Title: Newb Here , 89 GS500
Post by: BustemUpBob on July 15, 2004, 08:27:19 PM
Hello All GS Owners,
I have attached a picture of my 1989 GS500. I have had this bike for about a month. So far Mods Include,
V&H Exhaust
K&N Air Filter
Progressive Front Springs
SV650 Rear Spring On its way, this should make a great improvement from the shot stock one.
I bought this bike off of no other then E-Bay, $1,000 delivered. But the tank was shot (Leaking) so I had to but another and I did all the work myself, What Do you think?
Future Mods
I want to buy a Titan II kit. Paint The Frame Black & The Fairings A Metallic Copper.
Well enough rambling, just thought I would say hello!!!

Hey my 89 once looked exactly like that. You'll like the clip-ons that were only available on our year bikes. And yes a new rear shock will definitely help.

oh yeah...welcome to the forum blah blah blah

Still looks like new after all these years. I like the colorscheme, I want my bike having the same. (It's purple now   ).

And yes, in Europe they were delivered with the clipons until the year 2000.

Well like I said in my first post I was looking at a new color, the only reason is because of the tank. It does not match perfectly. But we shall see I still have the original tank W/ Decals, But She leaks. I will let ya'll know what color I finally go with.

Yea I bought it off a guy ,who had bought it for his women. And she never got into riding. He never even registered the darn thing. He said he rode it now and then ( GSXR Owner ),but never put many miles on it.

Okay, I'm new here too.  I've had my 90 GS for 2 weeks.  Only thing I've done is have the fork seales changed.

I have a lot to learn so the first question is:

What are clipons?

Second:

Are progressive springs difficult to install?

Finally, and y'all will probably think this is a dumb question, where can I find saddlebags, hard or soft, for the GS?

ThanX.  This site is great.

Clip-Ons are a Style Of Handle Bar, look at my picture on the top of this page, unless you have a UK bike you have one solid bar. Mine are 2 Separate bars.

See the Progressive fork spring install-the lazy way page on pantablo's website.

There are LOTS of good saddlebags out there.  My soft luggage experience is with a Tour Master Cortech set, with a tail bag that clips right into the saddlebags, or which you can strap on by itself with the hide-away bungee cords.

If you don't feel the need for the tough Cortech construction, consider the Tour Master SB-34 Saddlebags and either their Deluxe Tail Bag or the smaller TB-17 Tail Bag.

Other folks will probably stop by with other recommendations.  If you can't wait, use the "Search" link above to find message threads that contain the word "saddlebags".

PS - Do you already have a tank bag?  If not, I would suggest making THAT your first purchase.  I recommend the Tour Master 12-liter Magnetic Tank Bag

DISCLAIMER:  Please shop around at other vendors before you buy anything.  I haven't done a wide-spread comparison of these prices, so you may find some things cheaper at MAW or elsewhere.
