Very very funny coinkidink... I was in the dealers saturday, looking over the 97 GS they have... Its very very pretty looking all polished up and pretty, and the steering neck to top frame rails... right on the top where the rider can obviously see it... is welded up so sloppily that I can see pin hole sized holes in the welds... where you could stick a pin... and it stay there. I showed it to the salesman... who says oh yea its all good. Then I tell the service manager.... who tells the store owner who tells me he'll tell the bike's owner... they have it on consignment...
Cool.
Srinath.

All of the welding in this photo looks bad. Does this vary from year to year? Are the frames sourced to different places? Now I want to go recheck the welds on my 01.

The other welds you see are just sloppy but functional. The left brace was not jigged correctly so the weld is only on the frame and not both. The outside of the left brace is welded correctly. The right side brace is fine and is actually a good looking weld.

BTW...this is the inside of the left side of the frame. Just to the left where the valve cover is.
