My GS should take five gallons the fill up. Thats what my owners manaul says, but even after riding on the reserve for thirty miles three gallons is the most it will take. does any one know any thing about this? :dunno:
Also some times it will not go in to first gear from neutral at a stop. Have any of you had this problem?
One more thing, is there any difference between the '02 and '04 besides the fairing?
Yup yup yup.
Point 1:
Try sitting on the bike while you're filling up, only when the bike is fully upright can you maximize filling capacity.
Point 2:
Nope. But I have had probs getting it into first from neutral. I just ease off the clutch a little while shifting. Then it engages without a prob.
Point 3:
Oil cooler on the '04.

Point one -
You probaly only get 3 gallons because you are filling the bike on the side stand. The adise to hhave the bike upright is absolutley correct.
Howver, rather than sitting on the bike - it makes grabbing the pump, pushing the buttons on the pump, replacing the nozzle, checking the oil and going inside to pay a pain - why not just put the bike on the center stand. You completely omit the chance of getting a splash of gas on the private parts as well when you use the stand.
on point 2 - every bike I ever owned gave me trouble - sometimes - with shifting either into or out of neutral while standing still - the advise to let the clutch out a bit & pull it in again while trying is right on.
I figure trying to yank HARD to get the bike on the C stand while probably standing on greasy concrete with only one foot on the ground at the gas station might cause you to drop it. I pay with my card at the pump, so thats not a prob for me. As for oil, etc. usually after fill up on a long trip I need to get off and stretch anyways. Ah well, to each his own.
Don't sit on the bike. You will feel silly the first time you over fill. Even on the side stand I get in a lot more than 3 gallons. From side stand to straight up the difference is a small amount, certinly not gallons. How many mile do you go before you have to put it on reserve?
Tank you all for the advice. I'll try out all of your ideas.
mp183, you asked about how many miles can I ride on primary: about 150 miles or so.
I got to top my GS out today on IS-10, about 15 miles east of Desert Center.....For thoes of you who don't really know Southern Califronia well, thats in the middle of the desert. Anyways I got her up to 120, not bad for a twin! Hell my focus whont even do that.
ok I know it has been siad before but I think it needs to be reiteraded for all the noobs. you don't fill a bike like a car, you have to hold the nozzle almost all the way out of the tank and watch it fill up. when the gas starts to run out the top then it is full. if you stick it in all the way like a car and when it clicks off you might be getting 3 gallons.
I fill it to the top of the filler neck, just like just like my owner's manual says to do. I did notice that there is still a good amount of gas in there, maybe an inch or two. I guess the best thing to do would be to run the damn thing dry and the see what happeds..... So who wants to give me a ride????
yeah shure come out here and I'll folow you around with a gas can until your empty.
1) I fill mine on the centerstand.
2) Give the clutch a pump or two before the light turns and you should be able to get it back into gear just fine.
