Title: Cylinder head bolts...
Post by: The Buddha on July 13, 2004, 01:30:43 PM
Hey on my eli the cylinder heads were bolted in with bolts that ran through the cylinder blocks and into the upper cases. Now the GS has studs that you take the nut off the top and the studs sit there... making you hvae to take the head off straight up over the top of them... Cant we replace them with the right length and thread bolts so when we take the bolts off. the head lifts up 1/2 inch or so and comes out the side....
Cool.

Interesting Srinath. Guess you could do it. Kinda like the opposite where everybody wants to use studs instead of bolts. I know in the auto industry the main reason we use bolts vs studs in engine assembly is because it's cheaper...just need one bolt instead of a stud and a nut, and just one step of putting the bolt in vs putting the stud in then putting the nut on. Hey guy didja know I love the GS500 and this forum?

Why? There is not a problem removing it from the top.

Every time you loosen and tighten the head bolts, you would be exposing the case to additional wear. This may eventually damage the threads in the case. Much easier to replace the damaged studs than damaged cases.

Also, having studs help keep every thing in alignment as it put back together.

Yea that alignment thing did strike me too... but they have locator dowels for that dont they. If the studs were bolts the head and cylinders will slide off backwards and out and you can do the top wihtout taking the motor out... like my eli. I was surprissed how easy it was on it. And its water cooled too.
Cool.

Yeah, there are indexing pins that aligns everything but they only stick out about 3/8" (3/4" overall length).

The GS motor does not need to be removed to pull the head or cylinders. I had to do this at the track. Took a little over 1 hour to tear it down to replace the base gasket and have it running again.

How did you take the head and cylinders off with motor still in... I thought it was not possible.
Cool.

There is just enough room to lift the head over the studs & between the frame. Lift the back end of the head and remove it at a slight angle. Make sure all the wires & cables are out of the way. It is a tight fit but can be done.
